Customers are saying

Customers commend the Microsoft Surface Duo 256GB for its dual screens, multitasking capabilities, and stunning design. They appreciate the long battery life and thin profile, which makes it highly portable. However, customers express concerns about the camera quality, software bugs and glitches, and limited RAM, which can hinder multitasking.

    Great hardware and bad software

This phones form factor has so much potential but the software is almost unusable. I did but the optional surface pen 2 which if you are buying this phone is a must. I am hoping that Microsoft will make the needed changes and things will get better. For now I am incredibly disappointed in the software.

      Hello,

We're sorry that your new Surface Duo hasn't lived up to expectations. If you haven't done so already, we recommend updating its software to the most recent version as that may fix some of the issues you're experiencing. For information on how to do this, please go here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4578416/surface-duo

      Hope that helps,

    NOT USABLE ON SPRINT NETWORK

I can't speak to the quality of the phone because I was never able to use it. I spent HOURS of my life waiting on the phone for customer service and was ping-ponged between stores ( Sprint, T-mobile, and Best Buy). This phone is advertised to work on the Sprint network, BUT IT IS NOT USABLE on SPRINT. When I drove to the Best Buy store (my final trip) their staff was great, but that doesn't erase all the frustrations, hours of wasted time and gas, to simply have to return the phone.

I actually think this is a great device. I think it is flawed by a low amount of RAM, an almost average camera, and a price that puts it among devices that are technically better spec'ed. It was hard for me to use this as my main device. It really shines in some areas and really fails in others.

Excellent first gen product. Not without bugs but just know what youre buying beforehand. Youtube a few reviews and make sure it can fit your lifestyle. It cant be mounted easily to a bike or bicycle and its not an easy switch from traditional phone forma factors. The camera is average but overall, the device is magic!

Note: I received this product free for testing. Reviewers in this invitation-only program (Tech Insider Network Program) are provided products for the purpose of writing honest, unbiased reviews. My phone came with the phone, bumper guard case and a charger. The phone charger is a USB-C to a USB-C and will not work in a regular USB port (USB-A). It does have an electrical plug. I had to purchase another charging cable for my car which has the standard USB-A port. It was very easy to setup and my SIM card transferred everything nicely. After resetting ring tones and tweaking a few things I was good to go. It only transferred my primary email account so I had to setup the other 2 manually. The fingerprint security setup was easy and actually works great – even with a wet or very dry finger. It is also in the proper location and flows naturally. It seemed that I wouldn’t have to contact Verizon. Not so fast … it turns out that I wasn’t receiving any text messages. The Microsoft support page shows the following on how to fix that issue: “If you moved your Verizon SIM card from a previous phone to your new Surface Duo, you may find that you can send text messages, but not receive them. In this case, please contact Verizon Wireless and ask them to provision your Verizon SIM with the “CDMA-Less” feature. You will need to provide them with the IMEI number for your Surface Duo. To get the IMEI for your Surface Duo, tap Settings, tap About, and the IMEI will be listed on the page. Once the feature is enabled, please hold down the power button and tap Shutdown. Then press the power to turn Surface Duo back on.” You need Verizon level 2 tech support to fix the issue and they were a little confused so that took over an hour. Hopefully they will get better at this soon. The Surface Duo also connected fully with a 2018 Outback and a 2019 Outback. The 2018 has been finicky and would never connect fully with my previous phone (Note 8) so this easy connection was much appreciated. The Surface Duo is magnetic so you don’t want it close to your wallet or it could demagnetize your cards. I put mine in the outer pocket of my purse. Phone quality is good. They need to allow higher volume control (why is this a problem on almost every phone?). People commented that I was talking softly when I was at normal volume. I turned that volume to max and it was okay. I find it easier to use speakerphone with this phone and then it is easier to hear the calls. Otherwise you will need to fold the phone to hold it up to your ear. The dual screens are great. And the hinge is very functional and seems sturdy. The Duo has a little weight to it and feels sturdy. Not everything can be displayed on both screens at once (“spanning”. In some apps you have to tweak the settings or open in a new window to use both screens. If you display an app or phone on both screens you will notice the gap in the middle. But I prefer this than the actual screen folding as Samsung seems to have a lot of issues with that feature. This seems like it will hold up. Swiping can be problematic. You have to swipe up and over if you want something to display on both screens. That can take several tries. You access your apps by swiping up but that is also how you move an app off screen. To close apps swipe up and hold for a second. Then you can slide them to close. It can be cumbersome. The phone ships with gestures on but you can turn them off in Settings / System / Gestures / System Navigation and turn on 3 button navigation. Then you will have a home button and a back arrow. That really helped the flow. My phone is unlocked so it doesn’t come with a lot of bloatware and I love that. It has 256GB and the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor is lightning fast. The camera is 11 megapixels and can also scan QR codes. It is hard to use. Open the app and you can take a selfie. But you have to fold the phone backwards and then turn the phone to take a picture of something. My small hands find it awkward to hold. Picture quality is good to very good but low light pictures suffer. An external window would have been helpful. There isn’t an indicator that you have a text or missed call. That is one of the biggest drawbacks. There is a “peek mode” where you leave the phone partially open but I didn’t find that feature that useful. Again, an external window would have been more functional. The Surface Duo also doesn’t have 5G capability. The battery life has been amazing. For how much I have been using it, my old phone would have needed recharging twice. The Surface Duo doesn’t come with a Surface Pen and at this price it should. There is also no place to store the pen. I don’t have a Surface Pen to test with but my previous phones have had a pen and it can be very useful. The dual screens really make me love this phone. Yes, it can be problematic but I can easily multi-task and each screen is big enough to be functional. The Microsoft Apps (Excel, Word, etc…) are integrated nicely and very functional. I would rate the Surface Duo 3.7 stars. It could have been a 5 with an external display and a better camera. It is very functional but still has a few kinks to work out. And at this price they should include a pen and a USB-C to USB-A connector.

Excellent hardware by Microsoft - premium, elegant and turns heads. Ok Android environment - it works, but needs tweaks. Works and works well. This is productivity device, as in checking your calendar while on the phone with someone or having maps up while watching youtube. The camera is sufficient, especially for being productive.

Excellent phone! This phone is the first phone to come along in a while with a learning curve because of its unique design. Give it 3 days and the brilliance of this device begins to shine and it becomes natural to use. One camera is a bummer if you take a lot of photos, but as a productivity tool this is premium.

Nothing more than a toy. Too wide to really be used as a phone. I would not use this as a phone replacement. And since it has a SIM card slot why did you not include an SD card slot. That's the most disappointing attribute of all. Way too much black space around the screen. Could have picked up another inch or two by going edge-to-edge with the screen technology. Got mine on a Monday and returned it on Tuesday. Definitely not worth $1,300. If it will was priced more around $300 I might have kept it.
