We’ve tried a few brands of doorbells and this one has become our favorite. After seeing how its features work, we agree this really is the smarter, sharper wired Nest Doorbell! For starters, the clear instructional videos in the app make for a super easy installation and the doorbell is compatible with a variety of transformers and chimes. Having a wired connection means no batteries or charging is necessary. The picture quality is quite good with 2K HDR resolution. An expanded 166° diagonal field of view allows one to see plenty of area up to and around one’s front door. Notifications are quite timely and it is quick to connect to view the video image. We are appreciating how much faster this Nest Doorbell connect compared to our previous doorbell of a different brand. Another feature this doorbell does much better than its competitors in recognition of people, packages and other images. With a subscription we can utilize Gemini to search our video history to see a summary based on search criteria and related video clips. The Google Home Premium subscription also allows for more detailed descriptions with longer access to videos over a greater time period. This doorbell’s many features make using it easier and more efficient. The Google Home app works quite well and we appreciate that it is well structured with tabs and a nice user interface. Notifications are quite timely and there are some quick reply options that come in handy, such as leave the package, not available, and others. Some may not like that additional features like familiar faces or extended video access require a premium subscription, but the features are quite handy and work well. The added ability to perform thorough video searches and receive summary information can be a time saver. This Google Nest doorbell is more expensive than other options out there, yet we can attest that its overall quality and performance without issue is worth the additional cost. Interestingly, it comes with a theft replacement guarantee that if someone takes it, Google will replace it.

Thanks for reaching out about your Nest Doorbell (Wired, 3rd gen). We hear your frustration regarding the issues with the chime. There’s a few things check to make sure everything is working properly — here’s what to review:

      1. Check chime settings: If you have a mechanical chime (moving parts that make the sound), the chime duration option should be turned off. This setting is for electronic or digital chimes only.
      2. Check doorbell wires: It's possible that a wire came loose when you put your doorbell on the backplate, or that the wires aren't tight enough. Make sure that the wires are securely connected.
      3. Check chime connector: Check the chime box to ensure the Chime Connector and wires aren't touching any moving parts, which could muffle the sound.

This review is on a Google - Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen). This doorbell looks great with my house colors and has a modern look. It isn't small like a normal doorbell so it will stick out to visitors easily. The button to press is also easily identified from the camera. Installation was about 30 minutes. When you scan the code on the back of the doorbell, it will lead you to instructions to install it. It didn't lead me straight to the instructions though. The instructions say that you need to have a transformer that is strong enough to run the camera. I was in luck and mine was strong enough. You can go ahead and install it. When you power it on, it will show you a blue light, which means you are good or will flash yellow, which means you don't have a strong enough transformer. There is a little puck to install on your chime that will enable it to make its sound. The puck was easy to install. I had to drill new holes to mount the doorbell as it is larger than a standard doorbell but that wasn't hard. They provide some extension mounts that will give you some wiggle room behind it for the wires. I was unable to push the wires back into the frame so this helped hide them. The wires to the doorbell didn't matter which terminals to connect it to, so that made it easier to install. Once power was restored, I scanned the code again. Under Google Home, I added a new device(make sure Bluetooth is on). My Wi-fi SSID is hidden but it let me add other, so I was able to keep it hidden. There was an update to perform which took a few minutes. Then it asks a couple of questions to get it setup, including testing the chime. Then you select which plan you want to use and a few more questions. That's it. Pretty easy. The picture is a little awkward because it has a curve to it but that allows it show very far to the left, right, up and down. So if someone tried to stand out of its view next to your house, they couldn't. Picture quality looks great. You can zoom in if you want but that degrades the picture quality some. What I am impressed with is the speaker on this doorbell. I can talk through it and listen to the visitor crystal clear. They can hear you crystal clear too. You can even play three preconfigured messages like "We'll be right there", "You can leave it", and "No one can come to the door". I have mine connected to Alexa and can ask Alexa to show the doorbell on my TV. It will alert me on my phone when someone is at the door. You can ask Gemini to search your recordings for specific events like who delivered flowers. You can also set up areas which you don't want the camera to pick up movement. This is a great doorbell that I would recommend.

