Nest Hello - Late to the party, solid performer

I've had the doorbell for about 3 days now, and here are my first impressions. My experience with other smart doorbells includes the Ring Pro. Pros: The 4:3 aspect ratio is perfect for this application (16:9 should really just stick with security cameras). The nighttime infrared is pretty clear, much better than I've seen from the Ring. It uses your existing chime (no annoying chime like Ring). The microphone is clear. It has facial recognition, and allows you to add "known people". It integrates with your other Google products (ex. Google Home can announce when a familiar face is at the door). Cons: I'm not sure if it's mine or the Hello's problem, but if someone rings the door repeatedly, say 2 rings within 5 seconds, only one chime plays within the house (I have a mechanical chime 16V 10VA transformer). I'm going to have to recheck the installation to be sure it's not my end. The $5 subscription fee to have Nest store your recordings. I really wish they would offer 1-3 days free, and if you wanted it stored longer have different pricing tiers (Free, $3, or $5). Side note: The speaker on the doorbell is loud and there's no option to adjust it. Also, in order to create zones for motion detection, you'll need to use your computer to do so. Final Thoughts: So far, I'm pretty happy with the doorbell. Aesthetically, in my opinion, the Nest knocks it out of the park. The picture and sound are clear, and I don't have the annoying chime tone. I haven't had any stability issues (though my home network is not your standard single modem/router and I'm currently on fiber - 1 Gb/s). Installation was as easy as any of the other smart doorbells.

Good video but uses A LOT of data...

We bought one of these at work to give as a gift to someone who recently had a spouse die. Since they were now living alone, we thought this would help add to their home security options and help them feel more secure. I'm familiar with the RING doorbells but we chose Nest as it was a little smaller, more attractive, and per reviews had better video. There is one glaring problem with this device, however... RING, for example, sends you an alert when it senses motion (if you have that feature turned on), or if someone presses the doorbell on it. That's it. The rest of the time it's in standby mode. NEST however, stays on 24/7 recording video, much in a similar way that a wired home security camera would. Yes, by doing this, it allows you to catch perhaps a few things on video that others like RING won't, but it's constantly uploading video via your WiFi to the cloud (if you subscribe to storage) and uses A LOT of data. As in, several hundred gigabytes per months worth of data. And there is NO way to turn this off and just have it record video for actual motion or doorbells - you have no choice - it's 24/7 recording or nothing but standard live alerts. Most home internet services (like the person we bought this for) have data limits per month (theirs is 800 gigs). The problem is, this person has "cut the cord" on cable and streams all of their TV content too, as many people are starting to do. Plus a few other devices (laptop, etc) use data as well. This doorbell would tip their data use over their limit, causing overage charges. Doorbell+streaming+others+cloud storage fees makes this a VERY expensive device to use over time. Devices that store 24/7 video should be made to connect to a DVR Type device (like wired security cameras). Residential WiFi simply is not designed for 24/7 video uploading in most cases. It's a nice looking device, and does do nice video. But the lack of options in settings and forcing you to use 24/7 recording make it very impractical so we returned it and got them a RING instead.

    Fantastic video doorbell

Great doorbell! Liked it so much bought a 2nd one. Picture and video quality is excellent. Had to get a new transformer after purchasing second doorbell. Transformer we upgraded to was Zenith 16V 24 VA, otherwise would not connect to our Wi-Fi. Excellent customer service! I believe you cannot go wrong when purchasing this product. We have had our doorbell for about month and just purchased our second one a few days ago.

I wanted a ring doorbell but I already have the nest smart lock, so I wanted to be compatible. So far there are no complaints. Easy install (all the necessary tools are included for drilling, except the drill of course) and fast app set up. I'm very satisfied! However, I'm anticipating drawbacks as soon as the trial for Nest Aware expires. I'm interested in seeing how the quality changes afterwards.

Absolutely fantastic doorbell camera. Super easy to set up. Never once had an issue dropping from WiFi. Great video quality. Gives me peace of mind to be able to screen people at the door, as well as keep an eye on the house when I’m not at home.

