Good Budget laptop with few things lacking!!!

Review for HP Laptop 17.3” Intel Core i7 8GB DDR4 RAM 1TB HDD Windows 10. Great value laptop with many things lacking!! Overview: My SONY VAIO 17.3” Intel Core i5 finally crashed. So had to get a replacement in a hurry. Not much time for research so settled on this. My requirement was a brand name i7 17.3” laptop. This fit the bill. Bought it online for $549.99 with free shipping. When it dropped in price, a chat with Bestbuy.com got me a refund so it was a great value purchase for me. First Impression: It arrived in a big box. Unboxing was a no-brainer. First impression? Wow! The sleek black design won me over. I removed the two stickers on the wrist pad area, no sticky residue below. Plugged it in and started. There are almost no lights on the top of the laptop. My SONY had lights for almost every function on top. The HP start button is toward the top left. A white light on the right edge comes on. I noticed they have placed the lights on the edge. Battery, Ethernet, power on etc. Lights on top are for mute, caps lock etc. To use the numeric keypad, you push the num lock key. No light to indicate it’s on or off till you start pushing the numeric keys. The feel of the laptop is smooth on the wrists. The buttons are shallower than my SONY. The power cable has two parts. One part is wrapped up. The other part is shorter than my SONY counterpart so trying to sit close to a power outlet so as to avoid unwrapping the cable. The mousepad works great. No complaints so far. Initial Setup: When you turn it on, the windows 10 setup screen comes on. Followed the instructions and it installed windows 10. I’m familiar with it so no surprises there. Works great. The initial setup was a chore. It took over 3 hours and it was stuck at 48%. So I held down the power button and forced it shut. Then it refused to boot at all. Had to research on google how to access the BIOS on HP with is different from SONY. The BIOS had no boot order option. Turns out, I had to tap the F9 key to access the boot menu. I already had the Windows 10 clean install file on a USB which I inserted and it booted from there and did a clean install of windows 10. Optimization: The clean install gave me a beautiful, clean windows 10. All of the bloatware and HP crapware and third party software games and unnecessary apps were gone. I loved it! During the install I connected it to my wifi network. Once the main desktop appeared. I went to Start>Settings>Update and right click and pinned it to the start menu since I was going to use it a lot. There were tons of windows 10 updates and it took a couple of hours to install them all. Next I downloaded iobit driver booster free. This updated all of the outdated drivers. These two steps are critical for the health and speed of my laptop which now works great. Next I downloaded iobit uninstaller free to remove any unwanted software. I like this because it removes all left over residue after the program uninstall. I also removed many windows apps, toolbars/plugins. Next I downloaded iobit smartdefrag free which was able to defrag my hard disk better than the windows defrag. Note: CCcleaner gave me the orange screen of death. Not BSOD. But orange. I’ve used it for 7 years and now I gotta let it go. Next I downloaded the free iobit advanced care system which is doing a great job of weekly cleaning up my laptop. Next I downloaded iobit malware fighter free which removes everything that the antivirus missed. Next I downloaded Avast free antivirus which I run every week and it’s great. Things lacking: The wifi card is only single band and has no Bluetooth. I upgraded to the Broadcom dual band wifi card. With this card I can connect to my 5Ghz band on the router and get speeds of upto 867MB AND have Bluetooth! Wish HP would have included it. It really needs light indicators on top not on the edges. The Ethernet port can handle only 100MB. It’s NOT gigabit Ethernet! Major fail! The screen resolution of 1600x900 is what I had before so no complaints. I will eventually upgrade the RAM and get a SSD anyway. The disc drive makes a sshwoosh sound every 10 min but I disabled it in device manager and now it’s quiet till I figure out a permanent solution for this. I’m using an external wireless Microsoft Mouse and an external HDD to backup all my data. Conclusion: After optimization, my laptop is now superfast, lightweight, and a delight to use. The fan is quiet. My SONY fan was like an airplane taking off all the time! This is a great value laptop at $400 and I got all the must have features and upgraded for the rest. Highly recommended!

You generally get what you pay for...

