Convenient Connected Device, Difficult to Install

The thermostat itself is great. It is controllable by an app that you download on your phone. It is also compatible with Google Home which is really handy. Our home has a dual zone heat pump which made the installation of the device much more difficult and we had to hire a pro HVAC man to come and put it in for us so if that is your set up as well, plan on some extra expense to get this device going. If you have just a standard HVAC system you can install it yourself probably. There are some good install videos on the company's website.

    Ambient temp is erratic

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Ambient temp will jump down 2 degrees randomly when cooling (Haven't tried heating yet). I bought two of them and it does it on BOTH! So if the upstairs therm is at 78 it pops down to 76 randomly (then back up to 78). If I lower it to 77 is pops down to 75 randomly (then back up to 77). I put my old battery-operated Honeywell next to one of the new therms and it's solid as a rock for ambient reading. I actually called Honeywell and they gave me the lame old "reboot it" solution (which works for a while actually). But it seems to de-stabilize over time until factory reset - like it has a memory-leak in the coding. With a thoughtful update I think this could probably be fixed and be a really nice thermostat.

    Worst experience resolving installation issues

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I encountered some challenges with this purchase that I believe could be improved upon. Throughout the process, communication was not as effective as I had hoped, particularly regarding the installation schedule. Unfortunately, the installers did not arrive as planned, and despite reassurances from customer service representatives, it became clear there was some uncertainty around the involvement of the third-party installers. It might be beneficial for the company to enhance the communication and coordination with these contractors to ensure a smoother experience for customers in the future. Addressing these underlying issues with the 3rd party contractors (Install Inc.) could greatly improve the overall service and customer satisfaction. Stay away from planning installs

    Dissapointed

Disappointed....I purchased a RTH9580WF Thermostat in April of 2017 at Best Buy with a (2) two year protection plan. Within the first 90 days the unit began to exhibit a problem with the display and would arbitrarily change the color scheme. It is simple to restore to the programmed scheme and after reading reviews others were also complaining of the same issue. I did not find it that big of a deal so chose not to return/exchange. This last week I received an error message that WIfi connection was lost. Reset my router and attempted to re-coonect with no luck. I called Geek Squad (Best Buy) who had no insight whatsoever and told me to return to store. I then called Honeywell, was transferred (3) times and finally reached a Representative in a foreign country. I could barely understand the representative. The Representative told me the problem was with my Internet Provider. I have zero Internet issues, the highest download speeds (210 mbps) and in home 185 Wi-Fi. I was told to reset all of my router settings, change ports, etc., etc. Keep in mind the unit had been Wi-Fi connected for months without a glitch. Nothing was resolved so I removed the unit, drove 40 miles to my nearest BB and exchanged the unit. As the 9580wh was no longer available I was provided a 9585wf. I saw no physical change other than a modified menu and terrible color theme collection. Installed, programmed to my schedule and all was fine. Woke at 5 am the following day (today) to a house at 55 degrees (outside temp was 35 degrees. Tried a full reset with zero response. Checked everything, re-programmed and nothing. Removed the unit and installed my original thermostat that came with the home and had instant heat. I am now forced to drive another 40 miles one way and try to get a second replacement. I was extremely happy with the 9850WF even with the color scheme issues. I am hopeful BB will allow me to downgrade to a Lyric as the 9585WF was bad out of the box and the color schemes are bland at best. A bad experience. I rarely if ever write reviews but I felt this issue needed addressing. I am now stuck with a replacement that doesn't work, looks terrible with my decor and stuck with a $200.00 thermostat I would never have purchased based on it's current options. Very sorry to have to write a negative review about Honeywell that I have always promoted to my family and friends and have been a loyal customer......I want to clarify this is not a Best Buy issue. There support was excellent in the exchange process/warranty resolve.

    Not worth it

We have had this thermostat for two years then one day we woke up and it said the WiFi no longer worked on the screen. My husband called and a representative reported that we would have to buy another one...that the WiFi went and there was nothing they could do! So unless you plan on buying another one in two years I don’t recommend.

It will NOT keep the set point on hot or cold. It will not swap from hot to cold or cold to hot . It will not do ANYTHING I wanted it for. It’s screen glows all the time and there is no way to make it stop. Please do yourself a favor and get something else.

