Great travel hybrid with a couple omissions

I travel extensively for my job and grow weary of carrying my Dell Inspiron 13 around, as ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain. I primarily use my computer for browsing, video playback and light MS Office duties, and considered an iPad Mini 4 as it would do most of what I needed for a very light weight with standardized accessories with my iPhone. When I saw the Surface Go announced, I decided to give it a try and after a week of criss-crossing the country have been pleased with the decision as a new Surface user. The Go's form factor is very similar to a Gen1 iPad, very small and light. Spending an extra $100 for the (necessary) Type Cover feels like a ripoff and adds substantially to total cost, but with it the machine was sufficiently speedy for my on-the-go work emails and browsing, including multiple Chrome tabs open with Youtube videos. I wish the battery lasted longer, but it is sufficient for most tasks. Now for the picked nits: I wish the device had a USB-A port. I also wish it had a full-size SD card port, though MicroSD is just fine for most folks and I appreciate the extra memory capability. I will either need to replace multiple SD cards with MicroSDs or purchase a USB-C SD card adapter which is another peripheral to lose...but I knew that prior to purchasing the Go. On the whole, I have enjoyed the machine as it is less than half the weight of my Dell and does everything I do with a laptop on the road, with the ability to still use full Office. I have owned multiple netbooks and the Surface exceeds all of them as a laptop in terms of size, weight, usability and performance. The BIGGEST issue I see with this device is there is no method that I can discern for Amazon Video purchases to be downloaded to a Surface Go and played back while on an airplane. This makes the Go more or less useless as a media consumption device in any circumstance where wifi is not available, and is a GLARING omission by Microsoft. Yes, I could have purchased movies via iTunes or the Microsoft Store or download via Netflix, but this limits flexibility which makes the Go much less useful as a hybrid and more of an expensive yet performance-compromised small laptop. For this reason alone I have considered returning my Surface Go and replacing it with an iPad Mini 4 as I originally thought, as the iPad is more suited for media consumption but poor (in my experience/opinion) for work and email. For this reason I may keep the Go, but I'm disappointed that Amazon and Microsoft have not come up with a solution.

      Hi there,

We're thrilled to hear that the Surface Go has been the perfect travel companion! It may be a small package, but it sure packs the powerful performance of a laptop all inside this convenient tablet. We're glad that this very versatile device has been able to fit your business needs while on-the-go. We're sorry that you're not able to download movies from Amazon. We looked to see if there was anything to do, but unfortunately at this time, downloading movies to watch later from Amazon is only compatible with the following devices: Fire tablets (except Kindle Fire 1st Generation), Fire phone, Android phones and tablets and iOS devices. We're glad you found some alternative entertainment options for your trips. We would like you to know that we are sending your feedback up to our team, so thanks for sharing your detailed experience with us!

We hope you continue to love all the Surface Go has to offer.

      Kind regards,

      Jessica

3.5 Stars - Other Surface Models Suggested

In general, I like Microsoft Surface products and found this pad/laptop combo very convenient and functional. Maybe I just had a bad unit but mine only lasted 14 months, just after my extended warranty expired. 1. The pad/laptop stopped working and memory can't be recovered because the data is embedded in the motherboard. 2. The computer sometimes didn't boot up when I used the on/off switch until I plugged it in. 3. It seemed to malfunction at times when booting up out of sleep mode. I almost always left the computer in sleep mode. Maybe it is better to shutdown more often and reboot? 4. I was close to capacity with memory with only 64GB which could have caused an overload when I plugged in a peripheral before it decided to never boot up again..... 5. Other suggestions in similar price point and configuration include: Surface Go 7 bundle with an i3 processor, 4GB and 128GB HD with keyboard for only $649. HP X360 2-in-1 - 11.6" - 4GB and 128GB HD. It has an Intel Pentium processor and has really good reviews for only $399. Sold out at many stores, which says something. Great value. Another possibility is to get a Surface Go with more memory but it seems like a better idea to spend a little more for the Surface 7 bundle. 6. If you are not using this for taxing processing like music production or gaming or video work, you don't have to spend too much because there are plenty of options out there

There is NOTHING not to LOVE about this device. It looks classy, and functions so well. I have a laptop and a desktop, so this is definitely not gonna be my primary device - however, to use it as a tablet, note taking, browsing, and watching Netflix! The 4GB ram is not as bad as people say it is. I have owned this device for a couple of days now and have been using it daily, I had no issues whatsoever. It is fast and does what you want it to do. If you are not gonna use it as a primary device, the 4GB will be perfect and you will not need the 8GB ram. Hope this helps!

The Surface Go is a great addition to the MS Surface line. It is light and super portable. Packs enough power to have several non-gaming apps open. The add-on keyboard is a must buy, but I love the way it converts to a table. In tablet mode, the screen is very responsive and touch accuracy is excellent. The pen is great in both tablet mode and regular laptop mode. The pen has many great functions is another must-have accessory for the Go. The charge for the Go is much smaller than for the Surface Pro, making that much easier to take along. Battery life during pretty heavy use is around 5 hours for me. The Surface Go is a great laptop/tablet and I look forward to seeing how this product evolve=s.
