    Great stereo!

I drive a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado and my factory stereo lost its ability to eject CDs. I was in the market for a new stereo and decided to check out the selection of my local Best Buy in Conway, Arkansas. I really liked the look and functionality of this Kenwood and the price was great! I checked the reviews and they were pretty good. I bought the stereo from my local Best Buy and had them do the install for me. Cody H. was the installation technician and he did a wonderful job on it. The stereo looks great in my dash and I did not have the issue that some people mentioned about it not being readable in the sunlight. That could be because in my truck the location of the stereo is turned slightly towards the driver's side and perpendicular to the floor instead of angled upward like many cars. At any rate, I can't say enough about this unit. I love the hands-free calling, Bluetooth, USB access, and all the other bells and whistles that comes with it for such a great price. It beats the pants off my factory stereo from 2003. The only functionality I lost was the ability to play cassette tapes. I suppose I'll manage to cope. ;)

    Tired of Sony "quality"

I bought 2 Sony single din CD receivers 14 months ago (model MEX-N5100BT). One for my truck and one for my wife's car. Best Buy installed them both. The receivers in both vehicles just ran the factory speakers, plus we both used Bluetooth for streaming and phone calls. Nothing crazy. After having the Sony head units for 13 months (which was last month), the receiver in my wife's car reset itself to the factory settings. All by itself. I pulled the deck out myself and checked the wiring, and everything was fine. The connections on the faceplate were clean and still shiny. I put the colors and presets back to the way my wife had them, and 2 days later, the receiver reset itself again. And it continues to do so every 2-4 days. 2 days ago, the same thing happened to the receiver in my truck (at the 14 month mark). This isn't a coincidence. This is bad quality. 1 and 2 months out of warranty, the head units are failing....so I am switching back to Kenwood. I have purchased Kenwood head units several times since I was a teenager (I am now 43). I have never had a problem with Kenwood products....I just like to upgrade every few years. I bought the 2 Sony receivers because, at the time, Kenwood didn't offer 5+ band equalizers in their head units in the price range I was looking to stay within. Today, I bought this double din Kenwood and installed it in my truck. This Kenwood receiver has a 13 band equalizer plus a few other sound enhancements....and very flexible crossover points that are separate for front, rear, and subs. I drove around for an hour and a half and made things sound just right. The overall sound seems a tad warmer, because the mid-range is more in control due to the extra few equalizer bands. I have always had an ear for SQ, so the more frequencies to adjust....the better. As far as reliability for the 2 new Kenwood head units....it's to early to tell. But from past experience, I can't say that I have any worries....unless Sony decides to buy out Kenwood. I have been in manufacturing for 25 years, and electronics production for the last 2 years....so I thought it would be good to share my experience with fairly recent Sony car stereos. Last and not least....when I called Sony to tell them that their products were failing just outside of their warranty period (1 year)....I was told to send them both MEX-N5100BT head units back to them on my own dime, and they would repair them on my dime, and I'd have them back in about 4 weeks. I simply said "no thanks" and hung up.

    Great Receiver For The Price

I installed this model in my son's Jeep Patriot, and I am very impressed with the features and the sound. Of course, I paired it with 4 Kicker 6x9 3 way speakers. Don't put cheap speakers with any system! Only thing that I was disappointed with was that this system does not come with the (8) 5mm screws needed to mount it to the bracket. Kenwood includes them with higher priced models, but not this one which doesn't make sense! We're talking about a buck's worth of screws. I had to make a trip to Lowes in the middle of the install just to get the darn screws! Anyway, it's a great stereo, and my son will love the bass response!

    A good basic Radio

I really liked this radio. It was simple and reliable. I did not like how you could not see the clock and song/artist name while using sirius. I ended up upgrading to the Kenwood touch screen with the volume dial on the side which filled all my needs. This radio does have a dimming feature which i liked when driving at night. Note that screen is hard to view during the day which is a hassle because you have to keep adjusting brightness.

