Buggy Software limits quality hardware
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my third generation, robotic, vacuum cleaner, and while the hardware has improved, the software is quite limited and buggy. The set up of the unit is quite easy although one page of instructions was missing from the box. Once set up, I did have some trouble connecting, despite, excellent local Wi-Fi signal. I attempted to map the house, but it was incomplete. I moved the base and deleted the map and started again. Despite running the mapping software, multiple times, I would get intermittent errors telling me to restart the unit. This could not be done remotely, even though it was fully charged and connected. Eventually, I was able to get a fairly good map after two days of trying, and multiple runs. The application attempts to divide your house and name rooms. There is an editing tool, which crashed the application multiple times on my fully updated iPhone. The software is overall disappointing. The function mopping and vacuum is quite good for a robotic vacuum. The beating mechanism appears to be silicone and did not have any problems with fiber obstructing the rotating mechanism. The mopping pad is small, but attaches to an arm arm, which extends out only when needed. Robot has a small tank which is refilled from a larger tank in the base unit. I am hopeful that future software updates will improve the function. In my experience due to the complexity, these units require a good bit of effort to function well for your needs. Hopefully, as the bugs are worked out, this will become a low maintenance robotic vacuum.

It cleans well (so you don't have to!)
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. With self-emptying technology, room-mapping, and automated scheduling, the latest Roomba j9+ from iRobot is truly a "set it and forget it" cleaning machine. Program it to do a cleaning job, whether it be for carpet vacuuming or hardwood floor mopping, and watch as it adapts and learns how to navigate your living space. Over time, the Roomba j9+ will become an invaluable addition to your home. One thing that stands out when compared to other robot vacuums and even to previous editions of iRobot Roombas is how quiet the j9+ is. The noisiest part of this device is when the base station is cleaning out the Roomba or when it is refilling the water bin. Otherwise, it is hardly noticeable as it roams around, tackling different surfaces and making automatic adjustments to the cleaning job. The charging base itself isn't an eyesore, with a dark black body and a brown wood-colored top surface that doubles as a side table if you desire. In my living space, the base station sits in the living room and has access to a dining area and kitchen. The surfaces vary among a high pile rug, low pile rug, wood flooring, and tile, but the j9+ addresses each surface as it rolls over it. This device has both vacuum and mopping capabilities, and it interchanges between these two types of jobs seamlessly based on the surface or the job you've inputted for it on the iRobot app. For the most part, cleaning jobs have been "out of sight, out of mind." Once a job is started or a scheduled one begins, the j9+ performs it well, and when completed, I get a notification on the app along with some interesting job notes like updated room maps and statistics like cleaning time, dirt events, and cleaning area size. The only times you really need to pay much attention to it is if you get an error message from when it sucks up something big by accident (like a towel on the floor, big Lego pieces, etc.), or when you need to empty out the dirt bin in the base or refill the water bin. It really is a robot for the home! The device maps the layout of its entire cleaning surface; for the first few jobs, the Roomba will experience the back and forth, trial and error business of rolling through areas multiple times while it gets to know your rooms. It will sense objects or stairs in front of it and learn move around and away from those areas over time. For example, by the third time through my living room and kitchen area, the Roomba was going edge to edge and navigating tight corners without having to bump into walls or backtracking too much over already clean areas. And the map is constantly being populated and updated, tracking the areas appropriate for mopping or pointing out high focus cleaning areas where the Roomba noticed it was working harder. Most jobs last around under an hour, but you can send the Roomba home to its base whenever you like. The j9+ knows when it needs to empty its dirt bin, refill its water bin, or recharge its battery to truly leave the cleaning to itself and allow you to worry about literally anything else. And in all honesty, isn't this the reason you got a robot vacuum in the first place? The iRobot Roomba j9+ is truly a cleaning luxury for any household, and the time it saves you from doing the mundane job of vacuuming is its own reward. Highly, highly recommended.

