I guess Xfinity just wants to force you to buy their junk.

Aside from having an updated firmware, it is also recommended to position the RE7000 Extender at least 50% from your router's Wi-Fi signal to ensure stable connectivity. You may take advantage of your extender's Spot Finder Technology feature to guide you where to properly relocate the device for optimal performance. Quality seems good and I think the Linksys name stands for quality. I so think at $100 the price is a little high.
