Great Performance in a Small Package

This is one of the best PC's I've ever purchased. We bought this on a small budget to get us by until we could afford a better model, and we are still completely happy with the speed and performance of this machine. I've paid three times the price of this model in the past for inferior machines. I am definitely proud of this model!

Is a great deal for the money, it is slow

Was a great deal for the money. The RAM is upgradeable to 16gb but comes with 4gb. Harddrive is nice size. With all these qualities, it is slow and freezes. It has windows 8 and has 4gb of RAM so it may need more RAM.

It's McAfee slowing everything down! Otherwise OK.

My 2005 XPS-400 finally gave up the ghost so I needed a new computer. I don't work from home anymore and don't game so I just needed a simple box for internet, email and Netflix/Hulu streaming. Those of you complaining that the computer is slow when doing CAD or other intensive applications are silly for buying this computer in the first place. It does everything I need (one at a time) just fine. I see many complaints that the computer is slow. It is, but if you want fast go spend more money. However, I notice that when the computer is "bogged down," a quick check of the Task Manager shows that it is the pre-installed McAfee anitvirus that is hogging the computer's CPU time. And this thing doesn't have a lot of CPU to spare!. So I will be getting rid of McAfee (never liked it anyway) when it expires. Aside from McAfee, the thing runs like it should. Getting started with Windows 8.1 was very easy and I'm learning it. (Was a loyal XP user to the bitter end). I disliked the chiclet keyboard, but am very happy to simply use my old one. The boxy super cheap mouse works fine. I hit a small snag installing an extra 4 GB RAM. When first installed, the system would see the ram, but not use it, putting the entire extra stick in "Hardware Reserved." I tried tweaking system settings to no avail. Finally called HP support and they were amazing. They did the thing where the tech, Sanjay, takes over the computer. We finally tried switching the RAM Slots the Stock and New RAM were in and the dang thing worked and the computer is now using the additional RAM. He still suspected a bad RAM slot and sent me a package to return the computer for service at no charge if it stops working. Top notch tech support. So, if you want a cheap computer, buy this one. Replace McAfee with something that doesn't hog resources as much and you will be fine. Thanks.

Could not believe how bad this tower ran. Right out of the box and it was a Mutt! First new computer in 10 yrs [usually I buy used and get them tuned up]. But with the ending of XP I decided to get new. On the internet the processor could not do anything. Its was slower than my 6 yr old Dell. Took it back and got a 2nd Slimline that was supposedly the next grade up and THAT was a piece of slow , locking up piece of junk! Could hear it actually trying to run and figure out what to do. HP really blew it with the Slim line series. Decided to go with a laptop from another maker and it is running great. No HP for a long, long time for me or my family

Wow, I am stunned at how bad this computer is. I purchased it over the weekend, and it arrived today. Right out of the box this computer is an absolute stinker. 1) Slow as molasses. Seriously, this thing goes at snail speed. In fact, a snail might be faster. And it's not just the internet that's slow... the computer ITSELF lags and lags. I have tried speeding it up in every way I can think of to no avail. It's among the slowest computers I've ever used. My 3 year old computer at work has more life in it than this piece of garbage. 2) Misses keys while you type. Yes, that's right. Fresh out of the box and I've tried two different keyboards... the old one that worked on my last computer just fine, and the new one that came with. Neither one of them worked one hundred percnt of the time. I keep having to type back just to make sure I'm not missing letters. And missing spaces when the space bar is pressed, which it seems prone to do. 3) Windows 8. Wow, I hate this OS worse than I imagined I would. Give me back Windows 7... or better yet, my beloved XP, which to me was hands down the best OS they ever put out. Well, this piece o trash is going to be going back. I can't stand it, not evenfor a day. I want to pitch it out a window. And that's not good considering it's about 2 hours old. I'm going to look for a different computer, maybe one that still has Windows 7. If you're thinking about this... don't do it. Just don't. Save yourself the headache and expense, and avoid this at all costs. Clearly, you get what you pay for.

The computer was really slow, I returned it the day after I bought it. I just couldn't handle how terrible it ran. I started it up and the computer couldn't keep up with my typing, it took about 10 minutes to open up Internet Explorer 8. It really just isn't worth the $279.99, regardless it being made in 2012, it should still perform better than my first computer, which it doesn't. I wasn't expecting much out of it other than smooth running, but it didn't even give me that.

I should have read the reviews first. I like Hp products that's why I bought it. I didn't need something big and expensive so the price was right. But it was hard to set up, it is so slow. Cheap keyboard could not keep up with my typing. Pop ups from the beginning ..... I couldn't do anything because of the pop ups. Took it back to the store after a week very frustrated and was told that It had a virus and it would cost 100.00 to fix it. Not happy at all I did not want to spend more money and I could not return it because it was my fault It has a virus. I believe it came with the virus and should have been given another one. It has gotten worse now I can't log onto the internet. I have to take it to somebody to get a new 2 week old computer fix. It will not be Best Buy.,

In January we bought a HP laptop with the same Ram and memory as this desktop... thought it would be perfect for us. Had no issues with the laptop. Set up the Desktop.. WOW what a difference. Every web page we went on it had to recover the site. I did 4.. yes count them 4.. system recoveries since I received this desktop on Monday.. it is not Wednesday and still have not been able to use it. It is being boxed up and taken back to the store!

    One to Avoid

I read all the reviews, half good, half bad, from "it's a dud" to "I LOVE MY NEW HP!" I went ahead and bought it, hoping the optimists were right. They were wrong. I took it home, and even after two reimagings, and over a week of effort, I could not even get this pc's Internet Explorer to run an internet speed test without locking up from all the effort. Got online with HP support and got someone with a minor grasp of the English language who could only suggest I re-image the pc and nothing else when I told them that did not help. I took it back and got my refund. Unfortunately (?), another pc model on the floor was out of stock, so I went home empty handed. DO NOT BUY THIS HP MODEL!!! You have been warned.

    So Slow!!!

After years of laptops and iPads, I recently decided it would be nice to return to a good, old-fashioned desktop. Since it's for personal use, nothing complicated, I figured this one would suffice. This PC is SLOW as molasses. Even my first computer in the early 90's that used dial-up was faster. After hours on the phone going through the motions with HP tech support didn't help, they suggested it might be my internet connection, so I got a new router. It did not help. If only I had read the reviews first, I could have saved myself a lot of time and frustration. I purchased the bundle with 23" monitor (which I absolutely love) over a month ago. I will see if the store techs can do something to improve performance or request an exchange. Too bad, I really wanted to like it...

Bought a HP 5 years ago. It finally gave up. Bought this one thinking good quality it being HP. I was wrong. Very very slow. Does not access Internet through built in adapter and will not recognize an external Wi-Fi adapter that can be plugged in. Get good signal on my laptop for Wi-Fi but not this desktop. Could not get back to store soon enough since I live 30+ miles from nearest store. Best Buy needs to stop carrying this model. It brings down the credibility and respect Best Buy stands for.

We where replacing a E-Machine that was like 8 years old running XP. It was just use for internet, Facebook & emails. It actually was running faster an upload web pages faster than this HP. I would not recommend it to anybody.
