Beautiful refrigerator, but it has some flaws

My wife begged for this fridge and mainly for a few reasons, 0) it was more beautiful than the Rock, 1) it had the daylight LED lights on the interior, 2) it had really cool looking sliding drawers on the inside, and 3) it had two extra middle slide out drawers that our kids each claimed as their own (because kids are selfish like that). However, I'm a bit more critical of it. First of all, the fridge had to sacrifice space in the "main cabin", if you will, and you can get a jug of milk and a 2 liter of soda in there but that is about it when it comes to large items. I will admit it is a beautiful looking fridge but honestly I am not sure of it's usefulness in our practical every days lives. I'm sure my wife would rush to the fridge's defense but I'm seeing down the road into my crystal ball that this model isn't the most practical use of the space. For instance, the two slide out drawers have little use to me unless you have kids like mine who each want their own drawer for their own snacks and random junk (I won't be surprised to find legos and poor frost bitten grasshoppers in there from my son...) then I'm just not so sure what the good of them would be. The freezer pull out drawer seems big at first but after filling it up with a few things I'm seeing a lack of useable space due to the three sliding drawers in the pull out freezer drawer. All those drawers/shelves take up valuable space! Also, the unit that was delivered to me had a full on freak out meltdown (poltergeist style) and the LED panel went haywire like a toddler ghost was sitting there pressing all the buttons making the thing freak out (and freak me out in the process). When it was first delivered the water dispenser was wonky and the water came out of the panel itself and not just the water spigot like a properly engineered water dispenser should. So I think the water dorked up the electronics and later in the night, as I was sleeping, the thing was doing unspeakable evil things. Thank the good Lord my dog woke me up. At first I was mad at the dog for waking me, but when I got up to go yell at the dog I found a frigging river of water streaming from the dispenser!! I yelled for my wife to come see the mayhem at 12:30am in the morning and banged on the panel to make it stop. It took three full adult size towels to soak up all the water from what I am now calling the "great flood". I turned the water off at the wall after that nonsense. I called BestBuy and told them to get that haunted refrigerator out of my new house and send me a new unit (which is scheduled for delivery next week). I will say that BestBuy was very responsive in settling this issue and making things right so in that regard I'm pleased.

Beautiful exterior cheaply made interior. If you’re accustomed to quality made long lasting products then skip this and buy a better made brand. Had a Kenmore Elite that was 14 years old. “Upgraded” to Kitchen Aid to match other Kitchen Aid appliances. Love the two extra exterior doors for deli and produce. The refrigerator cubic size is noticeably smaller so I lost a lot of shelf and freezer space. Just means less in groceries lol. Freezer is smaller but like the interior setup. Ice bucket is tiny. Why?! Be careful of inside glass shelves I wound up laying a piece of plastic liner on one shelf for glass jars to avoid scratching. Getting used to refrigerator and the noises it makes. I must say the first 3-4 days I was ready for Best Buy to pick it up! Other reviews indicated the same weird noises I heard. I have several videos of the noises that I can’t upload. Hopefully the kinks are worked out. Finally today I removed the plastic and moved into this refrigerator. The right door needs to be tightened - Yeap you read that correctly door not handle; it was shipped that way. The water dispenser ‘sprays’ water. Overall, I can’t believe the molded cheap plastic parts used for a $4,500 item. Blows my mind. I’m prepared for recalls and Total Tech service calls. Do yourself a favor don’t be fooled by the one extra exterior door compared to other brands. Buy a better quality brand. Next time I’m buying Sub-Zero Wolf. Good luck!

If you buy this fridge make sure you buy the protection plan! Ice build up seems to happen every so often. Unplugging it and thawing it out for a few days didn’t fix the issue and the geek tech had to take the inside top and bottom panels out and manually melt the ice on 4 separate occasions. After 4 1/2 years the ice maker stopped working and the cooling system is going out. Parts are on back order so after a year of dealing with the ice maker and cooling issues Best Buy has replaced my item. On a positive note….Geek squad is awesome to work with!

    Cost benefit analysis

    Posted .

I bought this refrigerator 6 years ago. The part to repair it was approximately $1200. Then about that much for labor. All told to fix it was going to be about $2400. Considering the cost benefit analysis I have opted to buy a new one for approximately $3400. I am buying the same model I had before because I do love the stye and functionality of it. However, I am disappointed I only got 6 years out of it. Proof that the 5 year additional warranty is not worth the extra cost.

It is loud. The ice gets thrown out of the glass because it comes out hap-hazard. The water is okay on a big glass but a smaller one misses the cup and spills over. I think I would have gotten a different model. It has the drawers on the outside and loses the inside shelving where larger bottles and other items are stored. There really isn't much inside side panel storage. However, it looks great. The lighting is tremendous. My wife is happy that it doesn't show fingerprints. The best part is it works well. I just wish I had seen the other model with drawer's inside.

