Great Capable Productivity Machine for Multimedia

My return period recently ended so I guess I am keeping the laptop. No reason popped up that would have made me return it and I was definitely looking for a reason to be dissatisfied. Spending 1K on a laptop is quite a commitment and luckily Lenovo made it easy to decide. This laptop is great in many ways: it has an awesome true 4K display (none of that pentile BS) that will get bright enough to make your eyes water. Despite 4K being more or less a luxury and not a necessity, they do generally provide a much higher color gamut accuracy than the FHD screens that normally come with these laptops. Images are clear, sharp, bright, and realistic-looking. The trackpad is so comfortable that I have been using it rather than my wireless mouse. It is really responsive and precise, with just enough friction to make it usable but not too much that pointing feels rough. The keyboard is okay, I am not a huge fan of it. It is a bit shallow and does not have a 10-key num-pad which is disappointing. On the bright side, it is backlit and otherwise does not get in the way of typing. Build quality is very good. Whole lotta metal with its powdered aluminum chassis, it feels stiff and durable. Hinges are decent, the display will stay put which ever position you put it though the screen will wobble some when you tap on it. Laptop is a little on the heavy side and is a bit awkward to use in tablet mode due to its weight and bulky 15.6" size, but that is an issue with any 2-in-1 this size. If you are really big on using tablet mode with a laptop, 13.3" or smaller is recommended. However, when you do use it, it is pretty amazing scrolling on that large 4K touch display as a tablet, awkwardness and weight aside. Battery life: When I use it on battery it seems to drain around 15% per hour while doing light productivity work like browsing and watching YouTube with the screen at 75% brightness. I don't really push it beyond that on battery so I can't really say how long a game would run on battery All in all, it meets Lenovo's battery life claims. No HDMI port, but you could use the USB-C port for video output to HDMI with an adapter. It is Thunderbolt, though limited to 2xPCIe rather than the full 4x. I still have not come across any limitations to this and am not planning on using a eGPU anytime soon though from videos, I have seen it is still possible on 2x. Fans: They do come on and off with varying speed. However, they have that whisper quiet sound that is not annoying at all. No whine, more white noise-y. Any ambient noise would drown them out. That black bar issue. The elephant in the room since it is unknown whether it was actually fixed or not. So far, I luckily have not experienced it. I did notice a lot of BestBuy demo units did have it though and one laptop I saw was manufactured as late as Oct 2017. Current units are manufactured much more recently, mine in April 2018. Whether or not this is something that may pop up in the future, I am uncertain. Best recommendation is to check whether you live in the same area as a Lenovo Service Center before buying as it would save the hassle of having to ship to somewhere to get it serviced. It is an issue that Lenovo would cover under warranty. Performance: This is the main point I wanted to share. Performance is good out of the box but it is NOT fully optimized. You can get better performance using ThrottleStop without doing much besides changing a few settings. First thing: Undervolt it. This lowers the power voltage going to the CPU and thus reduces heat and throttling. You can undervolt the CPU, CPU cache, and the onboard graphics chip. I have it set to -0.1475, -0.1475, and -0.1826, respectively (note these are NEGATIVE values). Next thing: ENABLE SpeedShift. For some reason, this isn't enabled by default and cannot be adjusted in the BIOS. Luckily you can turn it on in ThrottleStop. After enabling it, set a value between 0-128. 128 is good for when you use it on battery, 0 is max performance. Basically the CPU will maintain max speeds all the time and not downclock like it does by default. It is great if you use it plugged it and don't have to worry about power consumption. In ThrottleStop you can save separate profiles for AC use and Battery use and I personally have SpeedShift set to 0 and 128, respectively. I have not come across any heat issues using this. Third thing: You may or may not want to enable TurboBoost. It is disabled by default. TurboBoost would allow you to hit speeds of up to 3.8 GHz. Combined with SpeedShift set to 0, the laptop will be running at around 3.6 GHz all the time. The only issue with TurboBoost is that if you are doing a high-intensive task over an extended period of time, you will hit high temps that will cause the CPU to throttle itself. If you are doing a lot of gaming, it is better to leave it disabled. For day-to-day light productivity like browsing, enabling it will make programs open faster and work more smoothly. Of course you can set separate profiles for these different uses in ThrottleStop. For a better tutorial on all this stuff, I recommend watching OWNorDisown's videos on Youtube. He specifically uses this laptop as a guide to Undervolting and also provides benchmarks on all the effects of these settings in his laptop review. Highly recommend checking it out.

