A step forward for Velop family

With this router Linksys has addressed some of the drawbacks I encountered with their Velop node wifi system; a) This router has 4 ethernet gigabit ports where Velop in base node has only 1. b) This router has USB 3.0 connector where Velop node has none (although on website it states this is for future use - possibly for printer or NAS connection?) c) This router has 4 directable antennas (and 6 internal high-power amplifiers). It looks like a traditional router and can be hung on the wall, all of which cannot be done with a Velop node. As such I think this is a nice alternative/addition to the Velop node system and would recommend. In the box; Packaging is pretty much all recyclable. Router – Has 4 movable but non-detachable antennas as well as reset and power on/off buttons. It is backward compatible to 11a, b, g and n. Somewhat surprising as most new routers these days are only n and ac. Small power brick with sideway plugs and 58” cord length Cat 5e 35” ethernet cable Setup instructions are sparse so if you want to really get the specs, etc. go to linksys.com and search for mr8300. NOTE: I was also sent a Linksys model WHW01P AC1300 Velop 2 band wifi mesh extender. I don’t think this would normally be included if you purchase this router? It was easy to add to the network and worked fine. Plug is situated as to help not block other plugs if used on a wall outlet. Router has 3 bands one 2.4 and (2) 5 GHz. One of the 5GHz is used for backhaul and the other two frequencies (2.4 and 5 GHz) are used by your mesh network. It is AC2200 rated which means theoretically it can achieve wireless speeds of 2200 mbp but I believe this has stated speeds of 867 mbps for 5 GHz and 400 mbps for 2.4 GHz bands. The gigabyte ports have max speed of 1000 mbps. Pros; I am not going to go into exact speeds or range I achieved as results can be affected by what internet speed you are paying for as well as other networks in your area, your modem/equipment/devices, how your house/appt. is built etc. I will say I was very happy with the router coverage and speeds I received with my 10 wireless and several hard-wired devices/computers. Setup- was easy using the Linksys app and my Android phone. I just followed the directions in the app/setup instructions and about 20 minutes later I was up and running - with system named, password and security set and the router and mesh extender connected. Make sure you use the channel search option – it will scan for the best channel to use given traffic, etc. around you. You can set priority of attached devices – allowing you to make sure any particular device gets priority over others. Can also use app to connect to your system remotely App/software will automatically check for firmware updates. Cons; No real minuses but time will tell for reliability and using more mesh expansion. Overall a nice router for those needing a little more flexibility than a Velop node can offer. Add to that the flexibility to add more mesh nodes/extenders as needed and this unit is definitely worth a look.

My Mom installed this! She said it was really easy, just follow the instructions via the iPhone app. Hook ups to all devices was done but she did say a prayer before beginning. She has come a long way with her computer knowledge!

This router was easy to setup and has been working great so far, I also like that it has a separate guest network. The only I didn't like was the keyhole slots was not big enough for regular screws.

This excellent router Has a lot of hidden little features such as, the ability to pause anyone who is utilizing the router aka parental controls. You really can’t go wrong with any Linksys router.

The WiFi reception around our home was immediately better. We have not yet tried streaming a movie (the primary reason we tried a router upgrade), but if it does help, it will be a huge improvement, as streaming movies prior to this has been problematic at best.

I'm glad that I bought a Linksys WiFi Router. My previous WiFi router wasn't a Linksys and it gave me a lot of problems.

great router for my 1000sqft apartment. i subtracted 1 star because the only way to setup the router is to use a smart phone. yes it worked easily, but i didnt want to give linksys access to my phone in order to use their router

It works pretty well but I’m seeing slightly slower speeds than I did with the AC router this replaced. The app may be a little too simple as it prevents you from changing some things you’d expect to be able to like wireless channels.

I didn't realize how a "good" router makes a difference in the internet speed. I connect to VPN at times and I can't believe how quickly I connect. Wish I had bought this much sooner! I already recommended it to a co-worker.

My wife and I run several AirBNB’s and this product made our lives a lot easier and so much cheaper. We piggybacked off our internet to several other locations. This aloud us the freedom to go wireless.

This is a great router. I don't have it anymore, however, because I ended up upgrading to a prosumer level setup with individual network components. Can't complain about the router, though.

Takes a bit to install all the wires and get times linked. WiFi signal is pretty strong close by but may need boosters in a big home. I like the APP that can link up to the router. Super convenient!!!

I bought this router to upgrade the one we had. So far this router as worked well sometimes it has to be unplugged then replugged to get network reception in the back of the church. Overall I am pleased with this router.

Not sure why, but i get 100 mbps from the cable company and only 40-60 at the computers. Router claims to support speeds above this and the computers are newer so not sure why. In addition, range is not good over 30 feet on the same floor. Speed comes down as well.

      Hi Hagger,

The Linksys MR8300 was designed to deliver high-speed Wi-Fi to multiple devices simultaneously. To isolate, try to use the Channel Finder on the Linksys app since this can help optimize the performance of your system. This is the easiest router setup I've ever done. It sends a strong wifi signal from one end of my ranch home to the other. I really like knowing, via the app, what devices are hooked to my wireless network.

I had a smart linksys 1900 smart router and had band width problems. the AC2200 solved my problem. Remember the position of the antennas is the secret to setting the router for the best band width.
