    NETGEAR are awful - AVOID

NETGEAR have the worst customer support. While this is top notch hardware, there are significant problems that you may encounter with your ISP - and Netgear do not work with you to resolve them fully. They will tell you to download the latest firmware manually and then try to reset the router, change to AP mode. They will tell you that 10 times but not acknowledge or admit that the unit does not work well with all ISPs. Furthermore, whatever you do, do not subscribe for additional services. Unlike Amazon or Apple, where the customer is king, and right, Netgear support have terrible user support data and are constantly giving you the run around rather than simply admitting they messed up and offering a refund.

    # Best Buy Review: NETGEAR Orbing AX6000 Tri-band Mesh Wifi 6 I was given this unit as part of NETGEAR's First Look Review program in exchange for an unbiased and honest review. My previous setup was all Ubiquiti Unifi gear: a USG, 8 port Unifi Switch and 2 AP-AC-Pros hardwired to the switch and using POE. This setup has been rock solid for me and I’ve never had an issue across the last 2-3 years of heavy use. I work from home and routinely deal with large data transfers (100+ MB) and every TV in our home is either a Roku TV or has a Roku stick attached to it. One of the TVs is a new 4K model as well, so at times it will utilize more bandwidth than the rest. All that to say, I’ve been very happy with the Ubiquiti setup, but I do remember having to put in quite a bit of time to get it where it all worked (more on this in a bit). When the package first arrived, it was well packaged and protected. The contents were easy to retrieve and the first thing I noticed was how similar the two units look. Luckily, each unit is labeled - one as “Router”, the other as “Satellite” which was obviously helpful. Size wise, these are a bit large. They are obviously made to sit on top of a desk, table, counter, etc. but do not expect them to go unnoticed. They are quite tall and white they’re not unattractive for tech gear, they’re going to stand out a bit if they’re on a surface without other modern tech gear. Installation was extremely easy. I plugged the units in and then had to reset my modem, after which I was able to connect to the system after my browser automatically redirected me to a setup portal. I didn’t do anything fancy, but did set the SSID to match my previous setup. Within a few minutes, the Orbi finished its setup process and I was good to go. I spent some time navigating the controls, both in the web UI and the iPhone app. Both are easy to navigate, but don’t give the depth of control of my previous Ubiquiti system. After a week or so of use, I never had a single issue. Our home is around 3,000 square feet with an upstairs and having one unit downstairs at the front of the house and another at the back of the house, also downstairs, seemed to cover us fine. My children use the 2nd floor TV to watch movies and never had any issues and across the first floor, I was able to work daily throughout the house with no problems at all. One very nice thing with the Orbi is cable management - there just aren’t many to manage. With my my Ubiquiti set up, there were cables all over - modem into USG, USG into Switch, Controller dongle hanging off of the switch and at least 2 cables coming out of the switch and running to my hardwired AP-AC-PRO units. With the Orbi, I have a cable from the modem to the Orbi and that is it. With all of that said, once I had put it through its paces a bit, I decided to set the Ubiquiti gear back in place - after all, I hadn’t spent the money and done the setup just to take it all down. This was when I really started to give some praise to the Orbi setup. After finally removing the Orbi router (1-2 minutes) and getting my Ubiquiti gear back in place, connected and started up (10+ minutes), I found myself completely locked out of my Unifi system. I was finally able to reset my controller to control the system, but adding pieces back was problematic because they were all still managed by the old controller, which I had been locked out of and reset. Finally, after managing to reset all of the pieces of the system, readopt them to the new controller and get things up and running, I was back in the place I was before. But this wasn’t the same 10 minute process of setting up the Orbi. This took me most of a morning due to all the headaches I ran into. Even after this, I noticed my laptop was having decent, but not great throughput on speed tests. With the Orbi, my laptop and phone were continuously hitting the 200Mbps mark which is more than we actually pay for, so I’m guessing the limitations were on the service side of the modem and not our own. Once I had the Unifi system back in place, my phone would hit the same limitations, but my laptop struggled to pull more than 60mbps. I actually went back through the process of removing all of the Unifi gear and set the Orbi up again and my laptop was back to the 200+ mark. That leads me to my concluding thoughts which are this - I have no doubt the issues limiting my laptop speeds were a case of user settings on the Ubiquiti system, just as it was user error and a lack of backup card that led me to being locked out of my own system in the first place. Either way, at the end of the day those were headaches I would have liked to avoid. So ultimately, here are some quick pro/cons for me on the Orbi - at least when compared to my existing Ubiquiti Unifi setup: Pros * Easy set up. Plug it in, turn it on, reset the modem and you should be good to go * Controls are easy to use (web and iOS App) * Performance seems to be fantastic * chord footprint * no backhaul or ethernet to run to satellite Cons * Nowhere near the depth of control that a system like the Unifi has * physical footprint - these are large and not as easy to stow away in a nice little shelf as some other network equipment * At the time of this writing, you cannot purchase additional satellites which would be potentially problematic if you wanted/needed to expand beyond the base system * Price: This is very steep price tag for a unit that, as I mentioned, has one satellite and the router. While that does seem to cover a large area, it is still a hefty price for a system that doesn’t give you the in depth control, customizability and modularity of other highly priced setups. My buying advice would be as follows: If you want a super performant mesh in a “set it and forget it” level of complexity/control and have the money to spend, this system is fantastic. If you want more individual control over the pieces in your system (things like individual power settings on access points, port level details on switches, etc.) and want to be able to grow your system and adapt it to more complicated use cases AND are ready to take on the headaches those systems can bring, you probably would be better off going with one of the other systems out there.

Bought a new home & lost an Orbi satellite in the move so I figured I would upgrade to the newest / fastest model. Set up was clunky & the system was very unstable. My signal would cycle offline 3x a day rendering my network unusable vía wifi. 3 calls to customer service led me to just returning the product. Buying a replacement satellite & hoping for better results.