Thank you for choosing the Lenovo Yoga 720-15 4K model. This model does have one Thunderbolt port on it. It is a 4-line speed just like the Yoga 720-13 model. The Yoga 720-15 weighs 4.41 lbs. and measures 0.8" thin. We are pleased to hear that the Yoga 720-15 is working out so well. lenovo

Meh, get a Mac at this price

I'm not sure if the problem is Windows or Lenovo but I've had pretty bad luck with my machine. Just today I got the blue screen of death while writing THIS review. The first Yoga I got there was a weird black line that went across the top of the screen. I returned it because if I'm paying this price for a machine, the thing is going to work 100%. The battery life is OK, I'm plugged in most of the time. I do love the touch screen & think it'll be hard to go back to a non-touch screen. When I first got the machine (this happened with both of them), the Windows setup wizard froze. Ok, cool. Great first impression. I was worried it ruined the setup but I rebooted & everything was fine. Really, I think the problem is Windows. Apple makes a FAR superior product. The only reason I didn't go Apple was because the software I need for work doesn't run on a Mac. Looking back, I should have just ran a Windows parallel on the Mac & I wouldn't be sitting here, venting to the review-gods. Overall, I don't hate this machine but I wish Windows got their act together. They've only had 32 years to get it right.

We are sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Lenovo Yoga 720-15. It sounds like it may be an issue with the initial setup of Windows 10. This system is equipped with OneKey Recovery System. There is a very small pin hole on the left side of the device, right near the headphone jack on the device. You will need a pin to push this reset button. Plug the device in. Let the battery charge for about 15 minutes. Push the reset button. The system should boot to a choice screen where you can choose "Restore To Factory Default". Select this. It will delete everything from the hard drive except the original factory install of the operating system. You will need to reinstall all programs and files after the reset. If you don't have copies of the files, try to make one before you restore by selecting "Boot to desktop" and trying to back up your files. You should not need to reactivate Windows 10 after the restore. Be sure any programs you re-install are Windows 10 compatible. lenovo

This laptop has a good discrete graphics card, lots of RAM, good size SSD, fast processor and a 4K touchscreen to boot... HOWEVER, my first purchase had a hardware malfunction with the touchscreen lenovo could not identify. I returned it for an exchange. My exchanged laptop stopped charging after 2 days and now will only power on when plugged in. Additionally the background no longer displays and a black background is all that will show. Great specs, terrible experience with dud hardware. Will not exchange for a third. Will return tomorrow.

    A Capable 2-in-1

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Lenovo really has made a sturdy, powerful 2-in-1. The versatility of the Yoga line is really handy in many situations. The display is beautifully crisp 4k and has responsive touch feedback. The processing power is more than enough for most daily tasks and the graphics power makes for a solid entry level gaming experience, that seems rare in the form of a 2-in-1. The GTX 1050 runs capably in most situations, but in more modern AAA titles, you may have to make some sacrifices to quality or performance. Very few titles will run at 4k reliably and VR seems just out of reach in most circumstances. Still, the performance is impressive in a fairly compact form factor, and is more than enough for my needs. If this is bought with gaming in mind, it should be noted that there is only a 512 gb SSD, so investing in an external hard drive down the road may be worth looking into. The build quality seems exceptional, though I haven't had it long enough for anything to break. One worry I have with 2-in-1s are weak hinges, but these seem plenty strong, thus far. Battery life is decent, considering the hardware and 4k display. The only negative I've found is the screen doesn't get as bright as I would like. While it doesn't impact my experience all that much, it's something that could be improved. All-in-all, this is a great buy if you're in the market for a 2-in-1 with capable hardware. As for price, the listing at $1300 is a little steep, but I was able to snag it for $1000 on sale, which is a great price for what you get.

