A good start on a long journey

I started my journey in home automation last year with a home mini in the kitchen. It worked great with my Hue, and harmony remotes. Saying "good morning" got my reports and I could cast directly to my Sony TV and being in the kitchen, its great for setting timers. When I saw the hub, I thought, great! Now I can do recipes. I also got a number of home mini's so i could use the broadcast feature. This device could be excellent. The picture screensaver is great as its integraded into your google pics. But here are my gripes. 1 it constanly looses internet, there is an Access Point in the next room, and the mini never had connectivity issues, but I find myself regularly rebooting the thing. It is also considerably quieter than a mini. Most of the tine this isn't an issue, but sometimes you want to hear things over the drone of kitchen appliances. This device fails at that. Finally, the microphone is mediocre at best. When I call out to google in the living room,. Half the time, my bedroom on the second floor responds. I think I am going to get a mini to sit next to the hub so I can get the best of both worlds.

It’s like 50% ready for prime time

Compared to Alexa: (1) home hub doesn’t show the time at night (the “ambient light sensor” turns the screen 100% black) (2) can’t call a specific room (3) can’t play a song without blabbering for a minute about every artist and service involved (4) can’t set family reminders that go off for everyone (5) the hub devices can’t hear anyone speak well (6) google can’t play popular songs like the Lion King (featured in their own commercials) without manual intervention otherwise they play knockoffs (7) will only play white noise for an hour unless specified (8) don’t have a quiet mode so if you ask something at night have to listen to it scream across your house nonsense like “this is what white noise sounds like” (9) assistant only sometimes connects to the devices and when it does it can’t even perform the same tasks (eg play white noise) (10) Hub doesn’t display the time if the hub is doing anything besides nothing which makes it a terrible bedside device -even white noise turns off the clock which is stupid by every measure

Powerful gadget. have a lot of fun with it. I saw reviews where people are saying the speaker is not loud enough. I think is more than enough. I love this piece of technology. PS sometimes you have to say "Hey/OK Google" more than once.

Keep in consideration this device is still beta and there’s a lot of development to be done yet but for what it can do at the moment is phenomenal.

Worked amazingly in the early days, but over the past couple of years the quality has degraded month-to-month. The Google Assistant fails to work as advertised more often than not. It’s as though Google has abandoned this product line. We would have never invested so much into Google for our smart home had we known things would get this bad.

Works great for the Nest doorbell but the sound is lacking hence the 4 stars. Also can watch YouTube TV right on it.

    Really want to love it...

Purchased the google hub because I liked the Lenovo Smart display in the kitchen and figured this would work out great in the bedroom. Well after a week of flawless operation everyday when I get home from work it is on the setup screen. If I just unplug it and plug it back in it works fine until the next day. It seems to be loosing it's internet connection but the Lenovo and my Alexa displays never act up so there is no problem with my internet. I may take advantage of B-Buys 14 day return.

    Don't buy for recipe capability

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased this device for use in the kitchen since I thought it would be a convenient way to view recipes without needing to have a tablet or phone in the kitchen. The device has MANY limitations in this regard. For instance: 1. You cannot load your own recipes into the device. You can only use recipes from Google's "certified partners". 2. You can copy the recipes from the "certified partners" into your own cookbook, but there is no way to search that cookbook for the recipe unless you know the exact name of the recipe. (Hmmm...what that recipe called "Savory Parmesan Chicken" or was it "Tasty Parmesan Chicken") 3. The device has voice-recognition capability, which would seem to be nice, but if I load recipes into my cookbook, and my wife loads recipes into her cookbook...we can't see each other's saved recipes. I can only see my saved recipes, and she can only saved hers. There's no way to share recipes across members of the same household through the Nest Hub. Not ready for prime time in the kitchen.

Underwhelming product, iOS device users beware

I purchased this product mostly to use in my kitchen to look at recipes while I’m cooking and to play some music. Well the product can access recipes if you ask for them. You can’t access your own recipes if you have them stored on Google documents or Google Drive or any other source for documents. That’s rather disappointing. I also had difficulty activating the six-month YouTube premium service. Apparently this is only available through android devices.

    Disappointed

My husband purchased this for me for Christmas after being told by a Best Buy team member that I could use it to watch TV, play Netflix, Hulu, etc, as well as make video calls. They were completely wrong. The only thing you can watch are the big news channels but no local ones. You also cannot make video calls. I have talked to customer service people at Google and they told me that these are features the company is working on but at this time they are not usable features and there is no slated time frame to be able to make video calls or watch regular shows on the hub. The accessories such as the The Nest Thermostat are so expensive, I will not spend the money on them. This thing just basically sits on my counter and takes up room. The only thing we use it for is for my 5 yr old to ask what the weather is today. The recipe option is difficult because it will read the first step in the instructions to you but for the next step you actually have to touch the screen, which means I have to wash my hands in between each step if I have cooking ingredients on my hands. I have skin issues and washing my hands even 30 seconds makes them worse. If he were given accurate information, he would have just purchased a TV for me instead.

    Assistant that doesn't assist

Terrible assistant. Doesn't recognize my voice ever, wrong devices respond and often do the wrong thing. Doesn't work to find my phone or add any value to my life other than asking what the weather is and the occasional math equation.

    fine for basic functions

Google is looking to get your very last dime. If you want to play a specific song you must pay for YouTube premium. Stream a radio station and it only plays for about 15 minutes. That's the most basic it'll do. The Mini will take certain directions but doesn't really interface well with the Hub and you have to go to the Hub to do most things. After a while you get sick of hearing "I don't know how to do that." or "I'm still learning". i.e. I tell the mini to turn on the kitchen light (it's a night light plugged into a smart plug). It'll tell me "I don't know what light you mean" so I go to the Hub and say the exact same thing and the kitchen light comes on. Then I tell the mini to turn off the kitchen light and it does. Does it all of a sudden now know what the "kitchen light" means? This type of disconnect between Hub and Mini happens quite often. I'm starting to believe that even though Alexa can't do all the things that the Google Hub can do that for my needs Alexa may be the better choice.

      Hello HolyMoly,

We appreciate you for sharing your experience with us. We're sorry to hear that you are encountering some issues with your Google Nest Devices.

There may be several reasons for such inconveniences. Google Nest speakers and displays support some streaming platforms, but such platforms may still require paid subscriptions for their services or certain content.

If your Nest Mini and Nest Hub are not synced together, please check on the Google Home app to see if they are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, the same permissions, and are grouped in the same home structure. You can also factory reset your Nest Mini and set it up on the same network as your Nest Hub and other connected devices, making sure it has all the permissions to control your connected devices.

If you still encounter such issues, you can always reach out to us for further troubleshooting here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/contactflow Nest
