You will save money -- and time -- buying the high-yield cartridges rather than the standard ones. But . . . the multi-packs do not include the black cartridge, forcing you to buy it separately. That's ridiculous.
Granted, black is the most used and so needs to be replaced more often, but why not make it part of the multi-pack as well as available as a stand-alone purchase? For one thing, as part of a multi-pack, one can assume it would be less expensive than when bought alone, thus saving the consumer at least a little bit on ink, which already can cost more than the printer after two replacements.

Everyone knows that printers are sold dirt cheap, with the manufacturers making their money on ink and/or toner. HP is the same as everyone else in that business. But the quality of HP black ink is outstanding: until you get to the very end of the package, you get very crisp, even black print, and given the framework of the industry, you get good value for your money. The best deal is the XL package, you get about twice as much printing done, at less than twice the price of the "regular" package.

Purchased an HP printer from BB a 1 1/2 yrs ago. Have purchased ink cartridges a few times since then. Finally realized with the help of an associate that it is best to purchase the larger size black cartridge since I use it much faster than the other colors I need. I get very good quality from my printer and ink and am grateful the ink is not as expensive as the kind used with my last printer. Not being "techy", I find it very easy to change the cartridges and am now able to do so without reading directions.

When purchasing ink for a printer, I am often tempted by the cheaper refill option for my black ink. Even though I know it will deplete faster and put me in a need for another refill sooner, it always crosses my mind. Lately, I have started to become more aware of this habit and have smartened up to the greater yield the XL cartridges give me for just a small price increase. If possible, try and pick up the XL cartridges when you can, they make quite a bit of a difference in cartridge longevity.
