I was debating between the surface or the iPad and I'm glad that I got the surface

I've been keeping my eye out on Windows 8 and the surface from really early on. I saw the potential of where Windows 8 was going, and when the Surface was announced, I knew they were on the right track. I wasn't financially able to get the first generation of Surface, nor did I think it would be a good investment. So I waited, and I finally bought my 128GB Surface Pro 2. This device is fast. It's compact. It's productive. I use it at work almost all the time (remote desktop#, and the notetaking with the Wacom pen is great. I'm starting to develop for Windows 8.1, so having access to Visual Studio, Unity, 3D Studio Max, etc is really neat, especially on a tablet form factor. I can't undermine just how great it is to have a full PC as a tablet. Simply being able to run legacy windows games on Steam is great in and of itself. It makes older games seem so much more interesting with touch #SimCity4, Age of Empires 2 HD, Portal, etc#. The WIndows Store is sufficient for my needs and it's actually really convenient. I bought the Surface to replace my laptop, and it has gone above and beyond doing that. I now find myself just wanting to go places with the new portability, stopping by coffee shops just to show it off :P The use cases for me have changed. It has been a while since I've worked with 3D Modeling and Photoshop, so it's nice to get back into it with a bang, given the awesome Wacom tablet. Needless to say, not everything about the Surface is perfect. The sound quality is a bit muffled and strange. The fan, when running something really graphic intensive, sounds like a waterfall #calming, but it'll startle you at first#. The pen has issues with calibration upon waking up and such, but there are solutions I've found online. The lack of adequate calibration out of the box is kinda sad. But we're Windows users, we deal with it, and that makes us smarter users and problem solvers. This is my first Windows 8 device. Thus, I feel like I have merged pretty well from Windows 7, but there are some issues in regards to navigating through apps that have been problematic for me. A well designed OS doesn't leave you guessing in regards to what an action does, and Windows 8 does fall short at times #though they are improving). While the screen is great for the Windows 8 apps, the Desktop is tiny. Really tiny. I'm supposed to use this to be productive but the productive side of the Surface leaves me wanting a bit more. I'll probably invest in a monitor when Black Friday comes around to alleviate this issue, but for now it's bearable. The dock seems awesome, but I just don't think that's something I really need at this point. If you had doubts about the first generation of Surface Pro, don't hesitate about getting this. It's good for business, fun, and everyday use. There are limitations to it, but mostly you can deal with them. While the price is hefty, especially with accessories and the keyboard included, you have to realize that you are paying for both a laptop and a tablet and a drawing board. More than anything though, you will see that this device will merge with your lifestyle and at times, improve upon it. I would not recommend this product if you're a major gamer or need super intensive power. I was tempted to go up to 8GB ram but you really do feel guilty investing so much in such a small device. Lose it and everything is gone. This device is great. If you can afford it and have been on the fence about it, go buy it. If you don't like it, return it, but I doubt that you will. Peace

The ability to take my work with me and still have fun makes all the difference

I would think that the"Pro" stands for professional. That said, I find it odd that this is the version of the surface is the only one that does not come pre-loaded with Microsoft Office software. The product works well, but I am not wowed by the experience. For the price, I am guessing that the lower cost versions probably work just as well.

I would like better help on learning how to use the machine and windows 8. Confusing so far.

Microsoft surface pro 2 is a good thing for doing everything.

Unit worked great for approximately three days. Charging on unit gave issues not going above 23 percent after 8 hour charge time. Contacted MS directly and was told may be software issue. Upon completing multiple install of software as recommend by manufacture was told to send unit to MS for diagnosis.

I have only had it a week but am very happy with it so far

Love everything about it, wish I had purchased sooner.
