The distance you mentioned should be enough for the range extender to connect to your main router. The firmware of the device may have been outdated which cause the challenges that you experienced.

The behavior of the unit is totally not the expected. Make sure to place the extender to spot away from physical obstructions for optimal performance. Equip the latest firmware, utilize the Spot Finder feature, and it should get an optimal signal from the main router for isolation. Does the job of extending wifi. I can now stay on wifi till the end of my long driveway. Its worth noting that it creates a new wifi connection name - so you'd end up with your original network and then the _ext (extension) one. I received a free sample from Linksys in exchange for my honest feedback.
