The most beautiful, portable 2-in1 I've ever used
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.HP Spectre Folio This is a premium device exuding quality, beauty and even the soft fragrance of a fine leather coat. Technically, it’s a 2-in-1 laptop, but with a much more intuitive and stable mechanism to slip from one mode to another with minimum effort, fuss or disturbance. There’s the laptop mode, media mode, tablet mode and, finally, folio mode (when it’s closed). Carrying it in folio mode is more secure than carrying other laptops due to the leather exterior and certainly more eye-catching as well. While you can put other devices in leather folio cases, they will be thicker and more cumbersome due to the device merely riding in its folio pocket. Not so with the Spectre Folio with the leather fused to the metal framework of the device to actually form its outer surface. With its rich, solid, quality appearance it’s as neat as it gets! The design of the hinge system is genius, and it's smooth and simple to take it from laptop to presentation/media mode to tablet mode and back. It's solid and very stable in any of its configurations. Its laptop mode is far more stable than any folding cover base or kickstand available and is even more stable than a number of laptops since the Spectre Folio screen isn’t top-heavy as some are. Strong magnets lock the screen in laptop mode and presentation/media mode, so it stays where you put it with virtually no movement while touching it or typing as, unfortunately, some laptops do. The 2-level backlit keyboard works wonderfully for me with good spacing between keys and good response from the keys for such a thin device, and it isn’t noisy while typing. The touchpad is highly accurate and smooth as silk. I noticed no false taps or touches on the touchpad while typing, and every time I tapped it (not clicked it down), it acted as though I had clicked it each and every time. Some prefer to fully depress the touchpad rather than just tap it, so it’s adjustable for that and other things too. Of course, the touchpad handles zooming in and out as well as other gestures. The power key is just above the keyboard on the left so you’ll have no accidental bumps allowing it to turn on while in your travel bag or otherwise known as “hot bagging.” The response of the CPU (i7-85550Y dual core 4 threads generation 8) is fast and sure, and despite all the downloading & installing I was doing at first, there was no heat, just a very slight warmth on the bottom, and that with no fan. Yes, this is a fanless design so no fan/air noise with only minimum warmth at times. Overall the HP Spectre Folio is quite fast with the i7 and the PCIe SSD in whatever you’re doing. Sound is a quad speaker arrangement through Bang & Olufsen running under a grill above the keyboard and below the screen when in laptop mode – sound is a little different when in presentation mode or tablet mode but still plenty loud for even old ears. Two powered Thunderbolt 3 ports are on the right side so you can handle 40 Gbit speeds with a Thunderbolt 3 dock while using only one USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 cable even while your Spectre Folio charges from a powered dock. That leaves you 2 other ports for other things. The 3rd port is a powered USB-C 3.1 port, but you can charge your Folio through any of the 3. I like that the power/data ports are on both sides, so you can charge it from either side, which is helpful depending on where the plug is located while you use the Spectre Folio. Obviously, with these ports you can run a host of devices along with multiple monitors to fill the role of workstation while allowing you to fold it up at the end of the day and take it with you. The 13.3"16:9 screen is clear and sharp (FHD 1920x1080 touch IPS panel) with a 4K screen