Solid Upgrade, but Not a Must-Have for Everyone

I recently upgraded from the 2nd generation Nest Doorbell to the new 3rd generation wired model. The installation was extremely easy since Google kept the same overall size and shape for the new device. It was basically a plug-and-play swap that took just a few minutes to complete. The most noticeable change is the wider fisheye-style lens and the higher resolution 2K camera. It gives a much broader view of the front porch area, but it also takes some getting used to. In my case, the wider angle does not necessarily improve the experience since the previous 4:3 ratio lens already covered the important areas of my porch. That said, the new camera captures much more fine detail. During my first day using it, it even picked up a person walking by on the sidewalk between my gutter downspout and the wall, something the old one never noticed. With motion notifications turned on, it can get a little overwhelming because the camera detects almost everything. I’ll need to fine-tune the motion zones again like I did with the last model. Unfortunately, most of my previous settings didn’t carry over in the upgrade, but given the different field of view, I would have needed to adjust them anyway. The added Gemini functionality brings some cool new features. You can search recordings with your voice and get smarter notifications that recognize people and objects. For example, it might say “Steve is at the front door with a package,” if it recognizes your neighbor and what he’s holding. It’s not a game changer, but it does add some nice convenience and a little fun to daily use. The higher resolution and improved night vision are both noticeable upgrades. Low light clarity is much better than before, and I can make out faces more easily after dark. Video streaming and playback are smooth and clear even when zooming in on smaller details. Overall, I like the new Nest Doorbell and think it performs very well. If you are coming from an older or non-Nest device, it’s an easy recommendation. However, if you already have the 2nd generation model, it’s more of a coin toss. The improvements are solid but not necessarily essential unless you really want the enhanced camera and Gemini features.

A great doorbell, and a security necessity

I have had video doorbells now for maybe 8+ years, before they were common. I am upgrading from a Gen 1, Nest doorbell, which is pre-google. So while installation was pretty "easy", it is the reason for half a star deduction. I remove my old Nest, and what was nice, is that the mounting holes, lines up perfectly. So no new holes to drill. The simple wire clip, was so easy to use... just trimmed my old solid wire a bit, and we were up and running. I did NOT have to upgrade my chime sensor, as the old one was in place and still working just fine. I added the 20degree block, so that it gives a better view of my doorway and part of my driveway. My half star deduction, has to do with the locking/mounting screw. Even for small hands it is in a tight spot, and you have to get the doorbell PERFECTLY on the bracket, and slide it up.. just a "tick". That wasn't in the video, or text in the app about installation. That little bit of movement to lock the camera on the bracket, is important, for the screw to thread properly. I would recommend testing it out, BEFORE hooking up the wires, and mounting the bracket. Integration into the Google Home app, was pretty straight forward... We already had the app, due to other products, and an account, so we did not have to set anything up. It did the wifi setup and software pieces, in under 5 minutes. We had to tweak some of the notification settings, and we off and running. However, this is where my other .5 start deduction is. I understand why Google is sunsetting the legacy Nest app... however, I just don't like Google home interface. It is too busy, and doesn't get me RIGHT to my doorbell when I open it, because it shows me all my other devices. It's a nit-pick, but as a mobile software developer, I would really would have liked to see maybe a dedicated app JUST for the doorbell, and/or cameras. The picture and audio quality is fantastic on the doorbell.. .so glad that we have updated. A much clearer view then my Gen 1... and the audio is a LOT better. So honestly, if you don't have a video doorbell... get one. They are sooo important nowadays. This one is a great one to get. My minor nitpicks, are because I am a legacy user, and have some big hands/fingers, that just provided some minor challenges on the install.

