Hi EbenO, this is not what you should expect. We recommend you checking the AC voltage between the R and C wires on the thermostat side at different moments during the day and immediately after the screen goes off. The thermostat should be receiving constant 20-30 VAC. If the voltage is not within range, please contact your HVAC contractor to take a look at this. You can contact our tech support team at (800) 633-3991 or send us a Private Message to our Honeywell Home Facebook account for further assistance. - Maria resideo

I am very happy overall with this thermostat, and have now upgraded myself into the current Century. It is a vast improvement over my older single set thermostat. Setup: Setup for me was fairly painless, and this is coming from someone who isn't DIY enabled in the least. I was lucky though since I was going from Honeywell to Honeywell and I have a more modern Heat Pump that had a C wire. Overall the manual was great and allowed me to understand what I needed to do and kept things simple. Only hard part in the installation was when I docked the unit back. Took a few seconds to come on and boot up. But once it came to life all was well and I'm happy that I was able to do it myself and not screw up. Getting the Unit Online and connected to my network was fairly simple and then getting it setup with the Honeywell Website wasn't bad at all. I appreciate that Honeywell has a Website and an App. Its nice to be able to control the settings and alerts the way I want. Usage: Once I got the unit online and schedule set its been fairly hands off. I do like the fact that in the morning/evening I can glance at the unit (since it resides in the master bedroom) and see the weather. It also shows the humidity in the house. Its a new data point I haven't had before and not sure what use I'd make of it, but nice all the same. I have noticed that the unit does tend to make sure the temperature is at the setting scheduled right when the schedule starts. That's nice because I can set it for my usual wake time and not have to guess do I need an extra 10 minutes to get the house warm in the morning. I also enjoy the fact that it will keep the house between a range, handy for when you get into early fall/spring where its cool in the morning hot during the day. Having to switch back and forth was a pain, its nice it will keep the upstairs comfortable. Only real con I have with the unit is the display is always on. Since it is in the master we have a new nightlight. It does dim and since you can change the color of the unit you can select something that suits the room. I'm very happy with this unit and it seems though out. The schedule you can set has four times, wake, leave, return, sleep. That seems to cover my day and it even has a vacation feature for extra savings when your out. Additionally with the Wi-Fi support I can adjust the temp remotely, or in another room. If you have a thing for Alexa, you can add this to your Alexa skills and change the temp. with your voice, but honestly I like the more set it up and forget it. If you need to update to something more modern this may be the way to go.

    Works Well, Still Learning

The Honeywell Smart color thermostat first of all looks amazing on a wall. It gives a very classy look, more so than other smart thermostats, with plenty of data displayed as you walk by. If you're not fully experienced with installation and are going it alone, MAKE SURE you take a photo of your existing thermostat's configuration in the event this does not work or you need to revert back to the original installation for any reason. The thermostat does require a "C-Wire". DO YOUR RESEARCH on this with your system BEFORE buying this thermostat. The c-wire essentially provides recharging power to the thermostat. Older system may not have one of these. (Note, there are workarounds to this which involve running a new wire or purchasing a transformer to power the device). But again, look at the existing thermostat you have BEFORE purchasing this. When in doubt, get an HVAC expert to come in. The system is constantly learning, and will adjust to your manual settings. For example, if you like it warmer while you're watching TV in the evening (maybe that's the coldest room in the house), the system will learn the approximate times you are in that room & move the temps accordingly. Mine is still learning after several weeks of being installed, so don't get frustrated. The ability to set "comfort times" is nice, in that you can say you want it cooler in night when sleeping (we love to curl up in blankets in a cool room), but don't want to be freezing in the morning when you get into the shower. The system will automatically turn itself on at the right time based on the time you say you want it to be warm (for example, I say I want it to be 72 degrees at 7 a.m.). Again, the system learns how long it takes to heat the house to 72 and will turn on at the appropriate time to give you the 72 degree warmth at 7 a.m. as expected. Adding to the WiFi using the app is easy, and with that can be controlled outside of the house. I can now see when the kids are changing the temps in the house and can set it back if I choose. You can also set it to keep your house at a lower temp while you're out of town (or just while at work), and again have it ready your house to the right temp when you're about to walk back in the door. From a functionality standpoint, it's great. But again, make sure your system will support the device before investing in it. If you're looking at the cost of the device plus the cost of an HVAC tech to wire it up you may want to just stick with what you have.

