Needed something sturdy after learning that I couldn't game online while calling someone over the internet. It works well with Spectrum and has done well handling multiple devices.

Linksys MR8300 Max Stream AC2200 Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi Router. I like the newer, easily hidden, and decorator-friendly mesh systems (Linksys Velop, etc) that were introduced a year back. That said, I actually prefer having a multi-ethernet port, powerful primary router. This new Linksys router lets me have both. This version of the Max Stream AC2200 is also a mesh-enabled router (notice the MR replaces the EA in the model name) that can be expanded by Linksys’ multi-band Velop mesh system nodes. Think of this router as being a more versatile VELOP node. I really don’t mind the black spider-like router up on a cabinet or in my closet because I like being able to orient the antennas to distribute Wi-Fi radio signals around my office or media room. Its 4 ports of 1gig ethernet hand off connections to my other devices. And, I can place wife-friendly mesh nodes from the Velop system anywhere else. Linksys makes the entire setup process easy and reliable. SETUP and PERFORMANCE: A mobile device (iOS or Android) loaded with the Linksys App and an Internet connection from you service provider are all that is needed to get started. (This router must by the primary router (node) if you are adding it to your Velop network.) I use the MR8300 in Bridge Mode and that was easy to accomplish. Additional Velop Nodes connected to this primary router also operated in Bridge Mode without any other changes. I was able to stream 4K video to a TV on my outdoor deck and our iPhones, tablets, and streaming players. Wi-Fi access was reliable anywhere in our home. Tested Internet speeds matched my ISP’s modem except when I got further away from that location. It was then that the second Velop node I had must have become the primary signal source. With this new Linksys setup speeds continued to stay high and stable instead of the fall-off I typically saw. That was definitely different . . . and better than before. The phone APP used for installation and management uses non-technical language. No Web interface needed. You can prioritize several devices to achieve maximum bandwidth, It tests your network and shows speed. It allows parental control over prohibited sites and allows you to set up a Guest Network. And, routers aren’t my thing. SUMMARY: The Linksys MR8300 appears to be a serious stand-alone or Velop primary router. Considering it’s only a slight premium over a Velop node, it offers extra ports and probably some added range. I like it. It’s the easiest setup possible, gives even a novice lots of control, and works reliably. Recommended.

My previous router was an AC dual band, with a dual core processor, speeds up to 1300 mbps (for the AC frequency on 5ghz channel). This Linksys is a quad-core processor, with 3 bands, speeds up to 2.2 gbps. I decided that it was the need to upgrade and have this. I have owned once a Linksys WiFi router previously about a decade ago (the old WRT54G model, which became popular then) and thereafter since our provider speeds were going faster and wireless technology changing, we upgraded to other routers that were not the Linksys brand. This year we decided to go with Linksys again. Setup was easy at first using the Linksys app which is to be simple. Though, I have read some reviews that says that you cannot access the router configuration through a web browser, on your mobile phone that is, which is true (it will just keep telling you to download the iOS or android app). However, you can go to your computer or tablet, and point your browser to the usual 192.168.1.1 address configure from there with more advanced options. You can create an account to login (new users get a 15% off promo code emailed), or put in the recovery code which is on the base of the router itself. I managed and prefer to always have my 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz channels named separately so I can choose which band to connect to. But, the Linksys exclusive app itself is not bad at all, and more simplified, but not much advanced options like splitting your 2.4 and 5 ghz channels. I did do two speed tests, before with my older router and after with the newer router. I must say, results may vary and that you may have something different, and rather not hold this accountable, but there did show a 50mb gain (and we have Comcast xfinity 400mb tier internet speed, with the appropriate modem). Of course I ran the speed tests three times to be sure. I believe the 3rd band (or second 5ghz channel) does help and especially with the quad core processor. Not much difference between my old router and this routers performance, but played multiplayer games online as well as 4K streaming on Netflix, overall a smooth experience without lag. My Linksys router did include an additional Mesh WiFi extender, which you simply plug into and outlet. But I haven’t set it up at this time. Our house isn’t a 2 or 3 story, but a simple one story. It may come in handy if we would desire to have our mobile devices connect if we were to be outdoors either front or backyard.

Wifi coverage is good, visual interface not particularly intuitive, and cannot do advanced setup from the phone app. Older wired devices routinely dropping ip addresses until static addressing was assigned. Logging and troubleshooting did not capture why the addresses were dropping. Attached USB drive used as media server does not stay attached, routinely have to go back into settings to reattach the drive. Same behavior with both a WD and a Samsung SSD.

      Hi,

An up to date firmware will greatly help to stabilize the overall performance of the router. Moreover, we can have our Escalation Engineers help you investigate what’s causing the older devices to drop on the network as well as look into the challenge with the USB drive. If you’re willing, please share more details at LinksysCares@linksys.com along with your contact information, and a link to this review as our reference.

I bought this to replace a router that died the day after I started working from home. It was easy to set up and I was hoping to love it but it didn't seem to have nearly as good of a range as our previous wifi router. I took it back and bought a NetGeat Orbi AC3000 (RBK50) router with two satellites. It's not a fair comparison since my new system has two satellites but I am very happy with the coverage and speed of the Orbi. BTW, if I had an apartment or much smaller home, this would probably be a great router. It really worked well, but I just couldn't get a good signal in parts of my house.

      Hi, FamilyMan,

We regret to hear that you already returned the device as we could’ve had our Escalation Engineers check if there’s anything else that can be done to improve its coverage. Moreover, we respect your decision, but don’t hesitate to tap us anytime at [email protected] should you decide to use a Linksys product again. We’d be glad to give you a hand.
