Budget Laptop that Punches above its Weightclass

This was a gift for my father-in-law who sorely needed an upgrade. He will use this for browsing, downloading pictures from his camera, emails, watching movies and listening to music. For what he will use this for, it will be more than adequate and last him many years. It looks and feels of quality and its start and load times are fairly decent considering no SSD. The AMD chip and the 8GB of ram def help make for a good experience too. If you're looking for a budget laptop that has a good screen and good performance, this one should fit the bill.

The speed is not what I expected. Two problems have been found. The WIFI connection is unreliable. WIFI drops on this machine even though 2 other devices in the room remained connected. Sometimes the connection drops when the computer is the only one using the connection. The screen brightness is not very bright even when set to 100%. Screen resolution is also disappointing.

I read user reviews before purchasing this item. It's intended for use by a college student. It has the necessary power/storage requirements to do reports, browse and do social media. It's a good buy for what you can do on it. However, not for gaming or serious gamers. I'm happy with the purchase and the performance. No bloatware on this :-) It's my first Lenovo purchase.

Lenovo ideapad 320 - Full Review

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The Lenovo ideapad 320 is a system with great potential for an excellent price. This system starts out right with a good processor, good ports and connectivity, great keyboard and touchpad. A few of the drawbacks of a system in this price point are going to be the quality of the screen, battery life and size/weight. **What This System Is** This is a great entry-level and mainstream laptop. It has all of the pieces you need to do almost anything. The processor is great and snappy, there is plenty of hard disk space and you have a good mix of new features with some legacy compatibility built right in! **What This System Is Not** This system is not some high end gaming system or a computer that is going to make all of your friends envious. It is a mainstream laptop that is going to be excellent for internet surfing, watching movies, and getting work done. That being said, it is no slouch and can handle a small spot of gaming should the need arise. This system is not going to last you all day long on a single charge. On average you will probably get 3-4 hours of battery life out of the system. If you try to game or run some other high performance apps, the battery life can drop down to about an 1 total. **Additional System Specifications** Processor: AMD A12-9720P (4C+8G) RAM: 8 GB (4GB Soldered + 4G DDR4 2400Mhz SK Hynix Removable) - Upgradable to 20GB Total HDD: 1 TB Seagate Mobile 5400 RPM Graphics: AMD Radeon R7 (Embedded in the APU) Optical Drive: CD/DVD-RW Screen: 15.6" 1366x768 Matte type display. Non-IPS. Networking: Integrated Gigabit LAN, Realtek 8821AE 802.11AC Wifi (PCI-E), Bluetooth 4.1 **Processor/APU** The A12-9720P APU is a good chip for this system. It's low power, but still packs a good punch. It has 4 cores for good multi-tasking. The performance is comparable to the Intel Core i7-5550U. This processor was able to handle most anything that I threw at it. **Hard Drive** This system comes stock with a Seagate Mobile HDD. Capacity is 1TB which is great for storing a lot of data, but you will notice it's slow speed during boot and loading programs. I immediately upgraded this system with a Sandisk 240GB SSD (also from Best Buy). This increased the performance of this system almost exponentially. Boot times went from a couple minutes to a few seconds. I highly recommend this upgrade if you have the expertise to perform it or can have someone help you do this. **Noise** The system is generally pretty quite. It can get a little bit louder as you start to play a game. The built in fan will get a little bit up between 30 or 40 decibels. It was never enough to be distracting to me or anyone else and I wasn't worried about the system flying off my laptop or overheating. Another source of noise from this system is with the stock hard drive. This drive is loud compared to recent laptop drives that I have seen. You can generally hear it clicking as you are working with the system. Overall I didn't find that sound annoying, but I was impressed that I was able to hear it in this system. **Screen** One way to save money on a laptop is to pair it with a cheaper screen. This is probably the biggest drawback to this system besides battery life. The viewing angle is minimal and you will likely be adjusting the screen to find your best angle to view it at. Brightness is good, but not great. Also there is a built in dimming functionality that comes with the system as you switch to