option before the end of the year. Screen position in laptop mode is adjustable to work well on your lap or desk…at least, if you’re under 7’ I would say. I heard someone complain that you couldn’t adjust the screen enough while in laptop mode on your lap, but I’ve used it on mine and can easily see the screen even if I tilt it forward somewhat to avoid overhead light glare on the screen. No real problem with this unless, like I said, you are really tall putting your eyes way higher than the vast majority of people. It also has a HP TrueVision HD webcam with Windows Hello for facial recognition along with dual mics for conferencing. In tablet mode, the top side of your screen is a little higher than the bottom of your screen so using the included stylus is much easier than if it laid flat on your desk. The stylus has two programmable buttons for various options according to your preference – one of mine is set to erase and the other button to right-click for context menus while using the pen for navigation. I found that the pen writes very well on the screen. I used OneNote to test this out, and I was not disappointed; however, I’m no artist so my comments must stop with notetaking or rough sketching only. The nib in the pen is somewhat hard so it slides very easily on the Gorilla Glass 4 screen and does make little tapping noises while writing. The pen comes with a couple of other nibs, but I haven’t tried them as yet. A little softer nib will provide more friction for those wanting a more pen/paper feel while writing and will offer a less tapping noise. There’s enough weight (3.2 lbs) even when opening it without having to hold the lower part down while doing so. It feels substantial whether being carried or opened on your lap or desk. The leather exterior gives it a sure footing opened or secure handling while carrying in “folio” mode. Frankly, I appreciate a little weight in a laptop device, but don’t think it’s a burden to carry. Unless you’re married to 1.5 lb tablets, you will appreciate the solidity, stableness and feel of the Spectre Folio. It’s only .57” thick with the leather, so everything feels solid. It comes with a 65 Watt charger that can give you from zero battery charge to 50% charge in as little as 30 minutes. Battery life is claimed to be about 13+ hours with the i7 model, but from what I’m seeing a reasonable expectation from 9 to 10 is more like it; however, that will cover most people all day without charging. The HP Spectre Folio will offer another color of leather (Burgundy) by the end of the year as well as the 4K screen option. You can also opt for the i5 rather than the i7 and also for a 512 GB SSD or a 1 TB or 2 TB SSD along with 16 GB of RAM and the option for LTE 4 too. You can have a lot of options in one solid, beautiful package. Since the HP Spectre Folio gives you the feel of something to tuck under your arm and take with you wherever you go, there’s probably one thing HP could have included. If you’re a student or attend a lot of meetings or travel quite a bit, an added camera on the backside of the screen to take photos of board notes/white boards/expense receipts etc. would have rounded out the experience for these folks. The HP Spectre Folio is something special and unique. It is a very capable and attractive device offering just about anything you can desire. Of course, like most 2-in-1’s, it’s not your first pick for heavy photo/video work, 3D cad work or running AAA games. You could use it in conjunction with an eGPU through one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports, which would certainly up your game quite a bit in these areas. Short of that, it’s an ideal business and/or personal/classroom device that shouts quality and refinement while offering plenty of chops when it comes to productive work for nearly everyone.