Best Combo Out There
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is by far the best Roomba combo out. The iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ is more than a triple threat. With a high suction vacuum, smart scrub mop, self empty bin, and self refill mop it's a quadruple threat. What makes this a must have in my house is the Clean Base. The convenience of not having to empty the vacuum bin is helpful but auto refilling the mop seals the deal. My prior combo I hardly used the mop because of how small the cleaner container was. The j9+'s 30 day cleaner supply makes running this combo a cinch. The Roomba backs itself into the base to refill. It will do this automatically or via a button on the app. The bigger base doesn't look too bad either. They added some faux wood look to the top but it didn't really need it being all black. It's pretty inconspicuous. Vacuum wise this runs like all the rest. I miss the D shaped chassis of the S9+. I think this one misses some spots with the rollers in-between the tires and the edge brush will sometimes fling debris too far causing the vacuum to miss it. However the suction power makes up for a lot. This picked up significantly more dirt running after my j7. It does a good job at noticing different floor types so it's not mopping carpet. I haven't noticed any difference with the claims that it detects and responds to higher trafficked areas. Obstacle detection is good so far. It hasn't vacuumed up anything that it shouldn't of. The review of the pictured obstructions is helpful too. Warning that the self empty is pretty loud. This is good for getting everything out of the robot but can be startling. With the mop I like to be able to adjust the amount of water but I wish the ultra setting released more liquid. The smart scrub with pressure is noticeably better than my prior mop. I didn't notice it scrubbing any areas that really needed it though. So any sensors for that didn't seem to work on my floor. It ran across dried spaghetti sauce and hot chocolate and cleaned those up. Kool-aid didn't seem to come up but I've noticed that some messes take a couple runs. I didn't have any spots that smeared but I did have tougher spots that didn't come up even with the smart scrub. So it's not a perfect system but it helps tidy somethings up. You'll still have to get some elbow grease in there to get really clean floors. There is sometimes a grinding noise and I'm not sure if that's the sound of it applying pressure or not. Overall I like iRobot products especially because the app and operating system are always improving and getting smarter. I like that this is all included in purchase and the app is one of the better one's I've used. It really helps out that you can set up clean zones like in front of the fridge or stove so that you can easily target those areas that need mopped the most. I'd recommend this combo because of the amount of convenience the Clean Base provides.

Set it and forget it Vacuum
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Out of the box, the setup process on this vacuum was a little longer than I'm used to but was still easy. The connecting to the phone and Wi-Fi was no problem, there was just a lengthy update to the vacuum and then for the docking station. The docking station, by the way, is convenient with a place to store the extra bags, mop, and brushes. I always used to forget where I put our extras. Once the vacuum was ready to go it did its thing exploring and mapping the house. The mapping was spot on and I just had to adjust where the living room started vs the dining room. It correctly recorded what was tile and what was carpet, but it just had it as all one room. So with the app I created the divider so we can now instruct it to do a particular room. While cleaning, the robot was perfect in detecting objects and knowing when to mop or vacuum. When its time to mop, the robot automatically lifts up the arm and drops the pad onto the floor. It has done that perfectly without any mistakes. This model does have a light on the front with he camera so I think that helps in many ways compared to older models. The cleaning itself has been great. We are very satisfied with the job its done with both the carpet and the mop on the tile floor. So far we have only used water for the mop, but there are approved solutions you can use as well. The charge also seems adequate on the vacuum as its able to complete our living room, kitchen and dining room on one charge. Overall, this is a great upgrade for us over previous models in both accuracy and cleaning and we couldn't be happier.

You can’t live without it and you didn’t even know
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the absolute best investment you can make for your home! The first step is downloading the app, and setting up your account, which takes a few minutes at most. Once you download the app, you set a schedule for cleaning - and that’s it. The iRobot will vacuum under tables, under furniture, under every crevice. It will map out each room of your house, and then give you the option to modify its map. It can recognize changes in the house, and will notify you of any changes. The mopping feature is terrific as well - my floors have never been so clean! In addition to cleaning one floor, you can set the iRobot to clean multiple floors. All you need to do is bring it to the second floor, allow it to map the level out, and program a time! It easily delineates between carpet vs wood/tile, so no need to worry. It smoothly rides over room breaks, and will avoid objects. As a pet owner (with three dogs and two cats), it definitely keeps our home clean. I would absolutely recommend buying this!

