The speed, features, and security you want

SPEED. RANGE. SECURITY. That sums up the big three features you get here, among many others. SPEED is amazing. In the same room withing 10 feet line of sight Wi-Fi connection is an amazing 2.1Gbps, more than twice that of a Network cable. Forty feet out with two walls and the connection is rate is especially amazing at 1.4 Gbps. Amazingly still a faster connection than a cable. My earlier routers typically drop their connection speed by more than half, and none reached this speed when in the same room, much less with a wall or two in between. RANGE is remarkable. I can stream video and surf the web anywhere in my house, through 4 walls, vents, wiring, plumbing, and on another floor. Speed is still over 100Mbps in the worst possible spot of my house without any extender. I have a Netgear EX8000 Mesh Extender, which I really needed with old Netgear X10 router. While I get good speed at the far end of my house, the extender supplies a switch where I have two printers and some other items wired in. SECURITY goes beyond the basics. The AXE7800 has several features. • SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) Firewall is standard on most routers. • DDoS (Distributed Denial-Of-Service) protection is a step up from DoS protection and should be expected at this price range. • A Guest network can be setup to keep devices with your personal data secure on a separate network from guests, and/or potentially less secure IoT devices which is what I mainly use it for. Not all routers offer this. • WPA3 support included for the latest Wi-Fi security protocol. • Most security incidents on home routers are the result of outdated firmware with known vulnerabilities. To protect from this, the router has an automatic firmware update feature to keep the router current. • Parental Controls are included that help manage your kids time and accessibility online. • NETGEAR Armor is like having an Antivirus Server on your home network. It scans and provides protection for all devices from malware, including that may not be capable of running anti-virus software such as printers, personal assistants, media streaming devices, game consoles, IP Cameras, etc. Bitdefender has been the top Antivirus product for the a few years now. The trial and subscription come with a Bitdefender Antivirus you can install on all your computers. Bitdefender has been among the top scoring Antivirus products for home and business for a few years now. With all the threats out there today using printers, IoT, and other such non-computer devices to get a foothold into your home, Netgear Armor or a similar security device is becoming essential at protecting your data and network communications. Netgear Armor will let me retire my dedicated security appliance, saving power and returning shelf space. I already have Bitdefender working well on my Windows 10/11 computers from another subscription directly with Bitdefender, but the Netgear Armor software does not recognize it and recommends installing its Bitdefender. A new install with the new subscription should resolve it. There are 4 1GbE ports available. The router supports linking two of these ports into an aggregated 2Gbs port. Useful for a high bandwidth device like a NAS or computer with a shared drive. This router is looking toward the future with two Internet ports; one 1Gbps port for today, and a second 2.5Gbps Multi-Gig LAN/Internet port for the next big jump in Internet speed. You can setup separate 2.4, 5, and 6 Ghz Wi-Fi networks with their own SSID’s, or a single name combining them all to allow clients to connect at their best speed. A USB 3.0 Type-C jack is on the back of the router. Plug an external USB drive in and the router can use it as a DLNA media server or as a Network Attached Storage to store/share files. While most Wi-Fi routers have enough antennas to make a porcupine blush, but the AXE7800 will make Manta Rays and Tie Fighter Pilots take a second look. It does look sleeker, is so much easier to dust and clean without breaking a fragile antenna. There is no need to move or tilt numerous antennas to tweak the coverage area. Inside each of the side wings are three antennas, six total, optimized to provide the best coverage and performance. I have the router in the back corner of my house, and it covered everything well where my earlier routers did not. It has the strongest signal I’ve ever come across. The router can be initially setup and managed from the Netgear Nighthawk App. For many people looking for basic functionality combined with some of the best speeds available, it may be enough, at least initially. But when you spend this much to get such a full featured router, you typically want more than the basics. Or the day comes when you need more. The AXE7800 dies not disappoint here. There are many more parameters and features available in the Web Browser interface you can fine tune to optimize the router to meet your needs. The AXE7800 router is one of the most powerful Wi-Fi routers I have used. With support for the latest protocols, it’s one of the fastest. It provided me with higher speeds though multiple walls and on other floors than any other router I have used yet, including other Wi-Fi 6 routers from other name brands. It has several thoughtful security features. The integration of Bitdefender in Netgear Armor is very welcome here and will go far to keep every device on your home network secure.

After having this for 2 months, I can say don’t get this one. This router loses the internet regularly. I have to restart this router often to get the internet back on but the problem is intermittent so having it repaired is a nightmare. Check your internet connection it says. I should have checked my brain when buying this. Ugh.

So not be fooled this unit does not cover 2500 square feet multi level as it depicts. 2.4 goes upstairs in my home a distance of 50 feet with only 2 wifi bars. 5.0 and 6.0 do not go to the same spot.

