While the unit performed great on the highway, it was a disaster once I got to new york city! it recalculated the route every 30 seconds and had no idea where i was. returned the unit.

Posted .Thank you for taking the time to write a review about the nüvi 55LM, we’d like to address some issues you have with the device. The saved locations on the device are put in order based on distance; however you can start to type the name at the top of the screen to narrow the search based on each character you type in, most cases you don’t have to type the entire name in to find the result you need.
If the nüvi has trouble re-calculating it’s possible that is needs a software update you can update the software by using our Garmin Express program. Twice it failed to recognize actual addresses. Once it worked properly and found the right location. If it worked half the time it might be worth using, but one out of five is unacceptable.

To address the problems that you mentioned, I recommend first updating the software and mapping of the device. This can be done through the Garmin Express program, which can be downloaded here: www.garmin.com/express

Wasted time driving 45 minutes each way to buy it and get home to find out it does not have it and now have to drive 45 minutes both ways to take it back. Very unhappy!!!

Good, but not Great
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this for my father as the description on Bestbuy.com says it has voice recognition so my father could tell the GPS unit where he'd like to go. Once we got home and set it up (which wasn't difficult) we found out that it in fact does not have voice recognition. It requires manual entry of city, address # and street name. Not great if you are simply wanting to search like Google maps by putting in the name of a store and city. For an older person that doesn't have a smart phone this requires a bit too much prep time and must be done first at home or near a computer unless you know the address of everywhere you want to go.
