It is good, but not what I need
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a good router but it is not what I need. I have an abnormal house lay out, and the internet range on the far end of my house is still slow so I got a wifi mesh instead.

Decent router
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Decent router, software could be better. Graphical map of the network would be a nice touch as well as a full list of everything on the network, not just a truncated one.

You may need a range extender,
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have no issue with the amount of wireless devices that run with no lag. I did expect the range to be better than it is.

Awesome Router

Tech up
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Time to stop renting a sub optimal router and look to the future with the latest tech. I won't save any money, but will have a much better router.

WiFi 6 Router
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When it works, it’s great. Have been having to restart the router every couple of days due to it dropping the 2.4 or 5 GHz bands. May be a setting I missed.

Constantly dropping connection!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this router to upgrade my XR500. Hooked it up with no problem at all just like my prior router. Went to test my speeds and they would constantly keep dropping down. I currently have Gig internet and my speeds kept dropping down to 200 and at some times it dropped to 5. I had constant trouble connecting to pages and the internet would completely dropped out. Had the router for about 24 hours and had to return it. Went back to the XR500 and haven’t had problems.

Overkill replacement for your carrier's WiFi

I continue to love all iterations of the Nighthawk
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So, let’s chat like we’re friends (I.e. my review is suffering from quarantine fever and I talk a lot.) about the Nighthawk AX5400. The router itself is crazy easy to install. It’s pretty much just plug-n-play and you don’t even need to turn your computer on to install it. You just do everything on the Nighthawk app, which I like. What I don’t like is that the app is unusually slow to start, to load - even when you click on a push notification, it takes a comparatively long time to open up and show your potential threat. I think that if you’re going to make everything app-based, then the app should be better. (Quick aside - you can still you routerlogin.net if you prefer, so if setting everything up with the app gives you hives, you’re still good.) I’ve had plenty of time to observe the app having had a full knee replacement right before a global pandemic hit. So. I’ve been home. All the time. For months. Since February. It took me a little longer than I expected to install the router because first I couldn’t get on the floor and when I could finally do that, I couldn’t get off of it, so it stayed boxed up for longer than I anticipated. Like all bright-eyed, hopeful young things, I thought I was gonna be like the older people in my doctor’s office ready to go jogging in a few weeks. Pro-tip for all of you out there: this is the one time being young does not benefit you post-surgery. Still worth it, though. Now if you’ll kindly excuse my tangent into the realm of knee-replacement-did-not-work-like-I-expected-and-it-really-hurts-but-would-still-recommend 10/10, I’ll get back to what you really came to look at, which is a review of this router. So, app problems aside, it’s been really reliable. I never to need to constantly reset it when the internet goes all fussy, although handily, I can do it from the app if I’m so inclined (I’m generally not because I do the full modem/router hard reset, but I do appreciate the option). It’s impossible to say whether or not or it affects overall speed or connectivity, unfortunately. Comcast has been choking internet speed since the pandemic started (i.e. since I set it up) plus there’s just more traffic, in general, because so many people are working from home. My general experience with various makes of Nighthawks has been that they don’t hinder connectivity and they give me a nice boost in speed compared to, say, the modem Comcast/Xfinity/whatever they call themselves these days tries to foist on me. The coverage is still fantastic and consistent, though. That much I can tell you. If the speed sucks, it sucks in all of the rooms. So, tl;dr, any possible effect on internet speed is impossible to judge because Comcast is choking it and more people are home using it. One of those people happens to be my father and this is where I really, really love this router. For reasons beyond my control, I am quarantined with my 64 year-old belligerently anti-learning-anything-tech father. He’s better than some, but his idea of tech support is still calling me to do it for him and refusing to let me teach him anything. As you can imagine, I’m not a big fan of him using my network on this extended basis. (Yes, this still has the option for a Guest network, but he’s living in my house for now, so.) Pretty much every alert I get is from his phone or his laptop and I don’t even want to know. I’m just glad I have this there, stopping him from destroying himself and potentially my network. On that note, this does pull up some weird false positives, though. It keeps flagging my local vacuum shop’s webpage as a phishing scam and it’s…not. It’s their real, honest-to-god legitimate website and I have no problem opening it on my phone where it is not flagged as a threat. Well, I take it back. I literally just went and checked it as I was writing this and it’s no longer flagging it. Same website, same everything - just a bizarre false flag, but that is something worth knowing about, I think. There’s the potential for false flagging, but it seems like it’s very rare and it also seems to resolve itself, presumably with firmware updates. Having Bitdefender and Netgear’s own Armor is still reassuring, though, so this is just a minor quibble. I don’t want to get too technical because I feel like most people reading the reviews are really here to find out about coverage (excellent, I’ve always got full bars), speed (excellent so far as I can tell), connectivity (excellent; the only time I get chucked off is when Comcast throws a tantrum and even a direct wired connection won’t work), and reliability (excellent. I should mention here that I’m halfway to building my smart house, piece by piece, and even when Comcast quits me, I can still adjust my thermostat or my lights, in bed, using my phone. Basically, anything that just needs the router and not the internet connection stays on network.) What else? It’s a little pricey, but, to me, what it brings to the table justifies the price. As I said, I’m slowly putting together a house where I can do everything without ever leaving my bed and reliability and connectivity are so important for that. I stream pretty much everything, I love to game, both computer and console, so speed and connectivity are paramount to me, and honestly, I’m just online a lot. I still think the app should be better than it is since Netgear is pushing it like they are. It’s not bad at all when you finally get it to open, but getting it to open and connect while your router is ten feet away should not be this hard or take this long. I know it seems like a really small thing to harp on, but compared to the rest of my experience with this router, it just stands out a lot. Even so, I’d still recommend the product because I think it’s worth it overall. I’m still taking a half star off for that app, though. I just said it, but the issue is so noticeable compared to everything else that it needs to be remarked on. Okay, I take it back. Best Buy won’t let me take half a star off, so let’a just pretend I did and give this 4.5 out 5. I’m part of Netgear’s test and review program. I get the product, I test the product, I write an honest review where I complain a lot about the Nighthawk app even though I still like the overall product.