Our situation is a little different than most since we're retired. Our schedule around the house is very unpredictable, making 'learning thermostats' pretty useless for us. We did want to add some 'smart home' features, like wifi remote control and alexa integration. And of course, we want a thermostat that will switch between heating and cooling automagically. For comparison, we have a 1900sf ranch style house with two stage forced air heating and two stage air conditioning. This was replacing an older Honeywell thermostat. It took about 20 min including initial setup. Honeywell used the same mounting hole pattern so I didn't even have to drill new anchor holes. The setup was trivial, follow the walk-thru and answer the questions. One note, it is necessary to have a "C" wire (common), so that's something you should check. The unit is very small. It would have been nice if Honeywell had included a wall bezel because it's so much smaller than other thermostats and you may find a small painting job as part of your installation. The thermostat is 'registered' with the honeywell site during the setup process, assuming that wifi is configured. You then create a personal account at the site and link to the thermostat in order to control it. Control is available by web browser, smartphone app, and alexa/google voice. The new display is very clean and the menu system easy and intuitive. It displays the indoor temperature, exterior temperature from a local weather service, setpoint, time, and HAC status. There are menu selections across the top and setpoint up/down arrows. The touchscreen interface works very well. The smartphone app and web interface are particularly nice because our schedule is so irregular. We can set the 'away' setting when we leave and 'resume' on the way home. The alexa interface is pretty comprehensive, you can check the temperature, make it warmer or cooler by some degrees, or set to a fixed temperature. The thermostat works very well with multi-stage HAC, keeping the temperature in a much tighter range while not overcycling and using the lower energy stage setting. One really interesting feature is that the fan can be set to 'circulate' to move the air around when the HAC is off. The fan only will automatically come on about 1/3 of the time the HAC is off to circulate the air and balance the temperature throughout the house.

Okay, I’m impressed. The idea that I can change the temperature in my house without getting my lazy buns up out of my recliner is impressive indeed. But what I like most about this thermostat and its associated Android and iOS apps is their simplicity of use. Also, there are NO BATTERIES to try and remember to change every New Years! Yeah! This thermostat was installed in my 10 year old home with a standard, natural gas, forced air heating and cooling system. My son-in-law installed it for me and he said it was one of the simplest home maintenance tasks he’s ever done. He couldn’t believe the entire swap from old programmable thermostat to the new smart wi-fi thermostat only took him about 10 minutes. He said everything went perfect. He especially like the little wire marking tags provided by Honeywell. A very helpful idea to get everything hooked up correctly. It’s a little odd to think you must have an online account just to use a home thermostat, but it is necessary for your mobile devices to “talk” to the thermostat. Therefore the registration and setup process with Honeywell is necessarily more than just an “I own it” type of registration. You setup an account with Honeywell using an email address and a password. Then you link the new thermostat to that account using two codes from the thermostat. Then you verify that you actually have access to the thermostat by changing its temperature setting to one chosen by the registration website. Sounds complicated, but in practice the whole registration/setup process was actually very simple and most importantly everything went flawlessly. The real benefit of owning this thermostat only becomes apparent after you install the Honeywell Total Connect Comfort app on your mobile device(s). I installed this app on two Android phones, an iPhone, and an iPad. All installed and connected to the thermostat without any problems whatsoever. They all function perfectly and their user interfaces reflect the same simplicity as the thermostat itself. The app is important because without it and your home’s Wi-Fi connection this thermostat becomes just another programmable thermostat, albeit one with a very nice, color touchscreen. This thermostat does everything you would expect from a programmable thermostat, plus much more. But the great thing about it is it can all be done from your mobile device using touch control or voice commands. Honeywell added some nice features that I especially like and wanted to make mention of: First, the Honeywell software updates for this thermostat occur automatically during the night without bothering you at all. Love that. Second, the thermostat and mobile device apps all display the outdoor temperature and humidity. It must pull this localized data from the Internet because there is no outdoor sensor. Third, in addition to its standard On and Auto modes, the fan also has a unique Circulate mode that circulates the home’s air at random intervals totaling about 35% of the time. Finally, if you move and leave the thermostat behind, you can easily delete your Honeywell account. The new homeowners will then see a bright orange button on the thermostat’s touchscreen that says Register Online. Overall, I’m totally impressed with this Honeywell smart thermostat and its apps and I can highly recommend it without any reservation.

