Good to Average security camera

The Kangaroo Indoor/Outdoor security camera is an average security camera. It was fairly easy to setup. During the setup process the camera will provide a voice prompt alerting you that the device is ready to pair. It will keep saying this voice prompt over and over again until it gets to the end of the setup process with a voice prompt letting you know that the device setup was successful. This is a nice touch, but the volume of the voice prompt is quite loud. I wish they allowed you to turn the volume down or disabling the voice prompt using the app during the setup process. The app will display a QR code on your phone, which you have to use aim the security camera at your phone. During the rest of the setup process they try to get you to subscribe to their subscription plan. I was able to swipe the screen to the left to display the basic plan with no cost. The basic plan allows just 12 seconds of recording with a sleep delay of 5 minutes between recorded motion. It only keeps footage for 24 hours. That’s enough for me since I won’t be using it that much. When I first setup the camera it took 15-20 seconds for the live video feed to appear. I was not pleased with that long of delay at all. After doing a factory reset and starting over, the live feed time is now around 4-5 seconds. The video recording quality is decent, but it appears a bit distorted as though it’s using a fish-eye lens. The camera has an attached USB-A cable and included USB charging brick. I like this setup because it allows you to connect the camera to a USB Battery Bank, without having to plug it into a wall outlet. This allows me to move my camera anywhere and mount it anywhere. I can place the battery bank near it and plug it into the battery bank for power. It supports Alexa and Google. I paired it with Alexa, but the features are very lacking. You can only use Alexa to arm or disarm the system. It doesn’t allow you to view a live video feed like other security cameras can do. Overall, it’s a decent security camera, but there are better options out there with more features.

Very affordable indoor/outdoor wired 1080p security camera. The camera is very compact and mobile. It also connects to the network via wireless, but unfortunately, it must be connected to a power outlet to use the camera. I felt this limited the security camera's use since I placed it in areas with no close power source (my backyard). I, however, did like the magnet feature for mounting. I found this very useful when mounting on metal.
Unfortunately, you'll have to purchase their service options to take advantage of all the features. I did find their in-app marketing annoying as it constantly tried to upsell me. It also asked for a lot of my information. I was not too fond of that. Also, I wouldn't say I liked the sound quality of the camera. The motion detection notifications were okay but, after a while, became annoying as well. Finally, the 1080p video quality was a nice touch and is clear, not pixeled. I thought it was great for the price tag. Overall, I thought it was a decent camera, but the upsell to use the basic features made me not recommend the camera.

This camera is small i.e. 2x2x2 inch cube. It utilizes a magnetic plate for mounting, or you can hang the camera on a screw. It is an indoor or outdoor camera and does have color night vision which is a nice spec for this lower priced security camera. I tested the night vision and it looks pretty good although not as clear as daytime vision.
The installation is very simple, just follow the steps in the Kangaroo Security app. You will have to create an account before you can actually install the device. I found the instructions very well written and succinct.
You can store data locally on an SD card which is not provided, or you can pay for cloud storage. The documentation has a conflict in that at one point it says the ‘Basic Level’ comes with 24 hours of cloud storage. Read further and it says cloud storage is only available for a monthly or yearly fee. When I checked the app for cloud storage, I did find my videos, so it does seem the 24 hours of cloud storage is indeed provided. Some features are not available unless you do pay for a subscription. A few of these are two-way communication, person detection and an option for the system to contact police when you fail to dismiss motion alerts.
The power is supplied via a 5 volt USB connector that does have a very nice waterproof connector system. The data is over WiFi, utilizing a 2.4 GHz bandwidth. Since 2.4 GHz has a longer distance than 5 GHz, this is a smart design point. When I first installed the device I set my cell phone to a 2.4 GHz connection. After installation I noticed it doesn’t matter if the cell phone is on a 2.4 or a 5 GHz connection.
This unit could become part of a more extensive Kangaroo home security system if you opted for additional devices such as doorbell cameras, etc.
The app does include (for me an annoying option) an icon to contact Progressive Insurance to get insurance quotes – not sure this is should be a feature of the Kangaroo camera options.
I did notice the built-in siren works very well and there is an option to set a choice of a warning command - but this would require a paid subscription.
All in all for the price point, this is a very nice camera with some fine specifications. It is very smple to install. I can recommend it.

