Customers are saying

Customers commend the 14" Laptop for its affordability, light weight, and fast performance. It is considered a great value for the price. While some users wish for a larger screen and backlit keyboard, the limited storage capacity at 128GB is seen as the only major downside.

A Bargain For Basic School Work & Netflix

Best Buy sells two versions of the HP 14 laptop with a 128gb solid state drive. This one is sometimes on sale for $199 and its "twin" is sometimes on sale for $299. What is the $100 difference? The less expensive version uses a Pentium Gold CPU instead of the Intel i3 CPU on the more expensive version. For school work, Microsoft Office, Netflix, email, and web browsing, both versions work exactly the same, about as well as most laptops selling for $400 to $600. However, a Pentium Gold CPU is limited to basic games and will be very slow for intensive photo editing such as Photoshop. The more expensive version can play moderately demanding games and would be less slow for photo editing. Both versions come with Windows 10 S Mode. This is a special version of Windows designed with K-12 schools in mind. It provides a high level of security by allowing you to only install apps and programs from the official Microsoft store. It prevents programs from starting automatically when you boot the computer or running in the background without your knowledge. That keeps your laptop safe from the malware that turns fast computers into slooow and useless machines over time. Windows 10 S mode combined with a solid state drive enables this computer to boot up faster than any computer I have used. You will be reading your new email within one minute of touching the power button. I bought TWO of the Intel i3 versions of this computer. On the first one, I turned OFF Windows 10 S mode so that I could download a printer driver I could not find in the Microsoft store. Within a week, a defective BIOS update downloaded from HP bricked the computer...killed it dead. The second HP 14 was left in Windows 10 S mode and continues to work like new. It gets updates almost everyday, but every update has been screened by Microsoft to work well with your computer. The official Microsoft store continues to update available programs an apps. When I looked for an app for my Canon printer I found nothing in July. When I looked again in August, the Store gave me a "searching" message. After 20 minutes or so of waiting, the Store located a "safe" version of the Canon printer driver that works perfectly. LESSON LEARNED: Windows 10 S Mode is the key to having a good experience with this laptop. Do not turn off S Mode without a VERY good reason.

Bought this laptop after seeing it in store under $300. Got home and opened it up to remove the RAM, come to find out there is an additional RAM slot. I added another RAM, now this laptop starts up and works almost twice as fast as most expensive brands and models. I tested it against newer Chromebooks and Windows 10 OS laptops and this definitely blows them all out of the ball park after my upgrades. Get this laptop while its hot, you won't regret it!!

This is a great student PC. I'm only giving it a 1 star because the 1 i got had broken speakers. It was working until i plugged a pair of 3.5mm headphones. The headphones worked great but as soon as i removed it, the sound did not transfer back to the computer speakers. Even after restarting multiple times, the PC would detect headphones were still plugged in therefore it would not play sounds in the speaker. Other than that issue, this laptop is quick specially w/ the SSD. Great bang for your buck.