Not good as a laptop
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well.... first, I blame myself. I should never have purchased a laptop online. The device is heavier than my current laptop and I can not use it on my lap because I cannot use it with the screen upright and when I push it back a little bit, it falls over. I really have not used it too much because of the above. I am still using my old (4 years old) laptop.

My New Work/Travel Companion
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was a bit skeptical when I heard that HP was offering a powerful 2-in-1 wrapped in a premium leather casing. Upon arrival, the HP Spectre Folio was packaged nicely and was like opening a present rather than unboxing a new piece of high tech. Setup was like any other laptop except that the HP Spectre Folio comes with Windows Hello (with facial recognition). I'm not a huge fan of using facial recognition to access my devices, but it does work and has infrared sensors so that it performs better in dark conditions than simple camera based facial recognition. Once up and running, the HP Spectre Folio has a Intel's latest 8th generation Core i7 processor with dual cores. Now this isn't the most robust processor, but it is cutting edge for power consumption and is more than enough processing power for daily work and leisure tasks. If you're into some heavy gaming or video editing, you'll likely want to look for a bigger system with dedicated GPU. For the rest of us, this is an excellent system that can run fast and smooth even with multiple programs running (Excel, web browser, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) I've used this system for about two weeks now and it's never missed a beat even when I was combining work and pleasure (Netflix). As far as design, I'm more than impressed with the quality feel of the leather. It feels like it'll go with you everywhere and still look nice, even if it gets bumped around the airplane and conference table. Only time will tell how it looks 5 years from now, but I'd be willing to bet it probably looks better with time after it ages. My current (or previous rather) 2-in-1 is a little awkward and I've never really used it as a tablet since doing so means the keyboard is fully exposed on the lower side. I just find this to be awkward and leaves the keyboard vulnerable to being damaged. That isn't the case with the HP Spectre Folio. You can use it as a laptop, no explanation needed. You can use in media mode. This is accomplished by the back of the display housing articulated in the middle which allows the screen to tilt forward and rest just above the touch pad. Look at the pictures for a better idea of what I'm talking about. It's nice that you still have access to the touch pad while in this mode and is ideal for airplanes, or sharing video while at a meeting. The final mode is of course as a tablet. This is done by continuing to tilt the display forward so that it lies flat against the keyboard. This is an excellent way to use the stylus pen as it is slightly tilted toward you rather than flat. It's also nice to use as a hand held tablet. The HP Spectre Folio is rated at 15 hours of battery life between charges which is excellent. Granted, this rating is for ideal and light use, I've still managed to go about 13 hours without a charge and still had battery left to spare. I didn't want to be caught without power, so I've always recharged, I had about 1-2 hours remaining in battery according to Windows. That's due in part to the low-power (consumption, still has plenty of processing power) processor and Solid State Drive (SSD). This allows the Folio to run with minimal power and an added benefit is that it is silent! There's no fan humming and blowing hot air! It also means super fast start ups since the drive doesn't have to spin up. If you haven't used a SSD before, I can't tell you how much better it is than your standard disk drives. The computer is silent, fast, and doesn't get fire hot when working hard. In conclusion, the HP Spectre Folio 2-in-1 is an excellent option for anyone looking for a great looking portable laptop. Even though HP has come up with an ingenious way to transform a laptop into a tablet (without simply folding the screen around and exposing the keyboard), this is primarily a laptop. You may find the tablet mode more functional, but I still prefer to surf the web the old fashion way. That being said, it's nice to know if you want to show something at a meeting, the tablet or media mode is convenient and stylish. I highly recommend this for anyone wanting a stylish addition to their tech. Pros: *Leather quality *Processing speed *Battery life *Value *Convenience *Innovative 2-in-1 design Cons: *More color options

Just buy a macu
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Granted, the leather made it slick but it started peeling off after 1 year. Second, the touch screen has stopped working. Nothing wrong with the screen but it may due to the hardware component. I barely used it. Not worth the amount I paid for

Innovative and sleek
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was never a 2 in 1 fan until now. This is an amazing machine. The leather case is just amazing. The feel, look and style is so impressive. It's of course whisper quiet since being fan less and the SSD. I had it at the office all closed up and a lot of people admired and commented on my "notebook", they thought it was a planner or paper notebook. Once I popped it open I could always see the jaws hit the floor. The theater type mode is great the way it kicks the screen back a tad. Moving the screen between different standing modes is at first cumbersome but becomes second nature after a while. I will unfortunately not put this tablet to full use since I feel its best for editing, tablet use etc. I do and will get plenty of use out of it but will hardly use the included pen. At least at this juncture in my life and career. The battery life claimed by HP is a couple hours beyond what I was able to achieve. Backlit keyboard is a great touch and needs to become common on all laptops. The screen is crisp and rich and the speakers are crisp and rich but like on any other thin machine they are nothing amazing. This laptop is a stunner and head turner while also providing plenty of power to get what you need done. Wow!