What was Honeywell thinking? The design is wanting at best, fake silver and plastic with no option to change the face plate. The feature set is top notch, but the install is defiantly not for the DIY. It requires a 5th wire for power, unfortunately my home was built in 1997 and did not have one. So 2 choices: disable manually controlling the fan, or rewire the HVAC. To me neither was an option. After some research I was able to purchase an add on PEK to add the 5th wire, but it had to be wired in at the furnace. I would guess most homes are older than mine and lack that 5th wire. In this premium smart thermostat space It should be made of metal or glass, include additional room sensors and the PEK in the box. The big names in smart thermostats are similarly priced and offer a lot more simplicity, design, and function. Honeywell has one of the biggest/ most renown names in HVAC and should take care to preserve their reputation by not churning out half baked products.

    Honeywell products are junk anymore

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Do NOT buy. Waste of money. Honeywell does not support this and other thermostats with their name on it. They refer you to a company called Resideo. Resideo will put you on hold for hours and still not answer even when you call during the recommended hours. I purchased this thermostat several months ago and have been trying to get my issue taken care of since the first month when this started. The thermostat reads "Sensor Error " and needs to be replaced. Plain and simple but no one will help. My electric company was selling these at a reduced price as a savings benefit to their customers. I'm upset with my electric company for even offering this now. Honeywell only has their name on this but no support. They are using the name ONLY to sell these. This thermostat is not saving me money, only costing me more. So if you are looking to save money, stay away from Honeywell/Resideo.

This is a good starter thermostat, if your looking for something with a big screen & honeywell makes great products, but the screen is capasitive & you have to touch it very firmly to get it to respond. Would go with the ecobee.

    Major Server Issues with App

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this highly rated T/Stat to monitor and control a 2nd home we have in northern Michigan. Installation and set up went fine and the t/stat functioned well for about 2 1/2 months. On Dec 23 and Jan 21, the server that controls the "Mytotalconnectcomfort" App lost communication. Both times I was leaving to return home and couldn't get hold of any any customer support. Needless to say, I've lost confidence in the product. It was -10 degrees outside the house on Jan 21st and I had no control over what the furnace was doing. When I finally contacted some one today, they said it might be tomorrow before the server issue is resolved.

Dont waste time pr money. Buy other than honeywell

Dont waste your time! Following the instruction provided , they make you wait 2 hours + to reach someone. When you do they will confirm everything is right, then ask you to buy a reader, test ocer 15 wires, tell you everything is within exceptional ranges, then have you exchange thermostat, then have you repeat all the same processes previously done, finally they tell you that you need HVAC, csll HVAC only to be told their wiring system is wrong and is NOT universal for all furnace. In fact i am told he has only seen this done twice as they frequently get calls from homeowners requesting service at honeywell's recommendation when they should know by video call/vonfirmation of installation most homes this thermostat is ñnr capabile. I spend 4 days , 9 hours holding to speak to an agent, and to be told not make for this system. Unless uounhave a 2018 or never furnace this doesnt give the properr watt needed to power up thermostat. Additional, there is no need to do a g wire jump which wtb didables your your auto fan. Those of us in a desert know how important it is to keep your air blower on to allow air flow in this dry climate. Emerson Wifi smart thermostat

    Touch screen is horrible.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This thermostat may be good for turning up heat or cooling the home remotely otherwise the touchscreen is junk especially if you have larger fingers. The touch screen needs to be more sensitive and some of the buttons are too close to the edge with a raised plastic border. You can't even put your finger on the buttons across the top.

    Worst smart thermostat

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY. The app sucks and doesn’t work, the device even though connected to the internet the app says it isn’t and the app consistently says failure to authenticate you. The touchscreen doesn’t work at all! Touch each letter 10 times to try and have it register. I think the first computer was better than this. The HIVE with some connectivity flaws is much better than this but I think Honeywell products in general suck and I will not be buying another one, EVER!

This has been a great thermostat until something went totally wrong with their app. Of course the app goes bad when you need it most. It has been two days now and it’s jacked, reset passwords but tells you no! Obviously not dependable anymore, to bad. Guess I have to go buy a Nest for another $250