I've been researching and checking on these for a few years and I finally decided on this Honeywell. The unit itself came very well packaged and the instructions were easy to follow. I have an older oil burning furnace with only two wires, so no power wire. I had to purchased the "Venstar ACC0436 2-Wire Kit for all 24VAC Thermostats" to supply power to the device. It was all very easy to install and works great! I opted away from the "learning" thermostats and wanted this one because of the easy to use app and attractive display. It works great and I have no complaints. The app is great and easy to setup. It is so handy to have control away from home. I haven't had any wifi connectivity issues yet and I hope this gives me years of service.

    It keeps its promises

I’ve heard folks say that smart, remotely controlled thermostats such as the Honeywell Smart Color Thermostat are just for the lazy. Nope. They also are for people who have mobility issues, who need to control a system from miles away, or who just want a home that is more comfortable and more energy efficient. I had our regular HVAC fellow install the Honeywell Smart Color Thermostat while he was here for our autumn checkup, so I cannot speak to how difficult or easy it is to install. However, he told me he had put this unit in his own home and has begun recommending it to customers for its ease of use, its tendency to lower usage costs, and the fact that Honeywell thermostats have proved dependable. Now that it is installed in my home, this thermostat has delivered as promised. The first promise kept was how easy it is to get all the bells and whistles up and running, beginning with connecting to Wi-Fi, creating a Total Connect Comfort account, and registering the unit online (all needed to control the unit remotely). Next came selecting the Mode—Heat, Cool, Off, and my favorite: Automatic. I know this isn’t the only thermostat that can select whether to activate the heating or cooling system, but it’s the first one in my house, and now my house HVAC is functioning more like the system in my car. Next came establishing the schedules, and for that this unit has great range and flexibility. You can opt for “I’ll do it myself,” use the preset schedules, or begin with the preset schedules and make whatever adjustments you want. There are lots of combinations and setting options. One thing our HVAC guy urged me to try is setting the fan to Circulate. On Circulate, the fan comes on periodically – without heating or cooling – to distribute and mix the air. This helps even out the temperature and humidity differences that develop within and among rooms between heating and cooling cycles. This not only increases comfort, but also the time between heating or cooling cycles. And, because a fan uses less energy than a heating/cooling unit, that’s money saved. I knew I would like the Automatic feature of this thermostat, but our HVAC folks touted its “smart” feature. I was able to set my old thermostat to maintain a particular temperature for a specific time interval. If that meant raising or lowering the temperature at the start of that interval, the old thermostat would turn the system on a set number of minutes ahead of time – whether it actually needed that much time to attain the correct temperature or not. In contrast, the Honeywell Smart Color Thermostat “learns” how long my system takes to reach a given temperature and doesn’t waste energy turning the system on too soon. Finally, the Honeywell Smart Color Thermostat has adjustable security settings. If you are worried that a child, an impaired adult, or anyone else might change the unit’s settings, you can lock the settings and set a password for access. I guess a talented hacker could override that, but I don’t view my house as a likely hacker target.
