Great black-and-white laser printer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.If you are still using an inkjet printer and rarely need to print in color, this HP LaserJet Pro M404n Black-and-White Printer is a great option for you. It becomes an even better option if you also rarely need to print on both sides of a page although it can still be done manually, if needed. Another important thing to note is the fact that in order to actually use this printer, it must either be connected to your network via a wired ethernet cable or to your computer via a USB cable. It does not have the ability to connect to your network or computer wirelessly and neither of these cables are included with the product. As long as you are aware of these things and it fits the type of printer you require, you really can’t go wrong with this printer. Rather than re-list all of the features which are already clearly listed here, I will simply state that based on my experience, the printer and all of its features were easy to use and worked as described and expected. The print speed and quality are excellent, especially in comparison to the old inkjet printer I used before. The replacement toner cartridges are a bit pricey but the great thing about them is they have much higher yields than typical inkjet printer cartridges and they do not dry out if you don’t use them for an extended period of time which tends to happen with inkjet printers. As a result, they last far longer without any sort of waste so in the long-run, you end up saving money and really getting your money’s worth out of each toner cartridge. In summary, this is an amazing black-and-white laser printer and I highly recommend it to those of you who understand its designed use and connectivity limitations.

You have to download the software drivers from HP. LCD display is very small and difficult to see and read. I could not get the firmware to update. I contacted HP support and spoke to a young lady who was very nice, but she was of no help. Please be aware this model does NOT have wireless networking (which I already knew that.) This only connects via wired network or USB cable. This printer only includes a starter cartridge that is good for about 1500 pages. I've been working with computers for 30 years. This thing is a hassle. HP has really gone downhill. The printer is fast and seems to work well once you get it setup. I wish I could have my old Samsung laser printer back. It was so much easier to setup and use. Summary: Decent printer, setup is a real hassle.

PCL 6 drivers caused issues with PDFs being printed in wingdings. Had to change installed version but other than that it works fine. It also sometimes doesn't wake up when being printed to.