    Beautiful but flawed

Pros: *Looks great. *Fridge drawers feel solid and smooth. *Lighting inside is very nice. *Adjustments are good. *Runs fairly quietly except for the icemaker Cons: *Front panel button arrangement is counterintuitive. It also feels very dated. *Ice maker is slow and loud. Ice dispensing is slow and loud. *The 2 extra drawers just seems a little silly and somewhat wasteful. *The strange sliding flat doors at the bottom also seem a little silly and not sure of their true purpose. *Freezer is dark inside, harder to see things *Freezer drawers are stiff and require more effort to open and close than I would like

Love it. Great space. Great look. The only thing we have had issues is with the water dispenser. We've had to change filter twice within the last 6 months because it will stop dispensing water or making ice.

I am deeply disappointed with this fridge. It looks nice, Is a good size. However in the first month the ice maker stopped working. Then the freezer won’t maintain a proper temperature so ice and food is constantly in a thaw/freeze cycle. So I have this beautiful fridge that I can’t trust keeping very much in the freezer. And when I had a technician out to repair it. They put a thermometer in the freezer saw that at that moment it was at the right temp and rode off into the sunset.

Very attractive refrigerator and great idea with 5 drawers but many issues with ice maker. Repair people have been out to our home 6 times since last July due to leaking and ice maker replacement. In fact they will be coming today on July 4

So the unit does not appear to be worth the price tag. I've had issues with cracks in drawers and icing on freezer drawer. But the split drawers are sweet and it's massive, so at least it's got that.

    Review for KitchenAid 5-door Refrigerator

Expensive. Not enough space for tall items. I thought I'd use one drawer on the front for drinks and one for veggies. The veggie drawer doesn't hold enough. I thought the freezer area was too small for large items, but then I got a giant 21 pound turkey in the bottom drawer. On another note, the inside of the fridge is aesthetically pleasing. I keep the fridge more tidy because I like the way it looks.

Bought this refrigerator one month ago, it was a floor display, had been delivered to another buyer, but apparently did not fit into home. Got a good deal but on delivery one easy access drawer is crooked and on exam they have to replace rails. Frost started developing within one week on one side of the freezer, and the light only goes on intermittently. They tried to reshape the gasket seal and told us we had too much food in freezer. having done this there is now more frost then ever on the right hand side. Now a new gasket seal has been ordered. Hope this works. Somewhat disappointing purchase thus far.

Nice setup with drawers. Not much room for large items like milk and pop. Ice maker area does not hold enough ice for a family of 4. Leaking from top and service needed to be called. Doors out of line and whole refrigerator had leveling problems for geek squad. Parts must be made after ordered and can take 6 weeks. Made in the USA is why I bought, but not a fan. Samsung seems to be better even though reviews say their service sucks.

    Door and Gasket Issues

This refrigerator has factory door alignment issues. Kitchenaid gives you a door alignment tool and instruction to fix horizontal and vertixal gaps. It takes a lot of customer effort to correct manufacturer ‘defects’. Inside of fridge constantly fogs up with humidity when door is opened briefly. Vaporlock gaskets and seals are poorly fitted and do not create a good seal, even after realignment. Various cosmetic defects with cheap plastic panels where they meet stainless exterior. Insulating foam visible through exterior joints and door surfaces. Ice maker constantly clogs when chipped ice is used, caused by melting and refreezing of ice chips at the door. Dont buy. They havent fixed any if these issues since this unit came out.

Overall, this is a really solid refrigerator. The black stainless is a really nice look, which is the primary reason we replaced our previous refrigerator. It has lots of volume for foods, and since we rarely use our freezer having most of our storage at or above waist-height is a better solution for us. I've had no functional issues from the refrigerator. That said, I am disappointed at the quality control on one particular item, which is externally visible spray foam insulation on at least one of the refrigerator doors. It appears someone didn't quite get it right and we ended up with foam that seeped out onto the door, which left a visible chunk of the cured foam. I removed most of it, but an annoying residue remains, which is made more visible by the black background of the refrigerator door. I expected better quality control from Kitchen Aid on one of their high-end products.

It looks nice and the two drawers are great for things like apples and yogurt, but the design makes it very difficult to store anything tall in the fridge or to keep the freezer organized. We only got this one because the one we wanted was backordered. We eventually returned it and got the one we wanted when it came back in stock. Beat Buy was fantastic on the return assistance, even letting us keep this fridge after the return period ended while we waited for our new fridge.

We love this refrigerator, however we have had a few problems with it. The right drawer doesn't seem to close as well as the left. Glad it chimes to let us know because you can't always tell be looking at it. Also, there is a leak in the water on the door. When someone tries to get water is pours on the inside of the door. The unit it still under warranty so we are hoping to have it repaired soon.

This is my second Kitchenaid refrigerator. The first one was less than 3 years old and it went out. The whole middle section did not keep cold. I loved this model because of its looks and is spacious and just absolutely beautiful inside but I am weary of the same issue as my last fridge since now I have thermometers all inside and it almost always reads 40 degrees even though I have it set at 35 degrees.
