Just what I needed for mobile productivity!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I live in a mixed world, where my mobile devices are Android (phone, watch, and tablet) and primarily use Windows PCs for everything else. I have been familiar with Microsoft Surface products for a while now, with having a Surface Book detachable laptop for 5 years, but when detached, it can still be a little too big for portability and practical tablet use. With my higher end Android tablet (with almost daily use for the past 6 years) starting to literally fall apart at the seams (the screen adhesive is coming loose and starting to squeeze out!?!), I had decided it was time to look for a replacement. While there are newer versions of the brand of my tablet out there, I also was thinking about the available versatility I really needed. There are so many things I do and apps I use where the Android versions have some limitations, so I really started thinking how much a Windows-based tablet would ease about 70% of what I use a tablet for. The new Microsoft Surface Pro - Copilot+ PC - 12" Touch-Screen not only fits my tablet needs but also gives a nice little screen size boost (up from 10.5"). This Surface Pro is nice and thin, almost as thin as the tablet it is replacing, and has a nice weight to it. There are two USB-C ports, which can be used to connect to a monitor, directly if it happens to have USB-C DisplayPort and a supporting cable, or by using an HDMI and/or DisplayPort adapter. And of course, after all these years, the Surface Pro still has its signature built-in, fully adjustable kick stand. The Snapdragon X Plus 8-Core processor is more than capable of carrying out most tasks, especially with the 16GB DDR5 memory. And it has a Qualcomm Adreno GPU. For storage, my version has a built-in 512GB flash storage, which is a great amount, and more than some laptops come with, but no microSD slot for anything additional. And as with most mobile devices lately, it comes with a USB-C to C cable, but no charger. It can take up to a 45W charger but can use nothing less than 37W. Luckily, we already had several 45W chargers for phones and Chromebooks. The Ocean color is nice, just a slight blueish hue to it by itself, but definitely more noticeable when next to my silver Surface Book. There are two cameras, a front facing (2.1MP @16:9 or 1.6 MP @ 4:3) and rear facing (10.5MP @ 4:3 or 9.3MP @16:9). These are a about the only things I had an issue with using, where it could not take pictures using the Camera app, just displaying an error. Capturing Video was fine, but not pictures. I was able to finally get them working by turning on the "Allow multiple apps to use camera at the same time" in the Advanced Settings for each camera. But these settings will only allow for even lower resolutions for the rear camera in the Camera App. Eventually, things seem to be working fine after turning off that setting and a restart or two. But I am still seeing some occasional issues where either camera may not work right away when starting the Camera app. The only other complaints I had were software/app related, where some of the video streaming apps I normally download to watch movies during plane trips don't have the ability to download. While being a tablet is pretty good, the portable productivity increases even more when paired with the Surface Pro 12" Keyboard with Slim pen. Just connect it with the magnetic connector, then it becomes a little more of a laptop, but not a comfortable one (at least for me). The one design issue I have is with the built-in kick stand. The edges are so thin and almost pointy, which makes it fairly uncomfortable to me when sitting on my legs for extended periods of time, unless I am wearing fairly thick pants. The Slim Pen is a nice touch, with different writing/drawing to text/objects convertibility. It will even turn a drawn smiley into a smiley emoji. The Surface has a location on the top-back to store the pen via a decently strong magnet, where it also wirelessly charges it. Then when done using everything, the keyboard closes over (and helps protect) the screen and stays closed via magnets. It does give a little more bulk to it as the keyboard is almost as thick as the Surface itself, but not too bad. From pretty much right from the start, I was able to continuously use it in almost all normal situations for me. For using it for Microsoft Teams calls at work, to watching videos while traveling on a plane, to using it for running tracking web application I designed. Then being able to use it for running all the Office/Microsoft 365 applications I use, it is just much easier than on my old Android tablet. While it does have Microsoft Copilot built in (which does seem much better than the predecessor, Cortana, which I never would use), I'm still trying to get used to using it. Even with all the regular use (2-3 hours a day, and then the extra use during my trip), I am getting around 2-3 days of battery, which isn't too bad. I have it set to turn off the display after 5 minutes and go to sleep after 30 minutes. And it does seem to keep itself from getting too hot (mainly a little warmer just above and right of center when using in landscape (with from camera at the top, but not scorching), but I really didn't get to try any extreme processing, such as any video rendering. But there are no fans, so it does stay quiet when using. While there are plenty of smaller, lesser expensive (mostly Android) tablet choice out there, this "supercharged" Windows PC tablet can be the productivity enhancer (and only tablet) you need!