This router worked okay for the first three months, though I was seeing intermittent disconnections. I decided to upgrade my ISP speed from 400 Mb/s to 1Gb/s. The wireless speeds are about the same, 400mb/s, as I was seeing prior to my speed upgrade to 1Gb/s. I had my ISP come out and verify that they were seeing expected speeds from their side, which they were, so I called Netgear. They told me that I had visited too many "insecure websites" causing a security issue with the router. They wanted me to pay $139 for 5 years or $299 for the life of the router to resolve the security issue and "hide my IP to prevent it from happening again." Never again Netgear.

    Excellent router with problematic install

My experience includes setting up over 30 routers and this one was the most exasperating. The instructions basically say to download the app and then follow the instructions. The app and the router connected but kept saying no internet available. So I tried several things including powering off the modem and router, trying a different port, etc… Then I connected via laptop and went on the internet to setup. What a pain. It finally connected. On the Netgear website they do have a detailed instruction manual that could prove helpful if you run into trouble or are a novice at router installation. FYI - There is a power button the back of the router you will need to push in. You can use the same SSID, same password, and same security settings you used on your old router on your new router so you don’t have to update every device. We connect so many devices (30+) in our house with multiple TV’s, phones, printers, vacuums, voice assistants, etc… Our house is a split level and range was good except on one side of the lower level (farthest away from the router). Speed was very good to excellent but we did have some evening slowdown; I suspect the internet provider of throttling as it happened with the previous modem and router too. Speeds were up to par with our internet service level and only slightly dimished (by about 10%) when 20 devices were operating at once. I did run 2 robot vacuums, 3 TV’s, 3 computers and 2 printers (big print jobs) at once along with phones, voice assistants and air purifiers and that produced the most lag (25%). Some product highlights: USB-C 3.0 port One 2.5G and five Gigabit Ethernet ports Tri-band 2.4GHz, 5GHz, 6GHz wireless frequencies (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax compliant) – very nice to have the 2.4GHz as a lot of electronics can only connect at this frequency Eight Wi-Fi streams (2 @ 2.4GHz, 4 @ 5GHz, 2 @ 6GHz) Link 2 Gigabit LAN Ports together for up to 2Gbps aggregate speeds. Devices connected to the 2.4GHz network and can be moved to 5GHz easily. Built in security with VPN support, SPI Firewall, Device Access Control and Guest Network. Netgear Armor is included with a free 30 day trial. Upgraded Parental controls are also available at an additional cost. I wasn’t able to test 6GHZ as we don’t have any devices capable of 6GHz. It might be beneficial to wall mount the unit as it is large and you cannot see the status lights from the front of the unit. The setup process definitely takes off 1 star. Otherwise, this is a very capable router with excellent speed. On the lower level, all of our devices can run at 5GHz except two. That really helped with speed as 2.4GHz can be slow on that level. Our vacuum was having issues connecting at 2.4GHz. We have used mesh networks and wi-fi extenders to help with our lower level before so this is not a new issue for us. I do recommend this router. If you have more than 2500 s.f., you may want to upgrade to another Nighthawk. The design is also nice, the antennas are built into the design so you don’t have antennas bending all over.

2 stars because when itnqorks its great. I jave similar issues to others where whenever the power goes out or the internet goes out from the isp this router has major issues receiving a connection from the modem. Confirmed it is this router because my old router from linksys works just fine. This has happened multiple times. I hope netgear can get to the bottom of this and release a fix via firmware update. It really makes this router unusable.

Failure of LAN ports after 11 weeks of use. Netgear's policy to replace this faulty unit is three choices, 1st send your faulty unit back to Netgear when they receive it they will send you a replacement, this is unacceptable as this is equipment I rely on. The second option is to pay $16.95 (in Oregon) to have a replacement sent which includes a return shipping label for the faulty unit, if Netgear does not receive the faulty unit in 10 days after receipt, they threaten to use your credit card information to bill you for the new unit, I chose this option and four days later received a phone call request to provide proof of purchase, which the first customer service rep did not inform me of. I was not informed of this because the printed policy says proof of purchase is required for the third option. The 3rd option is pay more ship faster.

At first this was a great buy. Right before 3 months after starting use this had a serious problem. I began working with Netgear to diagnose and correct said problem. After that time the original problem was somewhat corrected but another problem arose. It took 3 months and many times of submitting error logs to get an outcome. In the process I also purchased the 3 year support item/warranty. I was informed that my product would not be replaced and so far no compensation. I do not recommend this product to anyone.

My expensive RAXE300 Nighthawk AXE6 AXE7800 stopped working from the blue. I was not prepared to stay for an hour on the phone troubleshooting. NETGEAR warranty will cover for the defective hardware, but I may have to pay for shipping the defective hardware back to NETGEAR. Once NETGEAR receives the defective router, they will send a new one to my address. So, it will take days maybe weeks to get a new router. It is just a poor warranty policy. BTW, the representative asked me to consider that it is rare for an equipment to present problems, so that is why their warranty is as it is...