Thank you for choosing the Lenovo Yoga 720-15. With regard to the hinges on the Yoga 720-15, Lenovo tested the Yoga 720 Series hinges through 25,000 cycles ( 8 to 10 years of normal use), without a failure. This system has a battery life of up to 8 hours, depending on the work that the device is performing. The screen has a brightness level of 300 nits. lenovo

I've had this laptop for over a month and am very pleased. Super fast start up, nice graphics, and easy keyboard. First touchscreen I've had and I like it. It does have a glare on the screen in bright light, as expected, but I like the convenience of having a touchscreen. No need yet for the pen, but maybe later.

First of all I have been reading reviews of loud fan noise I myself have not experienced excessive fan noise, they do kick on from time to time for a minute then Idle right back down. This is a high end 2 and 1 at a mid range price. The laptop is very quick and responsive nice looking screen. As far as gaming goes i'm not a hard core gamer very light gaming only. Battery life is ok I say 5-6 hrs of mid power use. This laptop is future proof for the most part. If you want a higher end lap at a fraction of the cost this is the laptop to have. I know no HDMI output or card reader but that's a easy inexpensive fix. They wont let you do half stars but I give it a 4 1/2 star

Out of the box it is a fast ultrabook which can perform gaming and mixed reality with the gtx1050 video card. If you disable the gtx1050 in the bios, you get an all day laptop with approximately 9-10 hours of battery life. If you connect an egpu, such as the Gigabyte Aorus gtx1080 gaming box or Akitio box, to the Thunderbolt port you get a monster gaming and virtual reality capable system. I personally use the Aorus and get a score of 11 on the Steam virtual reality performance test.

Bought this a couple of weeks ago and like it a lot. Biggest shortcoming is battery life. It's no more than three hours. It would be nice to have some storage expansion options, though 500 GB SSD will probably be enough. Box is light as a feather. Fingerprint reader works really well. The backlighting on the keyboard could be brighter.

I received the Lenovo 720 and powered it up. It was an open box model, certified by the Geek Squad. It would boot up to the setup screen, and then reboot. It stayed in that loop indefinitely. I called Customer Support. I was on the phone for over an hour, talked with three different agents, and was disconnected all three times when it came time to resolve my issue with a return of the the laptop. I will take the laptop to my nearest Best Buy today and return it. It is a 45 mile drive, so I am not pleased. I paid extra for the Geek Squad certification. The box had the stickers on it, but it is obvious that the laptop was not checked out. Sending a non-working unit out as a certified unit is very shabby. In addition, the customer service that was provided was horrendous, as the call was dropped three times during an hour of calls, with no resolution, Shame on you, Best Buy!

    Great Computer for My needs

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

As the tittle says, this laptop is great for my needs. What are my needs? 1- College- This computer has an excellent screen, its bright and very colorful/clear. Its also very capable machine. I can run blackboard for my classes, split the screen with Microsoft Word or excel and it wont skip a beat. 2- Business Operations- I run Quickbooks, my own custom CRM as well as building websites. Again the screen is very important to me since i was coming from a macbook and they usually have excellent screens. 3 Photoshop, lightroom and adobe CC- The GTX makes this computer a solid performer for editing pictures and videos. Also the SSD is super fast. Its not quite as fast as the apple SSD but i was able to transfer 40GB data from an external HDD to my computer and, it took only about 8-9 mins! 4 Light Gaming- I am not a professional gamer but i do enjoy playing games and this is where the computer shines. I had a macbook pro late 2016 with touch bar. The macbook was about 300 dollars more expensive and i can say it was half capable of what this machine is. I can play GTX V, Cities XXL, BattleField 4/1. They all play very smooth on 1080p setting high or medium and on this screen looks amazing! My over all satisfaction is very high coming from apple. Windows has come a long way. Eventho this machine is not constructed as an apple product its really solid! I love love the screen. To me a powerful machine without a good screen is just not worth it. Again keyboard is good, screen is amazing, the specs on this computer is excellent for a 2-1 and, build quality is very solid. So far i haven't had any issues, driver problems or anything like that. If you're looking for a solid machine that has a mix of blood between a 2-1 and a gaming machine? Wait no longer this is the perfect mix!

