Full Disclosure: I was given a Honeywell - Smart Color Thermostat with Wi-Fi Connectivity in exchange for an honest and timely review. I have a mix of older wall thermostats and newer connected thermostats from Honeywell and others in my home and vacation home. I was eager to upgrade one of my older thermostats and try this new model from Honeywell. The Quickstart guide carefully explains the connections required to run the thermostat. Notably this WiFi thermostat requires 24 volts AC on a so-called "C" wire. My home thermostats all have only three wire, so I needed to use "plan C" in the Honeywell instructions. That involves a 24 V AC power supply. I happened to have one in my pile of parts and wires in my basement, so I was accidentally prepared! One of the videos made it very clear that the wires needed to run directly to the furnace and not a zone controller. I'm not sure why. My home has all zone controllers, so I decided to install the Thermostat in my workshop across the driveway from my house to control a hot air heater I have out there . I've wanted to be able to turn on the heat remotely for some time now and had not yet got around to setting that up. So off I went. The first step is to turn off the power to the heater/furnace. Next is mounting the new base plate and connecting the thermostat wires and power supply wires (in my case) to the terminals on the baseplate. Honeywell wisely tells us to take a photo of the original wiring BEFORE starting to take things apart...just in case. Then we label the wires themselves and remove them from the old thermostat baseplate. All of this was easy and there are very helpful videos available on the Honeywell web site. Next I snapped the new thermostat on new baseplate and plugged in the 24 V adapter. The thermostat powered up quickly and prompted me to connect to WiFi and register the device. I already had an account on MyTotalConnect, so I just logged in using a web browser, created a new location and added this new thermostat. I was able to name it appropriately so it will be easy to identify in the event I end up with several of these at this home. I was also able to set up settings for various notifications I can receive based on various conditions that might require my attention like high or low temperature or a loss of connectivity. I already had the app on my iPhone so I didn't need to download it. I did have to close the app and restart it to gain visibility to my new location and thermostat. Since I have used the app for over a year controlling thermostats at my vacation home, the ability to just add a location was excellent. I can control both homes from the same app very easily. You have the option of controlling the thermostats from a web browser as well. The GUI is quite similar so it is also very easy. You can easily set up a weekly Wake/Leave/Return/Sleep schedules with separate temperature settings for heating or cooling, which makes changing from winter to summer or vice versa, really easy. The thermostat also displays the current weather in your area and a 5 day forecast. I like the way Honeywell designs their thermostats. I don't need or want a lot of learning or prediction of our occupancy schedule. I just want to set it myself and be able to monitor and control it from anywhere on earth where I have connectivity.

    Poorly designed lockout mode

This could have been a good thermostat except they did one major stupid thing. It has a full lock or partial lock. Full lock locks it all. Partial lock allows you to set the temperature only. You can not change mode to heat off or ac. You can not adjust the fan. If you unlock it, then the person is able to change everything. Change furnace type, delete it from WiFi, etc. They need to have a lock out for settings mode.

If you have been holding off buying a wi-fi thermostat because you weren't sure about the technology, you can probably stop waiting. Honeywell's second generation Wi-fi Smart Color Thermost probably has every feature you could want and doesn't take a rocket scientist to install. IF, and this is a big if for some folks, you already have that C Wire that everyone is talking about. That's essential to provide power to the device. And the sad fact is a lot of homes do not have one. There are workarounds but a lot of people are not going to want to buy something that is not plug and play. So just be aware: If you have a C wire, you are good to go. If not, probably not. This is true of most thermostats of this genre so its no knock on Honeywell. With that out of the way, it is hard to say much bad about this device, except for maybe its a little smaller than I would like. My previous thermostat was bigger. But this is big enough and because the backlit screen (you can choose any color you want) it is very easy to see the touch screen display. The display screen is thoughtfully organized with current outdoor temp on the left (once you establish a connection with your home wi-fi network, which provides that information), the actual indoor temp in larger font in the middle and the set temperature on the right. Current humidity, inside and out, are also displayed which is a nice touch. If you have all the proper wires, installation is a snap. Look at your current connections, label all the wires, remove old thermostat. Then just make sure you connect the new thermostat the same way. Anybody can do it. No serious handyman skills required. Just be sure to follow step by step instructions. Once up and running, this new Honeywell Thermostat does just about everything you could want. You can control it with your voice using Amazon's Alexa or Googe Assistant. You can control it remotely using an app. You can opt to program it to change temps during certain hours of the day and certain days of the week. There is also a "vacation" setting that allows you to set the temp for a period when you are gone and then automatically return to the normal schedule on the day you plan to arrive home Unlike some models, it will automatically switch back and forth between heating and cooling (with some exceptions) . And there's a setting I have never seen before called "Circulate" which randomly runs the fan 35 percent of the time. For those days, perhaps, when its nice outside and you have the windws open. As for the whole wi-fi thing, that's not required for the thermostat to work but it does provide extra information (current weather) and gives you the ability to control the thermostat no matter where you are in the world -- via the app. Registration with Honeywell required. All and all, its a pretty nice setup and should work well for most homes. Just make sure you have that C wire.

There must be a bad batch of these out there from other recent reviews I've seen. I got the Faulty Sensor messages that then tell you to get a replacement. Tried a second tstat and it was the same thing so moved to an Ecobee and no longer have issues. Has potential if they can get the faulty sensors fixed.

This is the 4th Honeywell product I have owned but the worst. Came home last Sunday to a 85 degree house on a 72 setting. Had to throw fuse to get it to stop running. No response. Reset and ran for 6 days before same problem. Now broke the next day. BB to replace but not sure I want it replaced. I think this series of HW thermostats have major problems. May have to go back to old manual thermostat here that worked for 10 years with no problem. Disappointed in HW.

I had a Honeywell thermostat and decided to give this one a try instead of the Nest. Bad choice for me. It was extremely difficult to connect my wires to this device. The holes are very small, release buttons very hard if you need to remove a wire. Material very cheap. Thermostat may work well but I didn't get that far. Returned it for the Nest which was super easy to install.

Good Thermostat but a pain to connect to my WiFi and Honeywell’s support was useless. Suggesting that because it could connect to my IPhone’s Hotspot. Their thermostat was working fine. But their software/internal device programming is inadequate. I had to alter my 2.5 mhz router password to accommodate this devices inadequate programming.

I'm not one to admit defeat, but I couldn't get this to work. I followed the instructions word by word, and tried more times than the normal person would have to get it to function. Even tried looking for help online. Fail. It looks and feels like a quality product, but I can't be helpful as far as the function because it just didn't work for me.