Best doorbell wired (worst product ever)

Brought this a year ago and it’s already broken I called customer service and sat on the phone for a hour and a half just to be told “the only other thing I can tell you is to buy a new one” I recommend everyone to save their money and not buy the sorry excuse of a companies product. Go with something better and more reliable don’t waste your time with this. Also when the doorbell captures something it’s very late by the time you get the alert the person or thing won’t even be there anymore

    Don’t buy Google products

This is the worst doorbell. It doesn’t ring, the hardwired version, or rather it just stops. No one at Google nest or Best Buy will provide support for $190 doorbell. It’s also part of the entire Google home eco system. Buy a different system. Purchased Google WiFi mesh, best thermostat, 4 outdoor cameras, and the bell. Still no support, it’s the customer’s fault.

    Nice Doorbell

This thing is cool! Overall I like it except for two things which bring it down two stars. First, had I read all the specs before buying, I probably would've bought the Ring Pro instead. This doorbell is only rated down to 14degF. Here in the midwest, temps easily drop below 14 overnight throughout the winter. With that being the case, I have a feeling this thing is not going to last much more than 1 or 2 winters. I've read the Ring Pro is rated down to -5F. The physical installation was easy but I had issues with wifi setup. Even though the app recognized both my 2.4g and 5g networks, it could not connect. I tried each one at least 5 times and made my password visible to ensure no typos. My router is less than 20ft away and there is a large window close by so the signal is strong. I finally tried manually typing in my network name and that did the trick! Netgear 5g wireless AC router + Google Fiber + highest quality camera setting = no disconnect issues! The camera is very clear and seems to work well. I just wish it could handle lower temps better.

    It’s okay when it works

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I don’t feel that my expectations for this doorbell we’re unreasonable. First of all, I wanted a doorbell that functions 100% of the time. That is not what I got with this product. The live feed works fine until about 6 pm when the video display on the app shows a rotating circle over a snapshot of my porch, like the feed is endlessy “loading” (and not displaying live feed). I tried to connect with Nest support through the app, but there are 20 other customers in line ahead of me. I simply don’t have time to sit here and stare at my phone for an hour, so I don’t miss my chance to chat with a representative. Also, I didn’t realize that I have to pay for a monthly subscription to view snapshots of motion/people detected at my door. So unless you happen to be viewing the live feed at the exact moment someone is at your door, you won’t get to view what exactly the doorbell detected. I get notifications for activity, but the snapshot image shows my empty porch instead of the person it detected. If you pay the monthly fee you will get to see he recorded video footage. But having the doorbell constantly recording means it is using a substantial amount of internet bandwidth (120 GB/month for medium image quality). So I will need to upgrade my internet package to the highest speed just to accomadate the doorbell, plus the price for Nest’s monthly subscription. That seeems a little unreasonable after spending over $200 on the doorbell. The image quality is pretty good during the day, night vision could be better. Overall, I don’t think this product is worth the price if I have to keep dumping money into it every month and it doesn’t even work 100% of the time.

    • Brand response from Nest Support
      Posted .

We're sorry to hear about these issues you've experienced with the Nest Hello. If you're experiencing issues with the Nest Hello feed constantly loading after 6pm, this could indicate some type of wireless interference since it's happening at a specific time of day.

This could be caused by other wireless devices being used at this point in the day, or could even be from a neighbors WiFi connection being on the same channel causing interference. We'd suggest checking for wireless devices that are between the router and Nest Hello that might be enabled after 6, and restarting the router could help switch to a different channel.

As for data usage, you can find full details on expected bandwidth usage here: https://nest.com/support/article/How-much-bandwidth-will-Nest-Cam-use Nest

I’ve only had the Nest Hello for a week now but so far I love it. Easy to install yourself. The camera picture is great. The notifications to my phone seem a bit delayed but I use it more for security than communicating with guests so it works for me.

    Failure Don't Purchase

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Failed after 2.5 years. When door bell rings camera shuts off because wired doorbell has battery that keeps camera on when power needed for doorbell chime. By turning indoor chime off, camera stays on when door bell activated but no chime is heard in house and app notifications (push and email) fail also. Poorly engineered.

After reading reviews and doing a bit of research I went with Hello Nest. The options over the others I looked at , Nest had what I wanted. Monthly fee isn't bad as all security cameras have some type of fee for storage. Doing the $50.00 per year until I add a couple additional cameras , wanted to see how this worked before I got the extras. set up was very easy and within minutes it was up and going on the 30 day trial for storage. Will do an update when cameras are put in or if this takes a turn for the worse.
