Ok, I feel really bad about this, I'm mostly disappointed in myself, because I've read a bunch of reviews here, and I also read a bunch of serious complaints on Linksys forums, but I saw this router on sale and bought is anyway. BTW, I've returned it the same day. I've been on the marked for a new router after upgrading my cable modem. I had a Netgear R7000 for few years, it was ok, then I bought a ASUS RT-AC68P, it actually felt like a huge upgrade, despite the fact that they are on the same level. Then I saw Linksys WRT1900ACS, with all the reviews screaming about it's superior range and speed, "best router in AC1900 category" they said... so I picked it up, hooked it up and went on testing, just to find out that: 1. Range is actually not as good as ASUS or Netgear. 2. Router interface is painfully slow, firmware update took 10 minutes, initial set up was probably 10 minutes. Other routers did those tasks in 2 minutes tops. 3. Router web interface has adds, simply, get the heck out of here. I just packed it back up, and took it back to the store. I had bad experiences with Linksys in the past, and now I'm pretty sure I will never touch their products again. Bottom line. There are some other routers that have good reviews, like D-Link DIR880L, or TP-Link Archer something... but from the ones I've tried, ASUS is the best. ASUS RT-AC68P gave me great range and speed, and web interface is better than others, and the phone app is elegant and smooth. Something good... Well the device itself looks good. From the forums it sounds like with the right third party firmware it can be a beast. Packaging is good. I think that's about it.

    Parental Controls...Ha!!!

Router works great. Fast and easy to set up. My only issue is that with the parental controls you can only block websites by address, not key words. So let's just say you have a 15 yr old trying to get to every adult site on the net. You have to type in the web URL of EVERY ONE OF THEM! You CAN NOT block them by key words anymore. I think the rest of the router and software are wonderful, but how can they remove this feature? It's been in their routers for years, now it's gone. Unacceptable!

    Fast and Reliable

Let's start with performance. I should first mention that I'm lucky to have a gigabit fiber optic broadband to my house, so I can get the maximum out of my Linksys WRT1900acs. As a baseline, a Macintosh plugged directly into my modem sees no more than 600 mbps down and 930 mbps up, even with cat 6 cable. Using a 2016 MacBook Pro, I've done a bunch of informal tests using http://beta.speedtest.net. Here are the results, in megabits per second: Line of sight (5 feet): 322 down, 789 up Through a floor (8 feet): 317 down, 537 up Through a floor and wall (12 feet): 303 down, 445 up Through a kitchen half wall (25 feet): 305 down, 359 up Through furniture, stairs and wall (30 feet): 272 down, 249 up Through a floor (greatly angled path) and wall: 268 down, 309 up My old Apple Airport Expresses would only muster 25 mbps through a floor. Note that most other speed test sites report lower speeds than SpeedTest. I have found the numbers to be fairly consistent. In practice, when performing multiple downloads from the Apple App Store (just to test), I see no more than 220 mbps. Could be limited by the Apple servers. Regarding reliability, I have been using this router for one month with zero problems. I have not needed to reboot it nor have had any issues with the software (the administration tools that you get when you connected to the router via web browser). Regarding the router management software, it works well, meets my basic needs, and is easy to use. There are three passwords: admin, main network and guest network. I am not taking advantage of many of the features, but I am using the VPN feature. This was fairly easy to set up for my iPhone: use the router's software to generate the "client configuration" OpenVPN file (which contains certificates, among other things), e-mail myself the configuration file, install the free OpenVPN software on my iPhone, open the e-mail attachment, and turn on VPN. That's it. Note that though the iOS 10.2 supports VPN, it doesn't seem to support OpenVPN... you'll need the OpenVPN app. With the router's VPN, I get enhanced security, but not anonymity. I did attach an external drive to the router and it was immediately accessible on my Mac. However, I was unsuccessful in getting it work as a Time Machine backup device. Still, one can share files between devices, but transfer times seemed quite slow. Overall, I am extremely happy with the Linksys WRT1900acs. In my experience, it is very fast, with good range, and has been 100% reliable. The software is complete for basic use and more, and is also reliable and easy to use. Plus, the device is "retro cool".

    Powerful Signal & Easy Setup

I received a free sample from Linksys in exchange for my honest feedback. I replaced our wireless n router with this Linksys WRT 1900ACS Dual-Band router and it filled all the empty spots in our 3 bedroom house with wi-fi. The hardest part of the setup was opening the box and removing the router. In all, it took about 15 minutes in total to complete the setup. Instructions were clear and simple and it worked without problems. The AC signal to my iPhone 6 works great and is much better than my previous n router with a stronger signal and faster download times. I am extremely pleased with this router.

    Best router I've ever used

I had issues with interference & this solved it! I have so many devices in my house that everyone connecting to 1 router was causing network interference and resulted in effective disconnection. This router, with its dual band high-end WiFi solved that problem. Also, the quad antennas are a big help, and they let me have access throughout the house (which was another issue I had). The only issue (and it's a small one) is that I wish it had more robust parental controls. FULL DISCLOSURE: I received this router for free from Linksys in exchange for my honest feedback.

