I must be coming close to full circle. Got my first "portable" in 1985; weighed 40 lbs and was called a portable because it had a handle attached. It was like the Chromebook in one respect: no hard drive and that is wee the comparison ends. Oh those darned old floppy discs. Computers are in constant evolution as you know and this is a step forward--love the cloud. My current laptop is a Macbook Pro. Maybe I am the only person in the world that feels Apple computers are overrated and overpriced but my MacBook has been a poor performer and the touchpad a nightmare. I like the direction in which the Chromebook is taking usi. It is not a laptop as we know them today. Google (like Apple} wants to own the electronic device world, therefore, our control is limited with the Chromebook. Even so, I like this little guy. It takes me where I want to go and is so light I can take where I want to go. Quiet, too--and uses very little power so I get long battery life. Buy it for what it is and you will love it.

This computer seems like a great buy for me, because I assumed that it was just as functional as other laptops. I was wrong. It couldn't connect to printer servers, couldn't download applications, and often shut down randomly. If you're buying this for a kid or as a supplement to a device you already have, go for it. Otherwise, pony up for a more expensive device.

It's just plain awful. Doesn't run half the program's I need. Chrome was an awful choice. Slow too.

a lot of nice features, but i'll be returning it

I've owned this Chromebook two weeks and I'm sad to say I'll be returning it. Pros: Lightweight and super thin. Runs almost silent. No fan sound. (Wow!) Just the right size at 14 inches. Comes with 1TB of Google drive storage and some free Gogo Inflight Wifi passes. No antivirus needed Decent little speakers Battery life an impressive 9 hrs I found the Chrome Remote Desktop app to work seamlessly. Cons: Browsing can get super laggy for some reason. (Not sure but I am assuming this is a processor speed issue, as the processor on this Chromebook is only 1 GB.) The Chrome browser sometimes freezes, especially with lots of tabs open. Like 8+ tabs. (I've seldom/never experienced the Chrome browser doing this on a Windows PC, and I am perplexed as to why it's doing it on a Chromebook.) Pages breakup and duplicate within the Chrome browser. (I even saw what appeared to be TV style static bouncing back and forth on a youtube page. It was bizarre.) Although the Chromebook boots up fast, ppen tabs often"die" or crash when you let the Chromebook sleep. You can't connect to a network printer-- you pretty much have to use cloud print and have a cloud print enabled printer, or have a regular printer connected to cloudprint via another computer. The right-click function is weird. You have to hold two fingers down on the touch pad and click. I thought I would get used to it but it's been two weeks, and it's still weird to me. It's uncomfortable. It's especially uncomfortable because I use the right click function ALL THE TIME for opening links in new tabs. The matte white cover of the Chromebook gets dirty super easily. (Any bit of dirt on your fingers transfer to the cover.) While the Chromebook is nice in a lot of ways, it's not for me. I constantly need to have a lot of tabs open and can't deal with lag. I'll be returning it.

    This is not a PC?

I love my chromebook! It works better than the Windows 8 laptop I returned. It does just about everything a regular windows PC is capable of. I hate Windows 8, Apple OS is too expensive, Google is the best in equality. At first the machine was running slow, and my internet wasn't connecting. Now it works fine, it is fast and so light and thin! I would recommend this to anybody. I'm a full-time graduate student!

I bought this for my wife, and she absolutely loves it. It's light and lightning fast. It's not a laptop that you can download programs onto. It's completely dedicated to the Internet.

    Pleasant to use

This is my first Chromebook, and I am very pleased with it. Besides looking quite sleek, it is a pleasure to use. It's very light and durable, and I really like the 14" screen size. It's quite zippy (better than I was hoping for), and the battery life doesn't disappoint. It's a great supplemental device for my daily use! It gives me that ultrabook experience when surfing the web, which is what I was really looking for, but without the price associated with a full Windows ultrabook. It's very sturdy too, so I can feel comfortable tossing it around like a tablet a little. The touchpad is a nice size, and is very responsive like an Apple touchpad. The keyboard is quite nice to type on. One thing I'm still getting used to is how to "right-click" for context menus. Just a note for people that do not realize this, but Chrome OS does not run Windows apps. If you know that going in, this won't disappoint!