First, on sale for $549. You will be hard pressed to find any laptop with latest i7 at this price. I wanted a 17" simply for the fact that my farsightedness is problematic now. I would have preferred a 1080P monitor, but the difference is $100-300 (never mind the increase if you want 1440P or 4K) if you want to keep the other specs the same. I didn't need the battery drain of a touch screen, nor the functionality. I wanted the best CPU I could get in a laptop for under $800. You can get a laptop elsewhere that beats the i7-7500U but it will have too many more things draining the battery (anything better than an i7-6700HQ is going to push the price way up over $1,000). I don't need a speedy SSD because I can simply upgrade later when I'm ready to boost. I don't need the backlit keys, when a light switch or daylight will work just fine. I will probably upgrade the memory later, but 8 GB is quite sufficient. Other laptops cut corners by using DDR3 instead of DDR4, that was a plus with this one. I don't need a powerful discrete GPU, I'm not running games or design programs on it. The Intel combo of CPU/GPU is quite powerful compared to any earlier generations (and all AMD CPU/GPU offerings). As stated by others, this is no battery wonder, but it is enough. If you need more, the battery is removable and an extra battery would be a good investment. The best laptop review sites recommend about 40% backlight level as well as integrated GPU (bypassing discrete if equipped; this one is integrated) and other power saving measures. Two things were annoying but not deal breakers: no gig-Ethernet (or USB 3.1 and/or Thunderbird to adapt to gig-Ethernet) and N instead of AC wi-fi. If you need gig-Ethernet and/or AC wi-fi, this is not the computer you're looking for.... I didn't need the included DVD, but I will eventually convert that over to a SATA storage device with an aftermarket adapter. I would have preferred a 7200 rpm HDD or a SSHD (solid-state hybrid drive) over the 5400 rpm HDD, but that too is preference rather than need. Ultimately for me the 1T drive will be a data drive. For now it is the boot drive. The webcam is no champion, but I don't demand much from it. It's not super sturdy, but it is not flimsy either. It feels lightweight to me, but I'm over 6 feet (and grew up in Texas) so I'm used to everything bigger. You may prefer the reputation of Dell or Lenovo, but their offerings (on sale or regular price are mostly at a premium-+$50-100 for the same specs). Dell really lost a customer with me when I originally ordered an XPS 15 screamer with way too much stuff for over $2,000 total order; lost me by authorizing charges on my credit card three times the actual price which took a week before that was straightened out and my balance was again made available after multiple phone calls to multiple departments and multiple credit card departments to ultimately cancel the order. I was mortified by "Big Blue" and the leviathan of industry. I will only ever buy from brick and mortar stores after that and reading about the recommendation of "try before you keep" by laptop reviewers. I suspect "open box" items will become more and more readily available as consumers learn this little trick. I recommend updating all of the drivers (most of them were already up-to-date, but your experience may be different).

Yes, this is a real review :) I bought this on 11/27/16 and I am thoroughly pleased with it. It is an affordable laptop with a blazing fast i7 processor. Now, bear in mind I'm coming off a three-year-old Celeron processor laptop, but oh my goodness, the difference in speed and quality is immense. I will never cheap out and buy a "cheaper" laptop ever again. I enjoy making Youtube videos. I was actually running Sony Movie Studio on my Celeron and it would take 15 seconds to load, and rendering times were atrocious. WIth this laptop, it takes 2 seconds to boot the program, and rendering movies takes a fourth of the time. That's just one of MANY examples of increased speed I've experienced. Ok, one more example -- I also create and render music in Fruityloops, and again, this laptop is light-years ahead of my other laptop in terms of speed. It's SO refreshing and awesome. Oh, and I use Photoshop religiously, and again, very fast. Upon booting up this computer for the first time, I immediately started the "dreaded" process of uninstalling bloatware. This laptop didn't have as much as I expected. If you know what you're doing, you can get rid of the bloatware in about 30 minutes (anti-virus trial, Wild Tangent Games, and some other junk that just takes a simple "Right-click, Uninstall" in the Start menu). Another 1.5 hours downloading and installing updates. About two hours to get this laptop into tip-top shape. Don't forget to De-frag after that :) I partitioned the C drive to 100GB and left the rest for storage. Simple and easy. Another Bestbuy customer complained about the speakers. While I respect the opinion, one shouldn't expect incredible sound from laptop speakers. I hooked up my Harman/Kardon speakers and it sounds incredibly good. Setting up my printer took less than a minute. It found the printer immediately over my wireless network and I set as the default. Remember the days of putting in discs to set those things up? Perish the thought. Build quality feels great. It's got a hefty feel to it. It's plastic, yes, but it doesn't feel cheap to me. I could go on and on. If you're looking for a quality, fast laptop, this will greatly satisfy. I give it an A+

So far this has been a good buy. Getting familiar with WIN10 is not too bad. But really, what would it have cost for HP to include Bluetooth internally? ...a half a US dollar?? Never the less, SO FAR this is a good buy. :)

I just bought this laptop after using my 2008 one on Vista. Vista is being dropped for any updates by browsers and it will also meet by its creator MS sooner if not later. So I started shopping for the latest models and this one grabbed my attention and so it did not disappointed. I am not a gamer but it blazing fast and the monitor is very bright for me. I am very happy with it so far. By the way, this is my first HP laptop.