Does the Cleaning That I Don't Want to Do!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I tried a Roomba over a decade ago, a few years after they first came out and were the must have thing. I was not impressed. There was no “smart” to the robot at all. It would zig-zag back and forth, chewing up cords under furniture, and hitting literally everything until it finally needed a charge, at which point it would stop vacuuming and roam the floor for 20 minutes trying to dock until it simply died. I gave up on robotic vacuums entirely and just did things myself. However, I’m tired of vacuuming and especially mopping my floors and decided to give it another try with the Roomba j9+. After getting it all set up and having used it a few times I’m now floored (pun intended) by what it can do and excited at the amount of time and energy that I will be saving. First off, it created a map of my first floor and I was shocked at how accurate it was. It even correctly labeled all the rooms: living room, kitchen, dining room, office, and hallways. I didn’t give it any hints, that was impressive. When it leaves the base station, it doesn’t just zig-zag until it hits a wall, it seems to have a plan. The base is large and despite iRobot’s attempts to make it look appealing is still unsightly. Therefore, I placed it in an area that is a bit hidden and mostly out of sight. I was expecting the Roomba not to be able to find its home and I’d end up finding it dead somewhere along the floor, but the little guy impressed me again. When it needs to go home it, it turns off the vacuum and mop, and navigates from one room to another, and all the way around the table and chairs to get back to the dock. It dumps its dirt, refills the water, charges if needed, then navigates back and resumes what it was doing. It doesn’t ask me for anything during a cleaning session. On my first floor it takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete. The app says it’s cleaning around 700 sq ft during that time. The navigation capabilities of the j9+ are superb. It can discover and find new rooms on its own, constantly updating the map as it explores where it can and can’t go. My old Roomba from back in the day had sensors that I had to buy and place in areas that were no clean zones. They were unsightly, toyed with by the kids and ultimately were unreliable. With the mapping features this new model has it can go and clean a specific room and I can easily add “keep out” or “no mop” zones on the map. I don’t have any carpet or rugs downstairs, but I can see how the no mop zone feature would be handy if you had an area rug that you wanted to be sure didn’t get wet. It does an excellent job of avoiding objects and after a cleaning session will ask me to help train it in what to do next time it encounters the same object. It uses the front camera to show you actual pictures of the obstructions it found. The iRobot app is very good. I can set cleaning schedules, see the history of cleanings, and even see how much life the brushes, filters, and mop pads have left. The mop pads are washable but still need to be replaced at some point. Unfortunately the filters do not appear to be washable, they need to be replaced with every 50 hours or so of use. Also will need to buy dirt disposal bags for the base station. I don't know how often those need to be replaced. It hasn't asked me to replace one yet after a week of use. The actual cleaning performance is not as good as a full-size vacuum and it’s not going to mop as well as you can by hand or even with some other vacuum mops on the market. It pushes pieces of candy wrappers around and long pieces of grass the dog brought in don’t get sucked up. (I’m way behind on mowing – need a robotic mower). The mopping is a very light mopping. However, having run the Roomba every couple of days, without me lifting a finger I’m able to maintain cleaner floors overall because I don’t have time to clean the floors myself as often as the robot can. That time and effort saved is the Roomba’s greatest strength. Pros: -Automatically Empties Itself -Excellent Mapping and Navigation -Great AI Object Avoidance -Refills Mop Solution -Gets Into Hard-to-Reach Places -Automatically Self-Charges -Saves Time by Vacuuming and Mopping Simultaneously -Feature Rich App Cons: -Not a deep cleaner -Base Unit Takes a Lot of Space -Need to budget for bags, brushes, filters, pads Overall – The Roomba Combo j9+ does a great job of keeping my floors clean without me lifting a finger. The latest model is smarter than it has ever been and tries to do as much as possible without burdening its owner. I am impressed with what Roomba’s flagship model offers. All I need now is someone to create a robot that cleans toilets and sinks automatically!

