works great as hoped and expected

Had a SIIG model that worked reasonably well in Windows 7, but still didn't always show up in Device Manager properly. But, once I upgraded to Windows 10, it almost never was recognized, and had to unplug and plug in again several times to get it to work when it would (and is not recognized at all in OS X Sierra). This model, the Insignia one, works great!!! Recognized quickly in both OS X Sierra and also in Windows 10 (via Parallels Desktop 13). Purchased this model over other choices that were considerably more expensive (and more expensive than the SIIG I purchased previously) due to the excellent and positive reviews here. Glad someone sells one of these readers that actually is recognized in Windows 10 and OS X Sierra, and works great in them.

This device is great, I no longer need to have 3 or 4 individual devices because this little gadget does the job of 4 devices.

Worked well for while but stopped reading CF cards

Purchased this item about a year and half ago. Primarily used to read CompactFlash (CF) cards on a daily basis. Worked well until just recently, when it stopped reading the CF cards. Don't know why. Pins look properly aligned. Can't be overly critical considering the price paid. Just wish it would have lasted longer.

    Professionals stay away!

If your only intent with this card reader is to transfer JPGs, you'll probably be fine. But if you're a professional photographer who shoots in RAW (CR3), this reader is GLACIALLY slow and will cause many errors when trying to transfer files. I even returned and got a replacement for mine because I thought I might have just gotten a dud unit and still having the same problem with the second one as well. The weird thing is, I also have the smaller version of this - also sold by Best Buy (NS-DCR30S2K), and it transfers RAW CR3 files lightning fast, but only has slots for SD and MicroSD. I had originally only purchased this one because I also own an older camera that uses CF cards, but it's so insanely slow and buggy with my RAW files from an SD card that I find it unusable.

    Versatile & reliable card reader

I needed a CF card reader for my older Canon 5D, so this seemed like an affordable & readily available solution. Now I use it all the time for CF, SD, and micro SD cards. Having a versatile card reader handy has saved the day a few times!

    Worked great, until it didn't.

Worked great (very limited use) for the first two years I owned it. Used probably 40-50 times. Then, no Sandisk brand sdxc cards would work anymore. Sony Tough brand worked perfectly and I ran a few tests to make sure, but sure enough, NO Sandisk support and the file transfers would stop mid way through specifically with those cards and those cards only. Tried them in a Kingston brand I had purchased a few years back and they worked fine. Very odd issue but an issue nonetheless.

Great Card reader for old cards

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Slowly but surely slots for old cards are disappearing from computers/printers, etc. You need a multi-card reader to read these old cards. This reader includes Compact Flash (CF) which is getting harder to find.

    not well constructed

I have owned the card reader for a year. It functioned well, and I was happy with it. After 1 year the insides of the box broke free and I am unable to plug cards or the usb cord into the box. It has not been abused nor used heavily. Just plugging in occasionally. Before it broke, it worked as expected. I was happy with it.

    This thing is quite awful.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This thing is quite awful. The good: USB 3.0 Works with Mac and Windows The bad: Everything else I'm not sure if it's a bad USB connection, poorly made parts, or something else, but this little guy disconnects ALL. THE. TIME. Sitting on your desk while transferring photos? Disconnects. Transferring large video files? Disconnects. Plugged it in for the first time? No you didn't. Try again. I have to batch import my files just to avoid this disconnecting in the middle of a large import. The worst part is that sometimes it corrupts the SD card completely, requiring a reformat and losing all of your data. I would use this in a pinch, but even the $8 one I bought elsewhere works far more reliably. My review is based off of 3 completely different computers (Mac & Windows), and many different SD cards.

Another disappointing experience with an external

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I received a non-operating model out of the box. Gave an I/O error after reading my SD. I can see the files but the error pops up the moment you try to transfer. Have seen this error with many memory card readers and honestly do not know if it continues to be an issue with Windows or cables or what but when I had my internal memory card reader everything worked fine. I was stupid and went for aesthetics over functionality and chose to remove my internal memory card reader for a case that has a glass front panel and because of this I can not use any internal 5.5" drives aka optical drives (blu players/dvd players) or memory card readers and so I just continue to whip out my laptop which has a built in sd card reader and bam all is well.

    DO NOT BUY THIS

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I’m a photographer and use a MacBook Air which does not have an SD port. A BestBuy worker told me this would be a great adapter to use. I purchased it and have been using it for maybe 2 months. It started glitching the other day, and I thought it was just the USB chord jiggling around and creating a poor connection. Today, it deleted 200 photos of a precious newborn session that cannot be recovered or replaced. This product would not have received 1 Star if I could have gone lower. DO NOT BUY IT. Also, I couldn’t be more disappointed in my experiences with BestBuy lately. Their customer service has been horrible. I can’t get a human on the phone and can’t get good advice in store. I guess my business will go to Amazon.

    Just Buy Nicer (Not Twice)

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Bought this card reader because my other broke and I liked the price. It was not worth it. I get an I/O decide error every other time I try and use it. The times it doesn’t give me an I/O error it opens the card and then tells me to insert a card into the card slot I just inserted into. Occasionally, when the stars align, it will read my card, which has prevented me from writing this review for about a year now. But it’s not worth it. There’s no driver downloads to try and no fixes on the internet. Just buy a nicer one.

Not compatible with U3 microSD cards.

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Doesn't function properly with U3 microsd cards. Chokes itself at 22MB/s read and write. Can get a bit more speed from the 'SD' labelled slot, but this is still far from usable. But it does work properly with U1 microsd cards. Both the microsd and SD slots work similarly well and at full speed with them. Also have used the CF slots, and it works properly as well. I'm rating it 1 star for the lack of detail telling us that this device is not U3 compatible.

    Super upsetting

Needed this to pull 2x SD cards worth of images for my portfolio to a MAC. Spent an hour trying to find a decently priced option and landed on this - and it was a TOTAL DUD. Returning it - super upset about it not working at all on 2 computers with 2 different cards, and 2 different usb's. Looked it up on the Insignia site and it's not listed under this serial number, one directs me to a discontinued product... cool! I paid full price for this and it's no longer being made. - SS.

I used this once. Tried to use it again 10 days after the return period ended and the little light wouldn't stay on. pulled the plug out to reconnect it and the little usb 3.0 female jack inside the unit came off. Totally useless. The Insignia stuff is so hit or miss.