I bought this late summer of 2017 to put in an older truck and wanted the BT feature for phone calls. We had iPhone6's at the time. All was great. Sound of the mic was really good, BT worked great, music played and so forth. We used both BT and the USB. Then we upgraded our phones to the 8's and this model no longer support BT connection for the 8's. So, it's half useless now as it's primary purpose was hands free calling. I would have rated it a 5 star until learning they won't support iPhone's beyond 6s. Don't spend your money on this model.

Bought this as a replacement for the factory head unit in an 08 Silverado. The only complaints I have are 1) that the display is way to dim even with the dimmer off and the brightness all the way up regardless of the color you can't see it in the daytime....at all. 2) The receiver is kind of weak and It doesn't pull in signals very well compared to the factory unit.

I bought this for an older car that needed a new head unit. Little did I know that this radio is practically useless during the daytime. The display is hard to read while wearing sunglasses or not. Even if it's just cloudy outside it's still difficult to read. Just not bright enough to be useful during the day. At night, it works just fine. If you have better options, buy something else.

Too Many Bugs and No Support From Kenwood

    Posted .

I installed this stereo in a 2002 Subaru WRX sedan. The fit is a thing of beauty; it looks like it came from the factory, but is much cooler visually than the stock stereo. Connecting to the separately-purchased installation kit's wiring harness was easy; the Kenwood wires' colors matched the colors of the harness wires. Soldering connections is something I recommend because it's the best electrically and avoids future problems. I left the factory speakers and subwoofer in place because they sound good. I loved the radio at first, but things went downhill as I got to know it better. These are the main problems: 1) With "PANDORA" painted on the face of the radio, you would expect Pandora to work well, but it doesn't. It worked fine at first, but soon got stuck in a mode where it only shows "READING", "CONNECT ERROR", or "CHECK DEVICE". I contacted Kenwood about the issue and they pointed the finger at Pandora. I contacted Pandora and they pointed the finger at Kenwood. Since doing a paperclip-assisted hard reset on the stereo temporarily fixes the problem, I blame Kenwood. 2) Audio sourced from Bluetooth has frequent loud pops and clicks. In Kenwood's defense, Bluetooth is fundamentally flawed. Although it claims to be a cable-replacement technology, it is anything but. Imagine if you had to have a different type of USB cable for each different type of device. That's what Bluetooth profiles are. 3) Scrolling through audio sources is annoyingly slow. For several sources, (USB, iHeartRadio, etc.), the stereo has to stop and see if something is connected before it will let you scroll past it. Most sources cannot be hidden or disabled. So you can't scroll nearly as fast as you want, and sources you will never use (i.e. Rear USB) must be scrolled past each time, forever. 4) The hands-free phone feature sounds so bad that it's unusable. 5) The HD Radio is loud when in HD mode and quiet in regular-old-FM mode. You'll be listening, and your radio is going quiet-LOUD-quiet-LOUD all the time. I disabled HD and now just listen to regular FM. 6) WIth sunglasses on, I can't read the display during the day, and my car has every window tinted as dark as the law allows.

Happy with the radio but not the installation! This radio needs an xmradio tunner. I told the guy checking me out and installing I had a xm account and wanted to be able to use it. When I pick up the car. No xm!! I have to come back to get this done!!! Not happy with Best Buy at all right now.

LED display is unreadable in daylight

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Unfortunately none of the previous reviews addressed this issue. The LED display is very dim and basically unreadable during the day, rendering this unit unusable during the day. I bought the unit a month ago and after trying to adjust the display brightness I gave up and wanted to return the unit and get another one. Unfortunately, Best Buy refused to exchange the unit because they have a 15 day exchange policy. Issue #1 - I understand that store need to have a limit on exchanging products, but to me this product is defective and should be replaced. It has only been less than one month and it unusable. Issue# 2 The installers are great and very professional. However, the stated they are aware of this issue and there is nothing they can do.My point exactly, they know the display is unreadable and they are still selling and recommending this product. I am glad I did not purchase and expensive unit since this is money down the drain. I wanted to exchange this unit ( even if I had to pay extra or pay re-stocking fees) with an almost identical unit from JVC. The LED display work as it is supposed to in the JVC. My advice, Best Buys should not sell this unit, and to customers, buy the JVC. Sorry out of luck.