Nearly perfect
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I rarely give a 5 star rating, but the HP Spectre Folio is nearly perfect 5 star IF you are its intended buyer. This device is intended for someone wanting the ultimate Ultrabook 2-1 form factor. It is not for someone wanting the ultimate performance or the lowest price. Pros: -The aesthetics are amazing. It looks and feels like a high-end German car (bonus- it smells like one too!) -The screen is beautiful and very contrasty (rich colors) -The keyboard feels wonderful and has just the right key travel and sound. The backlight is multi-level and the back lighting stands out from the darker keys and keyboard deck -the keyboard also has dedicated keys for print screen, insert, and home/end. With the new print screen feature in Windows 10, this is a screen capture dream machine - tap the dedicated button and make the screen capture -The overall geometry of the design is amazing. Tent mode is so much nicer than other laptops with the trackpad still accessible. Tablet mode is wonderful - the leather back vs. most 2-1s where your fingers feel the folded over keyboard (yuk) -Audio (with adjustments) is pretty good and quite loud -This thing is as thin as a macbook pro (or thinner) and so much more capable. -Processor is plenty speedy for normal work task - feels very responsive -Battery life is outstanding. During normal use with 80% brightness I'm getting 10% - 15% drain per hour. By comparison under the same workloads my Surface Pro was dropping 20% or more. -3 USB-C ports is great - don't need the legacy ports. -Fanless design means it is always silent -Power button is internal - unlikely to 'hot bag' by getting accidentally pressed -Leather serves to insulate legs from heat and protects the laptop a bit from harm (vs. easily scratched or dented aluminum) -Even the power adapter looks classy with its woven cable -Pen included in the box -Usb-A adapter included in box -Did I mention it just looks incredible!!!?? Cons: -Fanless design means the CPU gets hot and slows down to keep itself cool. This is not an issue with normal workloads but does become an issue doing sustained tasks like video rendering (unlikely considering the target buyer) or a Google Meet (extremely likely considering the target buyer). Once the CPU cores really heat up, overall performance drops and this can happen with an errant Chrome or Edge tab playing some annoying video advertisement in the background. -The audio is not as good as a MacBook Pro or other device and without using the HP audio tuning software it sounds pretty bad actually. Very tinny. Considering the incredible thinness of the case, it is impressive. So if you buy this make sure you tune the sound profile -Expensive. For the same money, HPs own Spectre x360 offers a much faster quad-core CPU in a more traditional 2-1 -Right clicking on the trackpad is infuriating. It works about 1/3 of the time. This is my single biggest complaint about this device (and really, it is pretty minor) but man is it annoying If I could give 4.7 stars, I would. The tinny audio (especially out of the box), the balky right click, and the slowdown under sustained load are enough in my mind to shave a few tenths off a perfect rating. But overall, for a business machine the all-day battery, beautiful screen, wonderful keyboard, and unsurpassed luxurious form factor make this a great choice!

Luxurious Power Cloaked in Leather
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The HP Spectre Folio touch-screen laptop is a powerful performer, with the Intel Core i7 processor. Opening this laptop for the first time was quite a pleasant surprise. The case is actually made of leather with a beautiful cognac finish. It weighs 3.2 lb. storage is 256GB SSD. I charged the battery in about 2.5 hours. I got 10 hours of life fully charged. It features a 2 level backlit keyboard and has an excellent feel to the keyboard. Screen resolution is 1920 x 1080, quite impressive. CONCLUSION: With 2) Thunderbolt 3 jacks, this machine is ready to work and is sure to draw attention, in the boardroom or the classroom. Serves as a laptop, media or tablet and includes a stylus. Absolutely silent - no fans! Love the 3.5mm headphone jack. Highly Recommended.

Great Product. Possiable Pixel issues though
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this product and I must say I absolutely love it. Its the perfect combination of technology and design! Its the most attractive laptop/2-1 I have ever laid eyes on and it just feels right when using it. Its more than capable of everyday tasks, work, video watching! Its also great for very casual gaming. By casual it handled Final Fantasy Pocket edition on max settings with no slow downs at all. Mine did have a few dead pixels though, I returned the first one and got a second one with the same issue so I returned it as well. I will try again maybe the road because I absolutely love this laptop and I hope HP gets this fixed over the next several shipments of this product. I also am curious how the leather will hold up over time. But it is a GREAT product overall, just wish I could find on with no pixel issues.