I think this will do the job if you need a laptop mainly for web browsing, e-mail, and other light tasks. Even youtube and video chat works pretty well. Other than that I wouldn't recommend if you want to do gaming and install Windows applications since it runs the Chrome operating system. Otherwise its a great overall laptop specially if you wanted to gift to someone.

Light and easy to start up. Good for web and email which is what I expected. Screen color good. Be sure to pick up a wireless mouse to add to it. Touch pad was not the best, actually the worst I have used. For under $250 it is a reasonable choice.

Will Never, Ever Purchase an HP Product…

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Do not purchase ANY products from this company, especially Chromebooks. They are poorly made and poorly serviced. HP’s customer service knows nothing of either the customer or service. I have been awaiting shipment of my replacement Chromebook for over a month (details below). Due to the complexity of my issue I was assigned a Customer Relations Case Manager (Vivian Hernandez, PPS CSS-A Customer Relations Case Manager). Her co-worker, Paola Vanessa Picon was also included in all correspondence. The last I heard from either of these two ladies was on Aug 11th. I was told that my Chromebook would ship on Aug 28th. That day has come and gone. Despite several follow up emails and voice messages I have not heard back. Attempts to call several HP service numbers proved fruitless as the reps either could not access my case information or had non-functioning voice mail systems. So here’s my story... In November of 2014 I purchased an HP Chromebook 14. It had 4G of RAM and a 32G SDD. I was happy with it. While not as sleek as an Apple product, it met my needs. Around Feb or March of this year (2015) I noticed that some of the keys weren't working, specifically the I, J, U, T, and a few others. I installed all updates, and even power washed the unit, but no luck. I called HP, they agreed that the unit was defective and dispatched a box for return and repair. After about 2 weeks I received the unit back, but the keys STILL didn't work. Checking the paperwork it became clear that HP replaced the MOTHER board, not the KEY board. I called, complained and another box was dispatched. This repair took over three weeks due to some part shortage. I found this unacceptable, complained and my repair was expedited. I received my repaired unit in April, but noticed that Chrome would crash (He's Dead Jim) frequently. I put up with it for a while, but recently started to dig around. What I discovered is that I no longer have 4Gig of RAM, but 2 Gig and that my processes consume most of that. When the motherboard was replaced it had the incorrect RAM size. After contacting HP yet again, and speaking to the above case manager, it was agreed that a new Chromebook was in order. This was on July 28th. Any and all attempts to determine when (or if) my new Chromebook will ship have been met with radio silence. Emails are not answered and phone messages are not returned. Collectively I’ve spent hours either on hold or speaking to a rep. I’ve come to the conclusion that the replacement of my Chromebook was a lie, that HP felt that if they delayed the process long enough, I’d simply give up and go away. Purchase a product from this company if you feel you have no alternative, but do so knowing that in the event service is required (even under warranty) you’re basically on your own. You’ve been warned.

I love the look of the laptop and the size. My only problem with it is that the speakers are on the bottom so it's hard to hear anything coming from them. Otherwise, I love it!

The 14" inch screen made the decision a no brainer since I have been using the chrome OS for a couple of years now but wanted a bigger screen than the usual 11.6" screens for most chromebooks. This HP is pretty sturdy and the picture is adequate. I have gotten close to 10 hours of battery life for my usage.

This appeared to be the perfect laptop for my 68 year old mother in law. It is thin, easy to use and holds a charge for a long time. Then 9 months later a number of keys stopped working. This problem is known on the web. I spent 2 hours on hold for HP. The keyboard will need to be replaced. I suspect it will then last another 9 months. I highly recommend Chromebooks but I will stay away from HP.

Keyboard STOPS working - Common Problem

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

While the overall features are good and my family likes Chromebooks, HP's are notorious for the keyboards not working properly after a bit of use. I bought this for my Mom Christmas of 2014 and half the buttons no longer work. Tried cleaning, as well as the many suggestions offered. No luck. Research yourself before you buy. It's a common problem.

can't download games on it. My main use of it was playing sims & i couldn't even do that. It also doesn't have a cops lock button so i keep accidentally hitting the "search" key. overall wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless you're looking for a tablet with a keyboard.