A camera to keep an eye in the house

I think that the Kangaroo - Indoor/Outdoor Wired 1080p Security Camera sits in the average range of cameras that are available in the market right now. Nothing too bad but there is no a guau factor, in some cases, the only guau is the number of times that the app is trying to sell me insurance.
What I like about the camera:
.-Small size and quite compact is great. This keeps it in a discreet place in the house and the wire can be directly connected to the power behind the cabinet.
.- Very easy first connection and setup. Install the camera is a easy as downloading the kangaroo app and using your Bluetooth and home wireless to connect it to the internet and to install the last firmware.
.- While most of the cameras you can buy additional storage for your images. At least the camera includes a month of images.
What is less interesting:
.- There is almost no single way of adjusting most of the camera settings, areas of priority, or movement sensitivity. All you can have is what is there.
.- This camera seems always to be a small piece of a full security system that includes other security options and a full insurance program. Far from creating trust, I see that will not be my primary eye in the house.
It’s ok.

Good indoor/ bright light camera

I have a Kangaroo home security system, so I was very excited to try this indoor/outdoor camera. If I could replace my current cameras with the Kangaroo cameras, it would stream line my home security. Unfortunately, while this works fine for indoors and bright light, the outdoor and low light performance leaves a lot to be desired.
The indoor and daytime outdoor image quality is really good for a camera at this price point. Low-light video is noisy and grainy. I could see someone was outside, but couldn't really distinguish enough facial features to make an identification if it was needed.
My biggest complaint is with motion detection. As of now, there's no way to get notification for certain types of motion (i.e, person or vehicle). The software just detects motion and sends all notifications through the app. As an example, I had this set up in my side yard, which is close to my neighbor (I live in a town home community) and every time she turned on a light, the Kangaroo cam would detect it as motion and I would receive a notification. I've gone through the settings hoping I'm missing something, but the software (as of now) doesn't seem to support person, pet, or vehicle detection which most cameras in the price range already do.
For now, I'm using this as an indoor camera to keep an eye on my home when I'm away. Hopefully a future software update can add better motion detection settings. Until then, if you're looking for a camera wth more robust motion detection options, I would skip this for now.

Subscription needed for most features

I had an opportunity to try the Kangaroo Indoor + Outdoor Cam over the last week or so. I don’t have any other Kangaroo devices, so first I had to install the Kangaroo Security app on my phone. Getting connected to the Wifi network (2.4GHz only) was pretty straight forward. The included USB-A to micro-USB cable is a good length and pretty standard if you need to get a longer one or an extension. Most apps and services nowadays use the “Cloud” and require you to create an account, Kangaroo is no exception. I was hoping that since it also has local memory storage, I could get away with not having to create yet another cloud account, wishful thinking. Once you get thru all of the above steps and the many ads for security and premium subscription services, you can finally get access to the Live feed which was a bit choppy at times even though it was installed not far from the WiFi router and otherwise I can get over 200Mbps speeds on other devices in the same room. The camera is quite a small footprint and comes with all the hardware you need to wall-mount it or use it as a stand. It is weather-proof, so no problem installing it outdoors. Sound quality was very poor, with a lot of background noise and breaking up as if it didn't have enough bandwidth which is not the case. Most features are only available with the paid subscriptions - Cam Protect for $24/year or Complete Protect for $99/year. Despite its initial relatively low cost, you have to take into account the subscription cost. Personally I will not pay into the Kangaroo security ecosystem as I have had much better experience with other low-cost cameras that offer the majority of their features for free and only extended cloud storage for additional subscription cost.

The kangaroo indoor-outdoor cam has an excellent build. It was straightforward to set up using the kangaroo mobile app. It was up and going in no time.
Once it was going, I noticed that I had the power off the camera in-app and turn it back on to give me a live feed, although it said it was going live. After reading a little more literature, I found that most of the camera's features were inactive unless you had an upgraded premium plan. It's a time of this review I do not have. I played with it, and I saw that it had excellent night vision that was in color. The siren function that I triggered myself. I don't know. It just seemed like it should have come with a six-month or three-month trial. To see the camera before, you must jump in to get a premium package. I have used the kangaroo doorbell for years now, and I do have a plan on that one, but it's just a porch protection thing. It includes everything you need to mount it and the wires. It is a wired camera. But it's not offering enough functionality without the paid program.

Good Inexpensive Solution

This camera is best for Live views or temporary event views
that are stored on the cloud, especially if you want “Free”
operation. You can unlock more features with a “paid”
upgraded subscription! Less than $24.00/year or more
$$$ for more features.
Initial set up was easy. Display is color and has day/night mode.
I am only able to view in portrait mode, no landscape.
I am also not able to zoom images. I could not locate a
User manual, so not sure if zoom & landscape are add-ons.
Cloud images are locked after 24 hours and are only
accessible with a subscription.
The camera will detect all motions w/out subscription, can
tweak with a subscription. The clarity is good 1080p.
Power is wired and connection is WiFi so I can view activity
from my work place with the app. Alerts are good. I have had other
WiFi cameras that constantly go off line. So far this has
provided a consistent connection. Connection is 2.4GHz only
so it is a little laggy at times. Camera is mountable.
To sum things up: Good inexpensive solution for basic
Image capturing or can upgrade for more features. The only
draw back is the 2.4GHz connection when most devices
these days are at AC/AX wifi speeds.

