An awful device... Android Auto Fails, Voice Fails

This head unit is awful. The voice controls are awful. Google Voice rarely gets it right. It's so hard to send text messages, hangouts messages, etc. I had this professionally installed. I had the MIC moved. It helped but still awful. It gets half the words, it fails to act on commands, it then just clocks/spins and does nothing. The phone book is crazy nuts to. there is no customizations. Kenwood support also stinks. This unit has satellite and the Maestro controls for engine gages and steering wheel control. When in satellite, even though it allows for 20 presets, only 5 works. Per kenwood, working as designed. UGH. Almost none of the kenwood apps actually work either. I had first a Galaxy Note 4 and now a Galaxy S7. Same results. Sound quality is nice, but that's about all. FM reception too, stinks. My old sony got 60 miles for most Madison radio channels. This thing... starts cutting out at about 35 - 40 miles. I sooo wish i went with a different unit. I LOVE BB installers! They are awesome. Car is a 2015 Limited. Also installed were all new speakers and an amplified sub in the trunk. Rear camera works great. Sound is good. Display fades out in sunlight too. So disappointed. And so expensive when all is said and done as there are so many "added" expenses in order to get this installed properly. I don't understand the higher reviews. Thanks

Dealing with a Black Friday "deal"

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The Kenwood DDX9703S was a great deal for Black Friday. But there are a few warnings you should have going in. "SiriusXM Ready" means you'll have to pay an extra $50-70 for a SiriusXM tuner to be added on. "Apple CarPlay Ready" means that you will need to use a lightning/USB cable to actually be able to use CarPlay… or, spend another $100 for Kenwood's WiFi dongle… in order to connect your iPhone to the DDX9703S. Suddenly that "deal" doesn't seem as good. The user interface for the unit is a bit clunky. In most areas the text is way too big, so song titles run off the screen. Whereas if some common sense had been used, the design could be much better. All in all, what I felt would be a step up is more like a step sideways. Until I'm ready to pony up more money to improve the interface.

    Long lasting smart radio

It's been a really good radio these past 6 years can't say anything bad about it besides just the glare. When I didn't have tint in my truck other than that super awesome. No wireless Android auto or carplay but there's ways around that.

The warning message is very annoying

I agree the stereo unit functionality is good but if I had known I was going to have to physically acknowledge a warning message telling me to pay attention to my driving every single time I start my vehicle, I would have not bought this unit. I will not recommend this to my friends either. What if every other device used in your vehicle does the same thing? Also with the apple play, some siri functionality has been purposely limited. KENWOOD, sell me a product and let ME decide how to use it.

    Clock reset

Overall I am pleased with this receiver... However, when the key is turned off the clock always resets to factory setting. The presets for radio are kept so not sure why. Installer doesn't know why either

Need Older Cellphone to get full features

    Posted .

This Kenwood device requires a cellphone that supports HDMI, MHL, or Slimport Video standard in order to get full use out of it. Any Android phone can connect via USB and get basic functions like Google Maps with voice commands. But screen sharing via the Kenwood Mobile App isn't possible without a phone that supports those video standards, and those phones are hard to find. The Kenwood has 2 cable connections, 1 USB and 1 HDMI. The HDMI is what you need for screen sharing. I don't recommend buying this unless your phone supports 1 of the 3 standards I listed. On the good side, voice commands work well and Android Auto works fine but has limited features compared to Waze which is available via the Kenwood mobile app screen sharing...if you have the right phone.

    Could Not Be More Disappointed

I was really fired up about getting an in dash system. With all the extra gear required for installation and the addition of a backup camera to replace the factory model, I ended up paying almost $900. When I came to pick up my car, my Android phone kept getting an error message trying to connect. After spending an hour and a half with the installer trying to fix it, it still didn't work. The installer is a really nice kid, but he couldn't make the stereo I just paid $900 for function. I tried to call my girlfriend on the speaker phone, and the microphone didn't work. Then I found out, after it was installed, that I needed to install another device to get satellite radio. Not helpful at that point. On the way home, I could get Spotify from my phone via Bluetooth, but it was so quiet I had to turn the volume all the way up. So when I switched from Spotify to FM, I got blasted out of the car. I'm about ready to have them take it out and replace my factory model. But they can't get me back in for several days, so maybe I will have time to chill. I don't know if all of this model is as much of a piece of garbage as this one, but this is pretty much my worst experience at Best Buy.

How is this rated so high?

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

For this price, this unit should be able to view maps and play Bluetooth music or take calls at the same time. How is this rated nearly five stars when maps are not even built in? I guess I could use both these features simultaneously if I give Kenwood another few hundred dollars for an even higher priced car stereo. No thank you. Returning, putting my old stereo back in and getting a Garmin.

    Didn’t last long

After 11 months the radio randomly started tilting on its own, won’t readjust to 0 screen position and won’t release my 3 year old three days grace CD. I wasn’t offered the protection plan on it didn’t even know I could get it but now I sure do. I have to send the radio to kenwoods repair facility so who knows how long I’ll be without one now. Thanks
