    Favorite Secondary Device of All-time

I could not make this work as my primary computer because of my gaming needs, but the Surface Go is a wonderful secondary device. I have a Surface Book but decided I wanted something smaller to take back and forth to work everyday for note taking. The mobility of the device combined with the excellent Surface build quality makes for a fantastic note taking experience at work. I no longer feel like I'm dragging a brick to the meeting. Besides being a great secondary device, this has to be one of the best small PCs I have ever used. I love using it on my lap in my chair. I have all the productivity of a full keyboard device with none of the size or weight. In addition, the kickstand and detachable keyboard makes it great for setting on the counter or table in the kitchen when I just want to watch videos while cooking or cleaning. I didn't have high expectations when I bought it. It's Microsoft. They've made a lot of mistakes in the past with consumer devices. But this isn't one of them.

    So Far, So Good

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased this 3 days ago. I went in to look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3. Right before I went into the store, I was reviewing the Surface to go online. The sales assistant that helped me, just happened to be a Microsoft Expert. I didn't realize it at the time. I mentioned the Surface to go and he just happened to have one in his hand. He asked me what I was looking for and what I needed and proceeded to show me what the Surface can do. On his recommendation, I purchased this one, the 128gb. The sales associate didn't have any new ones, but he had a open box. I was able to purchase the Surface for $448. The pen was still $99, I got the burgundy one. I will get the keyboard and mouse at a later date, if I keep it. So far so good. I like the fact that you can sync your phone with the Surface. It's a cool feature, but I didn't like Launcher taking over my Android phone, so I unconnected it. I'm still getting to know it. I didn't have to open it up, because the previous owner did it. They also had Microsoft Home on it. I ended up purchasing MS 365 and didn't need to. Bestbuy didn't do a good job of checking the unit out. Even though it had the "Inspected" sticker on it. When I took it out the box, it was already in the middle of the set up. I didn't know I was supposed to use the pen and I tried to use my fingers. Eventually, I was able to get through it. Watching a Video was good. Sound quality was good. I do think that I might need to get some wireless speakers, if I'm going to be watching a movie. I wan't to be able to sit back and not upclose to listen; especially if I"m at home. I can use my headphones if I'm out in public. I'm still working on the battery life. I've only been doing small stuff on it. I don't play a lot of games, so having a lot of apps for games, doesn't matter to me. Bestbuy didn't offer me a service plan. I didn't realize it until two days later, when I looked at the receipt. I'm not sure if it was because it was an "open box" or if he just forgot. My school laptop has Windows, my home laptop has Windows and I have an Amazon Tablet. Amazon is limited, so that's why I wanted something a little more. I want to be able to take my homework with me; notes, powerpoints etc to work and study and not have to take either one of the laptops. I agree with one other comments about not being able to use the entire real estate as for viewing, because of the border. That's why I was looking at the tablet. I do a lot of reading. I have a Kindle Paperwhite, so I don't know if there will be any eye strain if I do a lot of reading on this. I also haven't had a chance to draw with the pen yet. I can't wait to do. If I do decided to keep it, I will need to get the keyboard and mouse and a warranty. It may be too late for the warranty but I can try. I still have time on the return. I will play with it some more.

Delightful product for the right use case

Anyone looking for a tablet-sized device that can actually do real work (creation) will be delighted by the Surface Go. I found that with an iPad, anytime I needed to do anything requiring serious input I immediately reach instead for the Go. The abiltity to use a keyboard, mouse, and real apps (not mobile versions) is really a game changer. As a travel device, the Go is essentially perfect. The size is such that I don't even know it is there, it fits perfectly in airline seat tray, and unlike other tablets it is a full PC with all the capability expected. The screen is great, the hardware is rock solid, and battery life is adequate (not outstanding). I have actually plugged it into the Surface Dock and have been using it as my primary PC. I can run multiple Chrome tabs, Slack, Dropbox, etc. I have also been able to run 2009 era Steam games without a hitch! Love it! The negatives? Not many. Obviously the screen is small for lots of work, and windows 10 on such a small screen can be fiddly. The CPU is not fast. most of the time it is fine, but it does definitely bog down at times. It eventually gets there, but there will be times I have to visibly wait for it to catch up . Still, I am thrilled with the purchase. I give it 5 stars because I wanted this form factor and it is the best device available in this size. For me it is the first tablet that can truly replace a laptop. I would give it 4 stars for anyone who needs more power (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier) as it just isn't powerful enough for that. Likewise I would give it 4 stars if someone just wants an iPad or Android tablet. While it can do more than either of those, as a pure tablet it is not as optimized for that use case.

    Awful performance

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased this Surface Go to have a device for both, entertainment and work. It is small and light and I like it a lot. But it is extremely slow. And no, I was not expecting to get high-spec machine for heavy work, but most of the time just connect to vdi, a remote powerful machine where all the actual work is done. So I was going to use it mainly as a universal device that I can easily carry around, watch Netflix, emailing and connect to the large monitor and all the accessories and use it as a terminal for work on the remote machine. But this surface itself is so inconvenient to use with unacceptable delays almost everywhere. Starting Chrome takes 10-15 seconds, websites downloading takes around 5 sec. Just awful. I decided to purchase a version with 8Gb RAM and 128 Gb SSD because reviewers were saying that this machine does work pretty well compared to 4Gb/64Gb. Well, if this is "pretty well" I guess the base model is barely usable even as a simple tablet. I was so excited to get it and have one device for everything, but so underperformance even in basic tasks is very disappointing taking into account the price around $600 together with the keyboard.

