It’s easy to understand why you’d feel put off, considering you’ve been unable to use the duplex feature and have encountered difficulty printing photos. I want to help you remedy these issues, so I’ll provide some resources I hope will accomplish that goal.
First, I just consulted the user manual for this model, and the device does contain a manual two-sided-printing feature. To learn how to use that, I recommend you consult the main user manual in the below. In the table of contents, click on “Print Using a Computer” to reach the respective section, then look for “Print on Both Sides of the Page.” Find that manual here:

I can’t tell from your review what problems you’ve encountered printing photos, but you might gain useful information from a document on our support site on improving print quality, including faded or streaked prints, color or black ink not printing properly or at all, and blurred or fuzzy text. It is the poorest quality printer I have even owned, and that includes my first one in 1974, a dot-matrix one. The first time I used it, it jammed and produced streaks and skips.

Also, be aware that the paper feeds from the back. So, check your area where the printer will be, to see if there is enough room for you to use it.
