Simple switch, not alot of overhead

I am using this as the primary network node for a pfSense router/firewall. I just plugged it in and hooked up my cables and it was good to go. It is super compact, can be ran directly off of 12vDC and has a lifetime warranty. Also I do like the fact that each port has LEDs to indicate activity and Gigabit vs. a 10 or 100 Mbps connection. It is easy to tell what network or machine is talking. Another thing is that I have seen these switches operate outside in the heat of day in Iraq with 120 degree weather, although it is recommended to place these in a cool room. The switch is also power efficient only consuming 12 watts. I was also able to get a 20ms ping with my pfSense machine and the switch hooked up with only 2ms jitter.

Did not work for what we needed it for. Netgear needs to step up cause the competitors are way better.

I bought the gs105 to increase the bandwidth on my home network for streaming video files to my media center pc. | As with all of the netgear products, their construction is far superior to any other brand of consumer network hardware. The case is made out of metal, and is very solid, and is attractive to me because netgear puts fuction over form. | The setup couldn't have been simpler, from opening the box to running a test transfer to check for speed took less than a minute. Also, the AC adaptor is designed so it won't take up more than one plug on a power strip. | I decided to check how much it improved the network speed, so I did a file transfer test on my 100mbps switch before I installed the gigabit switch and here are the results: | File Size: 733,949,952 bytes ( ~716 mb) | netgear fr114p 10/100 mbps prosafe firewall/router: 8831.5 kb/s 83.1 Seconds | netgear gs105 gigabit ethernet switch: 32696.9 kb/s 22.4 Sec | At this point the speed bottleneck changes from the network media to the hard drive transfer rate, as one of the computers used in the test has PATA hard drives.

I've installed several of these for use in various small office (8-12 users) and home office setups over the past 2 years, and I haven't had any issue with any of them to date. They're a perfect small size, easy to install, and most importantly, they just work.

    Netgear switches never disappoint

I use these switches all the time. Very easy to install, reliable and durable. When using them in a closed or IDF closet they're great but in a SMB where sometime you don't have that luxury and the switch ends up on a nearby desk, the ports on the back would be nice. I know I could get other switched with the ports on the back but they're made with cheap plastic and look all stylish in case they end up in a living room. I like the metal casing this unit has.

Works just how I imagined it would, basically extended my single port router to a 4 port router. Would buy again if needed.

    Awesome product

I purchased this 5-port gigabit switch awhile ago and works beautifully. Very impressive build. The unit has a metallic case instead of plastic. And the unit has a passive cooling system which makes it very quiet compared to some other gigabit switches that have fans built into them. I have both the 5-port gigabit and the 8-port gigabit switches being used on my home network. No software needed, just plug and play and forget about it. I would definitely recommend this product to my friends and any other person asking on which switch is worthy for their hard-earned money.

I purchased this to resolve the problem of too many wired internet devices in my home office / home. Problem solved. Set up was very easy and required no special adjustments or configuration of equipment. Happy with speed. Haven't had to make any adjustments since the initial installation about a month ago.

There is not a whole lot to say, it's just to switch, you know. Anyway, it works great and was really easy to add to my network. I have had several Netgear products over the last years and there are very reliable. Overall, it's a good product.