My review is mostly based against my previous Lenovo Thinkpad laptop with Windows XP. Since Sony is no longer making laptop computers, my choices were narrowed down to Dell or HP. I will not purchase another Lenovo again. My previous one started having hardware issues very early. The CD-ROM drive would not read a disc, keyboard keys broke and popped out, cooling fan stopped working etc. My decision for picking the HP over the Dell is because Dell's computers with similar specs would cost way more. Since the intel i7 is the fastest processor currently, so it further limits my choice to this particular model. This laptop seems to have all the features I need. I don't want a 2-in-1 laptop because I already have an iphone and ipad to use as my tablets. I can't comment on the reliability of the brand just yet because I've had this computer for 2 days. The screen is 17" big so it is pretty wide and big for a laptop computer. It's good for someone who want to watch movies and play games on it without moving the laptop around too much. For general internet use, I think it might be too big to carry around. The speed of this computer as expected is quite good with very minimal delays switching apps. I don't think I"m convinced to like Windows 10 just yet. It seems there are so many hidden menus and sub-menus to find one feature that I need. The one thing I was having a lot of issues with Windows 10 is the Mail application. It took me hours of testing with different ports and server's name to be able to retrieve my emails. This app took a very long time to do the initial "sync" after I added an account. It seems Windows 10 is very strict on the mail settings inputted matching exactly to server certificate. With a couple of improvements below could have earn my 5 stars. 1. The two buttons under the touchpad are very stiff and noisy as I press them. They feel very cheap and poorly made because of that. 2. There are a lot of usable space all around the keyboard, HP could have spaced out the keys better or maybe adding more keys/buttons for individual settings. 3. I am not able to adjust any screen settings other than the brightness. No contrast, color temperature settings? 4. A better mail client should be included. Outlook is nice but you have to pay to use it. The Windows 10 Mail app gets the job done if you just want to send/retrieve emails. But it's really lacking customization and options compared to Outlook. Setting up POP3 was a pain. Never had any issues with Outlook Express on the Windows XP. 5. The textured exterior finish look/feel cheap and could be a pain to clean as dirt traps between the grooves. I'd prefer the traditional smooth finish.

I have to that this notebook is outstanding with all the specs I wanted from intel. It kind of feel a little lag in performance but that's alright. Light games running normal range for the price of this piece of software and hardware. You get what you paid for perhaps. 7thgen i7; 8gb ddr4; 1tb; overall it's much better than my last one hahahaaa.

Very nice 17inch screen monitor quality is good not too heavy (maybe because case is plastic) enough usb ports and cd/dvd rom speaker is not great but good enough. keyboard is big and nice enough had side numeric pad. I have not tried the camera but I am sure it is not the best. I say all in all this laptop is good. Only disappointment is the noise. At night you can hear the fan pretty loud. I have another HP laptop (M1Y29UA#ABA) very quite than this thing. I am still thinking about if I should keep it.

First off i would like to start off by saying that this is by far one of the best laptops i have owned to date. In terms of speed and processing power this takes the cake. I am really disappointed however in the battery life of this computer. Listed in the specifications for battery life is 7.5 hours; with my laptop at full charge it could barely muster 3.5 hours. The battery life for me was the deciding factor between this laptop and another i was thinking about, and that is why it is so disappointing to me.

The default resolution for the 17' screen makes the type teeny tiny and it is a light gray on a bright white background - could barely see it. I spent the better part of a day trying to calibrate the screen and trying anything I could find to increase the contrast. No luck and I had to return the laptop. Not ever had this problem with HP laptops before. There is simply a gross lack of color and contrast with the machine I got.

Geek squad thought it was a hardware issue but since i was 8 days past the 15 day exhange window they are unable to help me. I am left without a computer while they wait to see if HP will replace it. Poor product and poor service. Will not purchase a computer from HP or BestBuy again