Versatile Tablet with Windows
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Fantastic device! It blends the best of both worlds, the iPad and the versatility of Windows. I will say, my only flag with this is don't expect optimized tablet apps. If you are using full size desktop apps, you'll be golden.

Fast, Productive, Stylish and Smart
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The surface pro is the perfect machine for productivity on the go. The keyboard and pen are excellent accessories for typing, navigating, and taking hand written notes. There’s great integration with office tools if hand writing is your preference. Pros: - The snapdragon x-plus that is at the center of performance makes for a snappy user experience. This ARM based processor is fast and power efficient. It’s design allows for a tablet style windows machine that is fanless while still having great performance. A fairly common benchmark, speedometer 3.1, netted a 30.3 score unplugged on performance mode, which I felt was impressive. I’ve been a fan of winodws on ARM with the Snapdragon processors. I think this is a good path forward for Microsoft and I’m here for it. - The design is ultra portable. The keyboard and trackpad magnetically snap to the bottom of the surface pro, and holds strong, and when folded up, acts as a cover for the screen. There’s a spot for the pen on the back which also charges the pen, also attaching magnetically. I love the blue metallic design. The tablet itself feels rock solid. There’s a power button and volume rocker on the top with 2 USB type C ports on the side. There’s a hinge that folds out acting like a kickstand of sorts, but folds nearly 180 degrees for a wide range of use, making it exceptionally useful when using the pen to take notes or draw. I also really like the feel of the keyboard and trackpad. The keys have a smooth soft touch feel to them and the bottom has a soft felt like texture so you don’t feel like you’ll scratch the table when laying it down. - Co-Pilot is something I’ve been sleeping on. If you’re like me and not quite sure how co-pilot can fit into your routine, there’s a few YouTube videos that I found useful. A few take aways was the ability to summarize videos and articles you’re looking up. For example, if you’re looking to buy a new set of pots and you’re watching review videos, you can have Co-Pilot to summarize the video, so you can quickly read the details. I’ve also used Copilot to find deals on the internet for items I’m shopping for which was very useful. I know after using on this device, I’m going to look for more ways to work this in to my routine. - The pen and keyboard attachment is what brings this tablet full circle. While there is plenty of utility using the touch screen, I feel like windows is best used with mouse and keyboard input. The keyboard is easy to type on, is large enough that my fingers don’t feel cramped and the trackpad feels and works well enough and has good proportions in relation to the rest of the device. Being backlit is helpful for seeing the keys in a dim lit room. The pen writes well and I’ve used it to take some hand written notes and it does well with pressure sensitivity. I’m terrible at sketching or drawing, but I played around in paint and it was fun seeing how the different pressures change the draw lines. - Battery Life has been great. I’ve been using it on max brightness and best performance all morning, mostly in office aps and browsing the internet, and I’m down to 65%. - Windows Hello with Face Recognition. Every modern windows device that can have this should have this. - The speakers are surprisingly loud. They sound good to be coming from a small device. I wouldn’t use this as my main music device, but I wouldn’t mind if it was what was handy. Cons - I don’t think windows is quite ready for the tablet form factor. While there was a lot of functionality with web browsing and navigating by touch, the icons could be a bit bigger in some of the menus. I had a difficult time navigating through menus and settings the way I normally would with a mouse and keyboard. - Screen brightness could be a bit brighter. In a dim room it does great, but outdoors there’s a bit to be desired. I noticed this in HDR content as well as it didn’t quite have the contrast you get with a brighter screen. Other thoughts - ARM on windows is making a comeback thanks to the snapdragon processor. While I haven’t ran into any compatibility issues or bugs, other applications could, so be aware of that. - The kickstand works well but Microsoft might consider making it slightly more rounded so it doesn’t feel as harsh on the lap or hand. - I felt the cameras and ports were ok. I did like how bright the front camera made me in a dim room, since this will likely be the one most will use for video calls. I’ve been throwing this device in my backpack and taking it to work with me. It’s been great for catching up on news, checking personal emails, and updating my budget in excel. At home, I spend way too much time on YouTube. I found that if I’m in the middle of a video but need to attend to something in a different room, I will take this with me, where my other laptops, get closed and put away, for the video to be resumed later. I think anyone looking for a premium design, ultra portability with great battery life, full size keyboard with a responsive touch screen, they’ll love the Surface Pro. If you travel or bounce conference room to conference room but still need a powerful laptop for work, this is easy to recommend.