i bought this computer on 3/1/17. Since then computer was in repair 4 times for 4 month, was replaced. I was given hard time by every tech support representative, lost 50 - 60 hr. in following over phone conversation. i feel it's company policy to completely disregard customer. Since 90% of pc's are getting broken within first 2 yr., potential owner is for rocky and remorsefull ride. All in all, I see very bad customer service, poor quality products and not single reason to buy lenovo again. If you don't want troubles in the life and getting 2nd job to fix laptop, stay way. Btw, after I posted my review on Lenovo side, review was verified and Removed 1 day later. Don't trust positive Lenovo reviews - I had 2 pc's - both broke.

This laptop is exclusive to Best buy and so don't be fooled by others' imitations. The 4K display is outstanding, the SSD makes everything zip, and the graphics card runs Civilization VI at full whack. Civilization VI opens so quickly, within 3 minutes from clicking the icon to loaded. At this price point there is only one corner cut: hard drive capacity. If you can limit storage, or use an external hard drive, this laptop should meet almost any need.

quality & support taints an incredible-on-paper PC

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

TLDR: unparalleled incredible specs on paper, thank your stars if you buy and it works and pray like you life matters that you never have to deal with Lenovo support. I purchased the top of the line model (QHD, 16GB - 8GB onboard+8GB DIMM, 512 NVMe SSD) from BestBuy and purchase 3 years additional onsite and accidental damage warranty from Lenovo. And then got 15 BSODs in 2 weeks. Got a replacement from BestBuy which worked fine for a couple of weeks and then BSODs started again. And the well known black line on the top right corner of screen. And issues with external display, screen flickering, use with Active Pen 2 (purchased separately from Lenovo). I have been in communication with Lenovo for the past 4 months, resulting in 2 remote access to my computer by technicians (who saw the number of BSODs on the event viewer), a carry-in repair at Geek Squad where the black line on the screen was supposedly fixed (it is back again) but the other issues were found to be non-existent as opposed to that experienced first hand by remote access technicians, a sent-to-depot repair where the laptop was kept for more than 35 days where apparently the only problem the team found was a heating issue .... the problems still exist. Oh! and I received a printed page with the return of my laptop from the depot saying that the laptop was returned unrepaired because the customer refused repair - when it was the case manager who requested that I take the laptop back and see if the issues still exists. And the icing on the cake is that never did Lenovo reach out to me with any update on their own. I had to always contact them either on chat or phone and coax information out of them. Imagine my surprise when during a period in those 35 days on depot repair - I was told that the repair was kept on hold because the team needed more information from the customer - and no one bothered to contact me for more than 4 days! Even after escalation of the case to the case manager(s) (one of whom completely stopped responding to any email or phone calls once the laptop got back from the depot), and repeated requests to Lenovo to contact me in proper timeframe, at the very least within the period they promise, I am still waiting to hear back from them regarding an onsite repair that they are going to set-up (apparently that's the best solution they can offer) even though I was promised that I would be hearing a confirmation within 24 hours. At present, I am on the 38 hour mark.

Bought the Yoga 720 15" over the HP and surface pro due to better specs. Everything worked great except I noticed a black line on top of the screen. Went to BestBuy and exchanged it for another one. The screen looks much better but I noticed the audio sometime will pop. I also noticed light leak on top right corner of the screen and the white screen looks uneven (it'll go away if I tap on the screen). Wi-fi wouldn't connect so I had to reboot the computer twice and finally worked. Not feeling good about this one either. I will exchange it again for another one because I really want to keep the Yoga 720. If the 3rd one still has similar issues, I will just return it for the refund and wait for few month until Lenovo addresses all the bugs. Lenovo may have shipped few bad ones to BestBuy.

First, to be fair this was a "Certified Open Box" unit. Supposed to include all original items, fully functional, full warranty, etc. This unit has a black line across the display from the top to the right side. This unit was sometimes not charging while plugged in. This unit did not sit flat on a flat surface - the front corner is raised higher than the rest by a few millimeters so the whole thing gives/moves when you go to type on it. Very disappointed with what could have been a nice laptop at a good price.

No, I would not recommend this to a friend