    Mixed Bag

Bought due to numerous reviews (both professional and on this site) of how great the wireless range is on this router, however my experience so far has been frustrating. Replaced an older Asus Router RT-N66U that I loved (great signal) that was beginning to go out. The Linksys was easy to setup, and I was up and running within 15 minutes with all devices connected. About 2 days later my wife began complaining of connection issues, so when I started checking her devices I noticed weak signal strength (in our living room - about 30-40 feet away from router that is located in my game room). Tested other devises in the living room (phones, laptops, tv) and also showed low signal strength. Went out and bought the Linksys High Gain antennas, which slightly increased signal to the living room (but is still low). I also looked at my Nest Thermostat that is located 20 feet away from router and has a clear line of sight, and the signal isn't even high at this location. Tested signal strength from my living room is consistently between -80 and -70 dBm. (Standing right beside the router test better than -40 dBm.) A little further away at my front door is my wireless camera that will not stay connected to the router consistently. All of these issues were non-existent with my older, and in my opinion, inferior router. On the plus side: Parental controls, FTP access, the phone app, Device Prioritization, etc. all work wonderfully. I REALLY want to like this router, but the lack of strength of wireless signal is a deal breaker with the amount of wireless devices in my house. Perhaps I just received a lemon???

      Hi Bld93,

We'll help you check if the router is still responding. The wireless networks are susceptible to physical obstructions that may lead to low or poor signal. You can tweak the router’s wireless channel to avoid possible interference on your network. Will Not Stay Connected To Modem

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased this WiFi router to replace an older Linksys model that was working perfectly before being damaged by lightning. The new unit was easy to install and setup and for the first few days, I was pleased with it. Then it began to have a problem staying connected to the cable modem and data would drop for a few seconds about ten times per hour. When working on the internet, the browser would freeze for several seconds and then start working again. The worst problem though is with my company computer. It is connected to a secure remote VPN network. Each time the router looses connection to the internet, I have to close out and log into the network again. I began to research the problem and tried numerous potential fixes, but the problem is still happening. There are pages full of the same complaint all over user forums and there seems to be no solution. Just to double verify that the router is the problem, I installed a ten year old WiFi router and it is working properly. The only problem with it is that the coverage range is not enough for my needs. I feel like I have wasted $230 and spent many hours trying to repair a product that is well known to have a problem and there is no solution.

    Firmware Holds Back Maximum Potential

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The WRT1900ACS has a LOT of potential but the firmware provided out of the gate seems to hold back the maximum capability of the router. I've been using this router for about 3 weeks now and I can honestly say that I was a bit disappointed with the performance. Packet drops were the norm, buffering issues were plentiful (and in 2016, BUFFERING FOR ROUTERS SHOULD BE NON-EXISTENT), the router would do a pseudo reboot (the wireless connections would 'drop' but not actually drop... it was weird), and the time it would take for a wireless device to reconnect (after a lengthy disconnect) is atrocious. The (administration) interface has changed a lot since the WRT54G days BUT in many ways has been reduced in terms of configuration settings and features. Also - writing files to a USB 3.0 external hard drive could be faster. Linksys should provide a firmware update that allows for a true advanced interface (instead of just being able to log directly into the router as opposed to using an application to manager the router). Despite my gripes, I like the router quite a bit. The packaging/presentation was quite thoughtful, it has a nice compact design and the LED lighting was quite sophisticated. It's performance wasn't bad, but the firmware REALLY holds it back from being a GREAT router. I looked for a firmware update a few times before submitting my review and none was available. I'm not going to totally give up on this router yet and hopefully a firmware update will be released that will really make this router shine!

Bought this router after using wrt1900ac. Thought acs will be better so tries to give it a shot. Took the router out of the box and hook it up with computer. Right away got error and will not take to the configuration page. Resettled the router twice bit same result. Googles it and found to be a major bug. Not sure if linksys is anymore reliable. Finally was able to get in by checking the second option on the main page after reading Google reviews. Working fine now but hoping it will last.

    Amazing Router

After seeing the boxing this router came in, I knew it was going to be a great product that I was really going to like. It did not disappoint. Setup is super fast and easy. A very happy surprise is that I set up my wifi's name and password the exact same as what my old linksys wifi setup and all my gear automatically connected and I didn't have to reestablish my wifi connections for all our devices. The speed and range that I am getting on router is better than I expected. I have had the router for a week now and have tested it in many different ways. I really like the dual band features for this router, however I did find that on the 5 ghz band did not travel thru our plaster walls as well as the 2.4 ghz channel. So I connect the devices in the bedrooms on the 2.4 and the living room devices in the same room as the router on the 5 ghz band and everything works perfectly. There are no dead zones in our house with this router and I don't have to wait for "buffering" when streaming videos anymore. This router definitely gets 2 thumbs up from me and the setup was so easy I really feel like you don't have to be very tech savvy to use. *I did receive this router free from Linksys in exchange for my honest feedback.

I had to pay the wiring guy who did my home to get the unit's software running. And even for him, it was not simple. He had to call Linksys. But now that it is up and going, it is terrific. I get high coverage not only in my home, but throughout my 2-acre property.

Installed to replace Linksys wrt54G. Signal is about 20% stronger throughout house (meter measured). Set up and configuration fairly easy. After 1st day it will not allow me to connect to 5Ghz band. So not very useful as a dual band router. If using WPA or a combination throughput drops 50% Use WPA2 only. Not sure this router is worth the extra money over similiar but much less expensive options.

great router, but possibly not worth an upgrade

[Note that I received this product for free in exchange for an honest review] I wasn't looking to utilize the open source features, but I was looking for an improvement to my wi-fi range over my current Linksys EA6900. I tested the WRT1900ACS extensively in my setup (including a Linksys RE6500 range extender), and I did not find it to be an improvement over the EA6900 in terms of range and speed. In fact, I found it to be less reliable (frequent drop-outs). I also tested it in my girlfriend's apartment in an old building with plaster walls where she had poor coverage from her older Wireless-N router in the bedroom, despite the small size of the apartment. Again, the WRT1900ACS wasn't much of an improvement (for N devices), if any. Overall I think it's a good solid router, and if you have an older router or are interested in the open source features, I think it's a solid buy. But if you don't care about open source and already have a recent AC router, this isn't worth an upgrade.
