      Hello Walk,

We are really sorry to know that you had a hard time working with our Smart Plug with metering. Usually when there is a stable, strong Wi-Fi connection the setup process is very quick and simple as you just need to follow the steps provided by the Insignia Connect app.

Not sure why so many folks can't seem to follow the instructions. They set up very easily. Here's how, in case you're one of these reviewers that has tried 'for hours' lol. Plug the smartplug in, holding the button down when they are inserted in the outlet. They'll click. After that, go to the insignia app, or homekit, and add device. It'll show up as a new device. Either take a picture of the numeric code on the bottom of smartplug in the app, or type it in if it's at a bad angle for your camera. That's it. It is now ready for use. It's really freaking simple, and they're quite economical compared to their competition (I got them for $20 a piece, looks like the price has increased slightly).

*Using AppleHomeKit, I have about 30 devices setup before hand and I do consider myself an expert in this category.* I bought five of these outlets in pure hope they would have been perfect for my needs, unfortunately they didn't and they will be going back today. First two out of the box setup just fine and didn't have any issues, the second to last unit was not wanting to pair. I had to keep trying different ways to pair this sucker, finally after 25 minuets of messing around I finally got this one to pair. Once they were paired they seem to perform okay, the app is glitchy and seems to lose the switches randomly throughout the day and it doesn't sync the power state often. Now that I have them paired to the App and HomeKit it was time to setup automations, I used most of these for lights and fans including Christmas decorations. Randomly these switches would turn off and back on, I would run my HomeKit log and nothing was telling it to turn off and back on again, so not sure if security is an issue. Wifi range with these is weak at best, you do get what you pay for but the range is very poor, I have a mesh network system and I have fantastic coverage from the garage to my house. The outlet in my garage would lose connection or have serious lag, I just replaced it with a different brand and having no issues with 78% network strength. Lastly the biggest reason I'm returning these is because of lag or network timeout.. With the other switches in my house I can sit and tap to turn on and off all day and make the lights strobe, these Insignia outlets will turn on and off for a few times and then sit powered off, moments later they will catch up and freeze. This became an issue when we would turn a switch on and off quickly by accident causing the outlet to remain on or off. We would need to go back to the switch and wait a few moments to perform the automation again. Cons: 1. WiFi Range 2. Randomly turn on and off 3. Laggy compared to other outlets for the same price 4. Pairing can be an issue for some units 5. App loses outlets throughout the day 6. Very bright light, you cannot turn it off even though the manual says you can Pros: 1. Great price for HomeKit beginners 2. Supported by a large retail brand 3. Energy consumption display 4. App has potential, glad to see Insignia getting into HomeKit

These smart outlets are an excellent value. They are Insignia brand, which is a owned by Best Buy, I'm assuming thats why they can sell them so cheaply. At the time of this review, these were the cheapest smart outlet adaptors I could find. If you're using an iOS device, you don't even need the app for these. Just open the Home app, add accessory, and scan the code on the bottom of the outlet or in the manual.

Easy setup, but inconsistent operationally. I have a VeraPlus Controller plugged into it so I can remotely power-cycle it if it locks up or whatever. I get at least a half-dozen alerts on my S9 phone a day telling me that the Insignia Plug is offline. It actually doesn't shut the power down when I get these alerts. When I do manually want to shut if off remotely, the app lets me slide the power switch to the "off" position, but it never shuts the power off. The power switch moves back to the "On" position by itself. Most of the time when I happen to look at the device it is flashing green. Other times it stays a solid green. Might be WiFi related as the only connection allowed by this device is on the useless, over-crowded 2.4 GHz band. Maybe some year these manufacturers will realize there's a 5 GHz band available too

This device was more fussy when it came to setting it up. Once it was set up it sometimes disconnected itself. No, wasn’t the wifi cause different brands of smart plugs in the same room would keep working.

I've used many different smart home products (tons of Hue lights, several different smart plugs, and a thermostat), and this has been one of the most finicky to get set up and use. Getting it set up was an ordeal in ways I can't even remember enough to explain, but the associated app you're supposed to use was no good, and I even had trouble setting up through HomeKit on one device, which usually doesn't happen. Once I got past those initial hurdles, it seems to mostly work now (turning on and off via iOS Control Center and some connected Hue switches, that is), but sometimes it's slow to respond. Maybe still worth it if you find it at a really good price, but if you want something super reliable, I would try another product.

Constant connectivity issues. I have to delete the plug from the app then go through the set up process again and again. It is a really easy set up process and when it stays connected it works great but due to the fact that I have to "set it up" every other week is a bit tiring. I am returning this and trying a different brand. Not worth the hassle.