Fantastic laptop with a twist of luxury!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. From the moment you unbox this laptop you’ll notice that HP went to great lengths to make the Spectre Folio more than just another laptop two in one. In terms of how it looks and feels it’s super nice. The leather is real and feels amazing. When the laptop is closed it looks like a nice leather journal. It’s thin and light and yet it still feels solid and well built. The keys on the keyboard are backlit and feel great to type on. In terms of hardware this laptop is top end with an i7 processor, plenty of ram and a solid state hard drive. With all of that this machine is fast! It boots up in just seconds and runs every software I’ve tried like Adobe and Microsoft Office smooth as butter. This notebook also supports Windows Hello which means it has a special camera that it uses for facial recognition to sign in to it with which works pretty good in most circumstances. The included Pen is also great and makes this the perfect computer for taking notes on or even drawing on. It does support pressure sentivity and tilt sensitivity to make the whole experience feel more like a real pen .. also the top acts like an eraser too or can be customized for other functions! Not just impressed with the features alone but it works amazingly well. This laptop uses USB C with power delivery to charge and has 3 ports (one is specific to charging) so you can easily add devices. HP did include and adapter cable for a Standard USB A type port. I really like the fact that it has the USB C ports because there are so many versatile uses for it! It also has a SD slot as well so you can easily load media that way as well. As you can see in the specs it does support the latest WiFi stands and has Bluetooth as well. The only place I feel it could be better is the sound hardly has any bass and is decent volume wise but like most laptop PCs lacks in the area of sound though is acceptable for watching movies or shows. Last the display is a HD resolution and really does look nice. The colors seem bright but not overly saturated and balanced. Battery life is amazing in this laptop! For standard light duty tasks and watching videos you could easily go all day with charge left to spare. Again mileage varies upon what your settings are and what tasks you’re doing but this machine it’s superb on battery. In all this is an excellent machine and for me what sets it apart is how it looks and feels. Performance wise this machine is top notch and really the only thing it doesn’t have is dedicated graphics which of course wouldn’t be possible in this thin and light design while keeping it cool and good on battery life. There is enough power to run lighter games and some on low graphic settings which is pretty good considering it is not a gaming laptop. I’d definitely recommend this for anyone that’s looking for a new laptop that competes with other hybrid laptops well and I think this one has the edge!

HP put a lot of efforf into this one!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really think HP is trying to make this really catch on. The design is genius and the implementation is pretty darn good. Feel/Look: Very high end feel to this laptop. It is very comfortable to type on and it is very premium looking. The leather they used in this product isn't cheap leather. Display: Very nice and bright display. Good for indoors. Can you use it outside, probably. It's close to 300 knits so that's pretty good. Performance: XPS, MacBook Air, Pixelbook, and other ultra books are using the same type of Y series processors. The i7 is plenty snappy and fast for everything but gaming and very gpu intensive video editing. I will edit this review in 30 days and add more =)

This is one beautiful laptop!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have to say that this is the most beautiful laptop I have ever seen and I am partial towards MacBooks. The reason I love the look of this notebook is because it doesn't look like a notebook, it looks like a handsome leather portfolio case. If I walked down the street with it under my arm, no one would suspect it was a full blown 8th generation i7 touchscreen laptop. The fact that it is a 2-in-1 makes it very versatile to use. The screen moves from a standard laptop screen position to a media viewing position to a tablet position very easily. Speaking of tablet, it comes with a 2 button pen stylus that seems to be very accurate. the pen attaches to the side of the notebook in a leather loop and comes with additional nibs. The keyboard is illuminated making it easy to see the black keyboard in dim light. The battery charges very quickly but I haven't drained the battery down enough to see how long it takes to do a full charge from empty. There are 3 USB-C ports that can be used for charging, flash drives, external hard drives etc. as well as a headphone jack. It came with a USB-A to USB-C adapter so I could use older drives or peripherals such as microphones. This model came with 8Gb of RAM and a 256Gb SSD which seems pretty fast. The screen is 1920x1080 and is extremely bright. The sound is pretty good as well as the sound fires upward from the bar above the keyboard which is where the heat emanates from as well. Even when the notebook is in tablet mode, the sound and heat comes out the side of the fold since the screen folds over with a gap between itself and the keyboard. It of course came with a fairly small USB-C charger. The model I got doesn't have LTE capability but from what I read HP makes a model that can accept a SIM card but that would mean an additional monthly cell line. When I need, I can always use my iPhone as a portable hot spot. I can't wait to show it off at my camera club and my computer user group as well.