    Initial thoughts and dissapointments

I just received this today and this is what I have noted so far. I will update this as I continue to use. At this point it very well may go back. 1. There appears to be no way to turn off S mode without paying $99.00. This may be a deal changer for me. I have the upgraded unit and spending an additional $99.00 puts this right at the price of a base Surface Laptop which I can turn off S mode without a charge. 2. Updates - the unit is very sluggish as I type this due to the many updates that it is attempting to install. A little surprised at the number of updates required due to the newness and the system in S mode. 3. Keyboard. Although small it is workable, I do find myself missing the enter key every so often, but this will change. The keyboard does make more noise than expected, but I find it acceptable. This will not replace my Surface Book Pro, but may work for meeting etc, just a great size, however the S Mode may be the killer as there are applications that I MUST have that are not in the App Store. Unsure about battery life, but when I am I will update. IMHO this device should come with W10 Pro and NOT HOME. Screen appears to be great for the size, look forward to putting it through its paces. Will also update after I use the stylus. Based on what I know now, I feel the Surface Laptop base would be a better value for most. I would not recommend at this time based on what was mentioned above.

I like the build quality and the relatively quick charge times. It is much more useful and productive than my beloved Ipad Pro, which appears better suited to web-browsing, media consumption and e-mails. I found the bundle with microsoft office 365 and the keyboard cover was the most bang for buck. It is still expensive though. I would say processing power is sufficient for a snappyish experience. I got the 8gb 128ssd variant.

This is an almost perfect machine. The build is great and the size is perfect for on the go. I didn't think my expectations were that high but unfortunately it was. The only app I use outside of the Microsoft store in quick books online. The program is not very resoucre hungry but it would take literally 2 mins and 35 seconds to completely load. I was expecting longer than the 6 secs of my surface pro i5 but come on. This is a great machine for web browsing and word but at this price point it should be much more. So in short, the processor is way underpowered.

I've been waiting on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, and watching the rumors and specs for three months. I was broken hearted to learn that it is to be released with early 2017's Snapdragon 835. When I was in Bestbuy on 8/2 I saw the Surface Go and had not heard of it. The sales guy said it had the new 8th gen CPU, 2 USB-C ports and could be charged via one, a fantastic screen resolution, 10-hour battery, and a fast SSD. I bought it on his specs because one was not out and I did not have my phone to verify his claims (not an issue as it was new to both of us). When I got home I started reading and watching first day reviews. The CPU was 485 days old (early 2017) and a very slow Gold 4415Y version, one USB port, a proprietary charger like all other Surface models, very low screen resolution, and was averaging 6-7 hours battery in early tests. I never got it out of the box, and returned it next day (as I'm 35 miles from the nearest Bestbuy). I bought the 8gb Ram and 128 SSD version for $549 and the pen for $99 in addition. The keyboard was another $129. So if you go all in you'll invest $777 in what is nothing less than early 2017 technology. Come on Microsoft, UP YOUR GAME, or pass into ambiguity by the side of the roadside as Chrome and Android road kill.

I really wanted to love this device, but the fact is it doesn't meet my expectations in any way at all. The reasons I hate it are frankly too many to list but heres the high points: 1. Screen resolution- its not the worst out there but really? Ive had at least Full HD resolution and mostly Ultra HD for years now! Not having at least 1080p is pretty cheesy at this price point. 2. Processor- Its not even an I5 its a custom Pentium M that literally doesn't keep up with current cell phone offerings. 3. Operating system- Its not a full version of windows 10 and as such is extremely limited in what it can actually do.....its not that it CAN'T handle a full version, its that they want you to pay an upgrade fee once you realize it doesn't work right. Cheap and unethical IMO. If none of that scares you then the other lackluster features wont dissuade you either but at least I tried to warn you.

I bought my Surface Go a day or two after its release (I know, not a good idea). The power supply failed two weeks later so I just bit the bullet and bought another ($40). Now, I am 2.5 months into owning the tablet and I have a problem with the touchscreen being dead on the bottom 1/2 inch of the screen in landscape mode which is unfortunately where the taskbar is located. I am not a heavy user of the device and have been very careful with it. I just went online to do a return and will see how this experience plays out. If things go well and it is returned promptly with no more issues then I will update this review a bit more positively. After all, I do like the Surface Go when it is working! I have a Samsung tablet that was not all that expensive, has been heavily used and abused for 2 years that hasn't given me the slightest problem. I hope that after this I can say the same about the Surface Go.

    Surface Pro No Go

I was going to buy a Samsung Tablet. I checked the reviews vs. the Surface Pro Go. It was very highly rated. The Surface Pro Go is a no go for me. I got my first one on October 31, 2019. It did not load all the software. So I returned it for a new Pro Go. I spent a couple of hours doing the installation and had two things happen on this one. 1) The Surface Pro Go got hot to the touch. 2) The installation was going smoothly until I got a Blue Screen with an error message. It said Could not recover installation, please contact Manufacturer for service or replacement. So Samsung here I come.

The Go is truly a miniaturized version of the Surface Pro, with the same build quality and features, even a backlit keyboard. It is a big improvement over the old Surface 3. That being said, it is still painfully slow, even with the 128GB ssd.

Love most everything about this but the durability is extremely lacking. I am on the 3rd unit in 8 months. Screen cracked on the first one (was NOT dropped and had a screen protector). On to the 2nd one and the levers on the kickstand busted and came out of the hinges. Just received the 3rd one today after waiting for 3 weeks...….not very optimistic about how this one will turn out. 47 year old female using this for at home surfing...…. :(

I was dumping all my Apple products and gravitating towards Microsoft. What a mistake. First off, Microsoft was on the right track and I like the Windows OS and the use of a mouse etc. However, can this thing move any slower? It was brutal and the Pentium Chip is a joke. The thing took forever to set up and when it really came down to it, Microsoft Edge is the only browser you could use on this thing and the tablet and mouse and keyboard felt cheaply made. I returned the whole thing and I am back to the fast iPad!
