I am sorry that you had this problem. The low ink message is designed to give you fair warning that you might need to get a replacement soon. That way you don't have to rush to the store or wait for a delivery to finish printing something.
Low ink does not cause illegible prints. It is probable that the printhead inside the printer is clogged and not allowing ink through to the paper very well. There is a cleaning routine available from the printer's menu used to clear out the clogs.
To prevent this type of problem always use the power button on the printer itself to turn your printer off. That gives it time to position the cartridge so it is protected from excessive drying, which leads to clogs.