This google nest doorbell is as powerful as it is simplistic. It is easy to use, reliable, and attractive. Pros: Ease of use/ functionality - This doorbell is has simplistic hardware thAt is easy to install, especially with the step by step instructions while using the app. I already had a few google home devices so it blended seemlessly with the ecosystem. A push of the button outside sends an immediate chime to the physical bell inside (my old ring doorbell had a delay) and a voice alert on my google home speaker. The software also accurately identifies people and packages as well as when packages are picked up. The video and audio quality is great and very quick. The fov of the camera combined with the angled mounting bracket made it useful even in my very tight entryway. I also really enjoy the look of the doorbell overall. CONS - The only negative thing I can think of for this doorbell is possibly the price. I think it is worth the money but it is at the higher end and I'm sure there are products that offer a better value for the price Overall I think this is a great product and I recommend it.

I have had the Gen 1 Nest doorbell and it has worked pretty flawlessly in regards to being a front door camera and door bell. With this gen, the build seems nice and the plastic that was on the first gens have been removed in this model. Installing this doorbell, I could see how my old one aged, and it did not age well. My doorbell is not exposed to rain or direct sunlight, but the heat really did a number and dried the plastic. For this gen of a build, I can see minimal plastic so that is a good thing. I did buy a silicone cover that is made for the gen 2 models and it fit fine. I would avoid any covers for these door bells that cover the top portion of the camera like a baseball hat, because I have heard that it hinders the night vision. The package of this new doorbell is nice and minimal. It is packed neatly and has everything you need to install besides the tools of course. For me I needed to drill new holes to accomodate the new bracket, which is a little longer than the Nest doorbell. The first step is to hook up the new chime and replace the old one for me. That was super easy and the only thing that took a bit of time was the physical replacement of the new doorbell. Why because new holes needed to be drilled and I needed to add the spacers in the back because of the wall shingles that would obstruct the security wrench. I also used the pivot plate as well, this angles the camera out, if I did not use it, it would just show most of the side of the porch and house which I did not want. After the install and wiring, which was super easy by the way. You do not need any wire strippers of sorts unless you need to strip or expose more wire to insert into the new wire adapters that this supplies you. I powered it up and connected with the google home app. Was it like pairing a bluetooth headset? Not really, more like adding a smart appliance like lights and google speakers. It wasn't hard, just scan and place in the room you want on the app and you are good to go. I mistakenly did not remove my old camera from the app prior to powering up and installing this new one. So in my devices section, it's just laying dormant there. There was not way I could figure out how to remove it. Maybe it removes itself after some time at idle? Not sure, but otherwise a quick install. The 2k video is brighter than my first gen Nest. It is a bit better however, for me the night vision is spotty. The night vision is great nearby but I can no longer see past 3 to 5 feet of the doorbell. Which is not a deal breaker, but you cannot see a person at night until they are pretty close to the camera. But other than that, the camera has been great and overall, super easy to replace and easy to operate. I am using a Pixel 9.

    Big Upgrade Over Prior Gen!

This is a nice upgrade from the last generation of the same model doorbell. Along with the new AI features, the camera's field of vision is significantly increased to nearly 180 degrees horizontally and vertically. It's probably more like 175 degrees, but the picture is only missing about the last 6" of the doormat directly below it. It accomplishes this without the usual "fish eye" distortion. This allows for maximum coverage while retaining the high def picture to allow for zooming in. If you're upgrading from the recent model, installation took no time. Simply turn off the power to the device, take it off the mount, loosen 2 screws, attach the cables to the new doorbell, tighten 2 screws and attach the new doorbell to the existing mount (they are identical). The package includes new mounts and all hardware needed to do the job from scratch. Having done it before, the process from scratch is also relatively straightforward. Overall, this is the first real upgrade that I feel Google has done since my original Nest Cam. When they released the first version of this new style, it was a downgrade in every way. The next gen fixed some of the problems by having a wired version. This new one is finally the doorbell camera I've been waiting for. Facial recognition, package alerts, intelligent alerts that don't just say "motion" but actually describe what was seen. For example "someone walking a dog". It also does the daily recap of what was seen on the camera. While it's not perfect, it's kind of funny to read. I highly recommend this doorbell, even if you have the last generation. It's worth the upgrade.