Rise of the Robot Vacuums!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ continues a strong tradition from iRobot and it's Roomba line of products. Without a doubt, this is the best Roomba that I've owned (and I've had several over the years). Setup is a breeze. Plug in the base, download the app, connect the Roomba to the app, and prepare to get a cleaner house. Now, already having Roomba's in my house, I was able to simply transfer my existing home map to the j9+. so that it did not need to learn room layouts, furniture, etc. was. That was a time savings so that I could just focus on how well this unit cleaned. In my home, the main floor, which is where I use this Roomba, is entirely hardwood floors, making this the perfect Roomba for my setup. This unit, as a combo unit, has the ability to vacuum, mop, or vacuum and mop during each job. I love the fact that I can choose to vacuum and mop the kitchen and family room (more heavy traffic), and simply vacuum the living room. You can also choose multiple passes and now, with the latest software, can choose to do a deep cleaning mode, where it will go back and forth over areas with the mop, basically scrubbing some tougher marks. This seems to work well for sitckier small messes, but I wouldn't say it is necessarily a replacement for getting on your hands and knees to scrub out a spot. It does work surprisingly well for what it is. The best thing about the unit, in my opinion, is that the j9+ will return to it's base to refill the mopping tank when it runs low. For someone in my situation, where the entire floor is hard flooring, this is great. It refills the tank, and then continues where it left off. With my previous unit, the j7+ combo, I would get notifications that it ran out of liquid, sometimes after 2-3 rooms. That's fine when I'm at home, but now I don't need to be around. The refill tank is quite large too. I use the recommended Bona floor cleaner, which comes in 1 gallon bottles, and I'd say the tank holds about a half gallon of liquid, which will last quite a while between needing to be refilled. On the app, it will indicate how much liquid is left in the unit and in the refill tank, so you can see when it is getting time to refill the unit. The unit will also empty trash it's collected on it's run into the vacuum bag automatically. No need to run to the trash can to empty the unit each time. Suction on this unit seems to be really strong too, stronger than my previous units, in my experience. Is this unit for everyone? Probably not. If most of your home or floor is carpeted, for example, this unit is overkill. But if much of your floor is hard flooring, this is a great unit and will help to keep your home clean. All of the advanced features, like obstacle detection, room mapping, clean and keep out zones, scheduling, etc are all accessible via the app. The j9+ will detect and avoid falling down steps. Overall, this is an impressive little robot.

Sweet Robot Vacuum. Works well with dog hair.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ is an absolute beast for my vacuuming needs. I have 4 dogs and they all shed like crazy. Over the past week I have watched this Roomba vacuum learn the layout of the house and keep my floors which are all hardwood throughout free of dog hair which is usually floating around freely on the floors. This will save me time and effort on keeping this dog hair in check. Set Up: This was super simple and easy to follow the setup instructions. Outside of the software update, I had this setup in 5 to 10 minutes. Everything is ready to go when you remove the contents from the box. The only thing not attached was the mop head but that just clicks into place very simply. You have to download the Roomba app from your particular app store. I had to create an account and then I was ready to go. The app has all the settings you need for the Roomba. You can set schedules, even set it to clean when it detects you've left the house. You can check the battery level and water level for the mopping feature in the app as well. You can set it to run a mapping run or vacuum/mop whenever you want. I've left it on its default schedule of 9 am Mon Wed Fri and I've been happy with that so far. Base Station: This is where your Roomba will return to, empty its bin and refill its mopping tank. It doesn't look ungodly to me and has a nice wood finish on top making it almost an accent piece to the house. Its easy to change the dirt bag and the mop water. Everything is plug and play for the most part, they've taken the thinking part out of this. Cleaning: Really impressed with the cleaning and hair pick up this vacuum achieves. I have quite a few obstacles in the house and this mapped it out perfectly. This year instead of a LiDAR sensor it uses a camera to map out the house. But I feel it does an excellent job as long as it's daylight or you have lights on in the house. With a LiDAR sensor that didn't matter...oh well. The mopping feature is really cool and does a really good job keeping little stains and other messes cleaned up well. I love the swing arm that moves and comes down to mop and then retracts up and out of the way when its not in use. Very Cool!! If I were to have one complaint, it would be that it's loud, Like IMO really loud. Forget watching TV while this thing is going for sure LOL. But I do understand that it needs a lot of suction so I can overlook the loudness and the 9am schedule means Im at work. Summery: I feel that each year these smart robot vacuums get smarter and smarter, although I don't understand the decision to get rid of the LiDAR on this unit I think it still performs well for my needs.