battery mode. This of course is designed to same battery and make your battery last longer. Unlike most systems however, this mode is integrated directly with the system's chipset. You can adjust the battery dimming level by proceeding to AMD's website and downloading drivers for your system. This will install a Radeon Settings application on your system and then you can look for the "Vari-Bright" option under the "Display" tab. This will allow you to set the maximum brightness level for the system on battery, or to turn the system off all together. **Gaming** This system has got some game! Most games you will have to set to lower graphics levels, but they will usually run quite decently. Here are a few that I tried. World of Warships defaulted to Medium settings. I actually left it there and was not disappointed with the result. The game ran well and looked good. Mad Max (the game) once set to the lowest settings I could get it on was actually playable. The frame rate would drop below 30 when I got into a large battle, but it was still a fun and playable experience. Vikings - Wolves of Midgard: considering the minimum graphics card required for this game is a GTX460, I was not disappointed that this game actually ran on this system. It was a little jittery even at the lowest settings, and wasn't the easiest to play with the low frame rate. I would say not to expect to be able to play the newest Battlefield game or Call or Duty very well on this system. But for many games, especially a year or two old, you'll probably be able to get away with low or medium settings for a playable experience. **Keyboard** The keyboard is nice to type on. There is minimal flexing in the keyboard as you type, so typing is natural. It is really excellent to have a full 10-key as well. The F-keys default to their normal function modes, such as volume and display brightness, etc. You can change this behavior with a BIOS setting, as the Fn key is only a momentary switch and not a toggle. My only minor complaints are the very small up and down arrow keys and the strange connection between the enter key and the backslash key. In practice these really aren't a problem and have not gotten in my way at all. It seems a little bit Mac inspired with the power button in the very far top right corner as well. **Touchpad** I was happy to see a multi-touch touchpad on this system considering that the screen is non-touch. The touchpad has a nice feel and really easy to use and precise. Software comes installed to customize the buttons and gestures to your liking, but by default you have a two-finger scroll and zoom. You can also right click by tapping/clicking with two fingers. Three-finger swipes give you task switching and desktop viewing. Overall an excellent touchpad for a mainstream system. **Packaged Software** The system comes with minimal bloatware. This is a great departure from what Lenovo used to do! The majority of the bloat that I was finding on the system was actually coming from Windows 10 itself. The Lenovo apps now give you full control over how much of their proprietary software you would like to install. Upon first boot the system will ask you if you would like to install their software, and then you can choose which pieces you would like. McAfee is bundled with the system, however, it asks you before installing itself as well. This means that you can load up with a system that is lean and doesn't have a lot of junk in the way. **Disassembly** (CAUTION: You may void your warranty by taking your system apart.) The bottom case comes off of the system with a total of 13 screws removed. First, you remove all 13 screws and then gently pull the optical drive out of the slot. Proceed to carefully pry up the casing underneath the optical drive bay and then work your way around the system slowly popping the snaps apart. With the bottom case removed you can access the HDD, 1x RAM module, WiFi Module and battery. All are pretty easy to remove and replace. The HDD has a tray that you would place a replacement drive inside. The RAM module is also protected by a metal shim that pulls straight up to remove. **Other** In the BIOS there is also a setting to enable SVM (Secure Virtual Machine). **Overall** Overall this is one of the best systems you are going to find in the sub $400 market for laptops. The processor is almost second to none and the overall package makes up for the drawbacks to the system. This is a great buy and one that you're not likely to be disappointed by.

The Lenovo 15.6" Laptop-AMD A12-Series with 8GB Memory and a 1TB Hard Drive was a very good choice. I selected the Lenovo 320-15ABR Laptop. It is an excellent replacement for the HP VISTA I'd been using - no reflection on HP no mfg of Vista would stand a chance these days. Its AMD processor and 8GB of DDR RAM provide enough power for most multitasking.
