great midrange laptop but with major flaws

I bought this computer on thanksgiving Friday deal for $699 to retire my 4 year old HP laptop that was giving me a lot of problems. Now specs on this laptop is great with I7 intel processor, 16gb ddr4 ram with integrated graphics as in my case I only use it for web surfing, socializing, watching videos, playing music and watching movies. Now for basic computing and snappy surfing this laptop will work really well. but in my case I noticed a major flaw, when you connect headphones the bang & olefsun gets disabled and you can only raise or lower volume so you can't tweak with settings on the sound. I also noticed that sometimes with headphones the bass will fade but you will have to un hook and re hook the headphone jack and then sound will be fine. so I decided since the volume can't be tweaked with connected through headphones then I decided to return the item. this is the only laptop in past 7 years that I had having this issue. I even went to best buy and checked another hp envy model and that also had the same thing as once you connect the headphones you can't tweak with sound settings. so for this reason I decided to return this model and swap it with another brand. hope this helps some people to decide whether to go with this model or not.

    Difficult Keyboard

    Posted .

I was attracted by the $749 price for a 16gb 1tb laptop. It works great, but the silver keyboard even with backlighting is very difficult to use unless you are practically on top of it. I had noticed this problem on a prior family laptop, but forgot about it when choosing this laptop. I would advise choosing a different laptop with black keys that have backlighting, even if you have to pay more for it.

Not the worst, but definitely disappointed

Originally purchased yesterday. Got home and first the trackpad wasn't working when I was going through the setup process then I noticed how loud the fan was but I thought it was just because of the initial setup but IT WOULDN'T STOP! I changed the performance settings, battery, and graphics. Didn't download anything just browsing the web. Even if the laptop is just idle, FAN IS STILL LOUD as if it's overheating but it's cool to the touch. Took it back this afternoon and exchanged it thinking maybe it was just a faulty laptop. NOPE, the noise has yet to stop. I put my ear to the one on display in the store, SILENCE. Contacted HP, read forums nothing seems to resolve it. Definitely disappointed because it's really a nice laptop but my sanity isn't allowing me to get past the noise.

Warning Battery Recall on This One

Here is the link for the battery recall. https://h30686.www3.hp.com/?lang=en-US. Purchased this laptop in December and just found out that the battery is suspect. I loved this unit but the battery issue is not good. I remind you before you buy this make sure your laptop was manufactured during the dates they state in the recall.

    Worst cooling system ever

So I bought this laptop on Black Friday to replace my old laptop from 2012. I had my two tech friends look at it, and they both said it was a great computer. I have been noticing lately though (past few months) that this thing runs HOT! I mean it runs hotter on a table than my 2012 laptop does on the rug. And this is when I'm not doing anything either. Now I live basically in an attic (3rd floor), so it gets hot in the summers. Never had a problem with the old laptop overheating though. This one... It will heat up within minutes of turning on. I'm scared to use it now because I'm afraid the inside will melt. Tried buying a cooling pad from Best Buy. Had to return it because it didn't help the laptop whatsoever. I'm starting to think this computer will never stay cool. Overall, good laptop especially for gaming. Only downside... THE COOLING SYSTEM NEEDS TONS OF WORK!

over all good product - battery sucks

Good laptop for the price I paid (699). so far the only issue I have is the battery life on this. It only lasts about 4 hours after a full charge and regular normal usage (internet, email, etc. no games) as opposed to what the ad says (10 hours)

    Terrible Keyboard

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This computer has most but not all of the features I was looking for. The greatest disappointment and the reason I am returning the laptop is the keyboard. The computer is silver grey, the keys are silver grey and the printed letters and numbers are light grey. The only way to actually see what is written on the keys is to hold the keyboard at a 90* angle under a strong light. I wish a little common sense had prevailed in the design... even printing the letters in black instead of grey would have made the keyboard more useable.

Touchscreen issues and not a silent computer

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Despite the beautiful graphics in the 15.6'' monitor and the great sound, the touchscreen presents issues. It automatically starts clicking on several parts of the left part of the screen simultaneously and, therefore, opening the programs in that part of the desktop. Also, the mouse tends to move to another place than the one intended. I was expecting a much more stable HP model. Also, it's not a very silent computer while processing data or working in heavy programs.

    Keypad Unacceptable

Seems fine overall but my old HP Envy had a black keyboard with white keys that was readable during the day and very readable at night with the backlit feature. But this one is silver keys with gray letters and poor contrast and not very visible during the day or poor lighting. OK in dark when backlit. Sometimes "cooler" is not better.

Poor quality, HP customer service sucks

I got this laptop about a month ago and after about 3 weeks, the fan or the hard drive started to make a horrible continuous buzz .I called the HP customer service and after about 40 mins on the phone with a guy in India, trying to convince me to buy additional extra plans and asking me to pay for the shipping to the repair facility I decided to take the laptop back to Best Buy and get a Lenovo instead. I had Lenovo's and Dell none of them broke in the first month of use so pretty dissapointed with the quality and service from HP. I'll stick with Lenovo, no more HP products for me. Kudos to the guys at Geek Squad in Issaquah, WA for their professionalism and excelent customer service.

    not a huge fan

the power button is on the side corner rather than the inside, so it gets stuck on the zipper of the case I have and keeps getting indented, or if you accidentally drop it, there's no chance of turning it back on, and it takes over a month to fix it at best buy. this is the second time I have to get it fixed. also, the sound doesn't work half the time. my HDMI cord and TV were fine, but I always have to borrow a laptop from someone for the sound to work. the sound just stops working sometimes too and it's really annoying. I probably restart this computer 2x a day and I've only had it since October. I give it starts because it is a sleek looking laptop and the keyboard is very nice. I wish I could trade this out for a more practical home button designed laptop.
