I tried many locations for placement with not much difference in performance. I finally returned it. I then installed a Google Mesh system. Much more expensive but it really worked well. Hi speed wifi everywhere.

If placed too far from an existing router, a range extender may not expand Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi may be spotty. The Spot Finder feature does a great job of helping users find the best position for optimum performance.
