I have had many Garmin devices over the years and have always been impressed. The previous 3 worked wonderful. Perhaps the quality control has gone by the wayside or maybe I just got a lemon. This newest model does not have the responsiveness that the older models had. You have to press the screen much harder and multiple times to get some of the functions to perform. A real disappointment!

I walk an hour a day on a treadmill at an elevation of 3 to 5 and a speed of 3.0 to 3.2. I hold onto the treadmill because I have seen a number of people fall off of treadmills breaking arms, bruising knees, etc. This was not a problem for my old garmin vivosmart, but with the vivosmart 4 it counts steps based on arm movement. I wish I would have known this before I purchased it. I really wanted to upgrade, but the new vivosmart was a big disappointment.

Posted .I am sorry to hear about your experience with this watch. This is by design however. All of our watches with a built in accelerator for indoor use require that your arm moves to properly track steps.
Your older vivosmart would have tracked steps the same way. This is covered in our FAQ below.
We do have watches that can also pair with a foot or running dynamics pod if you would rather not move your arm.