Camera is small and with a unique adjustable base and integrated mount. Comes with a 2 part power cord with a rubber shield for moisture protection. Set up was fairly simple with the camera talking and helping you through the set up which worked on the 1st try. Reminded me of the talking cars of years ago. Once set up, I had issues with the camera freezing and constantly refreshing. Linked with an iPhone 13 and Samsung Android, all recent models. I tried many ways to fix the issue, as when it did work, the image was clear and bright. I will continue trouble shooting. The app has push notifications to notify you of sounds and motion from the camera when armed. The app also has an interesting option of providing coverage for stolen packages, home damage due to theft, water, fire and smoke. I believe this is offered through Progressive. I thought this was a nice touch. The camera has 2 way sound so you can listen and communicate back to anyone around the camera. the sound is fairly good.

Discreet Peace of Mind With a Caveat

I will start out by saying the hardware is fantastic for the price! Build quality is decent especially for this level of investment. The video quality is great and it has good visuals both inside (where I currently have it), and outside as well. Then in comes the user experience and kind of blows it unfortunately. The app itself is not terrible and has no major issues. It works fine for what the camera is and advertises to do. The big problem is that the typical consumer getting a camera in this price range is really not looking to pay for a monthly subscription, and the Kangaroo makes it almost impossible to not do that. Many features are locked behind a paywall and only accessible in the premium plan. If you are looking to get a decent and affordable camera and do not mind paying a monthly fee to use the camera to its fullest, or being annoyed constantly to upgrade to a paid premium plan then the Kangaroo will do just fine for you. If you are looking to pay for a camera and only use it for live viewing, or recording to a local storage solution then you should likely look elsewhere.

I'll just get right into it. After installing the necessary Kangaroo Security app, even before I finished the initial set-up process, going step-by-step, filling out the required info, etc. I was presented with an "Ad." Way to push the consumer to sign up for additional services! Not cool. And not the kind of 'first impression' I'm used to when activating any new electronic device. What was the additional service? Progressive insurance. Please, please allow me to finish setting up this new security camera before advertising this stuff.
It does not matter to me that when apps include ads, that is one way the product brand is able to keep the price lower. We have to be inundated by that kind of thing everyday in so much of what we "consume." This just turns me off and makes the whole experience 'feel' "cheap," like a sales pitch everytime you access the required app.
On the "plus side" - the power cord is plenty long, with a standard USB on one end which plugs into the included outlet cube, and a micro-USB on the other end which plugs into the connector of the short cable coming out from the camera itself. So if you want or need to, you could swap out and use a shorter or longer power cord with those particular end plugs, instead of the cord which came with the device.
Another 'good thing' about this Kangaroo Security Camera is its small, unobtrusive, size. It IS cute. And would be easily hidden up in the corner of a roof or ceiling, or tucked within some carefully placed foilage. An additional use for this tiny camera would be to keep tabs on your pets while away from home.
Picture quality is adequate, though the video was sluggish from time to time. (my internet service and home network devices were not the issue)
Something else worth mentioning is that the camera gets really warm even just sitting there, with the power off.
No. I do not recommend. Even at its inexpensive cost, there are other far better options to choose from.

This is my review for the Kangaroo - Indoor/Outdoor Wired 1080p Security Camera. This camera is very sleek, good packaging, great form factor, easy set up but is held back by a subscription plan that simply should just be less greedy. You're essentially unable to use all the settings/options provided via the app due to what is essentially a pay wall. I opted for the basic plan since it's free. Being the basic plan you're extremely limited by what you can capture and how you can capture objects on the camera. I had 2 deliveries while the camera was operating. If there's a sound or some other interruption, the camera is supposed to capture this happening in real time. I'm not sure if it was the app or the camera but neither of the deliveries were captured on camera. This camera is basically just something just sitting at a window serving no actual purpose at this point. There are far better offerings for security cameras at this time. I cannot recommend this product for purchase.

I've had other more expensive cameras than the kangaroo, The kangaroo does what the others do more than some, yes it does have the option for a paid subscription that just makes it better in my opinion, Set-up is very easy and yes it does ask for quite a bit of information, but who cares I have nothing to hide, but overall the kangaroo is the best indoor, outdoor security camera I have used to date, I have a total of 7.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone that wants to set and forget (unless there's a breaking). After all the system needs to be working ALL of the time! If you are busy and quickly look at the live view, everything looks like it is working. But IT'S NOT ALWAYS!! after no notifications for some time it's when you realize something is wrong. Live Video is working but recording nothing!
