A few users noted some app-related issues and compatibility challenges with certain devices.

Best WiFi Solution Available - But Not For Novices

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Let me just start off with the conclusion: this is hands down the best WiFi solution for a larger home. I would also go as far to say that it is the best WiFi solution for ANY home. OK, that out of the way. I'm an above average techie user with cable modem, static IP and 100 Mbps connection. I have a larger home (about 7500 sqft) that has upstairs bedrooms, main floor and a larger basement. We also have a back patio with pool. I have struggled mightily with WiFi issues for years. Most of the basement is a dead zone. One of the upstairs bedrooms, the master bath on the first floor, and the back pool area too. I have tried at least 4 routers. I have also tried extenders. No router could cover the house. Extenders constantly cause devices to lose connection, are noticeably slower, and they go offline frequently. As my kids get older and our house becomes more connected (over 40 devices connected), this was becoming a major problem. The tipping point was a recent firmware upgrade for my current router. It reduced range and speed (stereotypical downgrade). several devices lost WiFi. I had been researching MESH systems for over a year, and even tried one. It was the Luma system. Luma was a total failure. It exposed the 2 greatest issues that MESH presents for savvy users: limited ability to modify network specs and the range limitation of the satellites to the main router. Luma didn't allow for setup using a static IP, which I have. I bypassed that to test the range and it was too far to put a sat in the basement. I didn't consider another MESH system until a friend pointed this one out. It is a MESH system, but it solves all the previous issues I had. Although it is setup out of the box (it even has a unique SSID and password) for newbies, it does offer a full web browser router interface. Static IP, port forwarding, MU-MIMO... Everything. Even better, for those pesky areas that are too far for the satellite range, it offers an alternative. You can plug an ethernet connection into the sat and it works seamlessly, kind of like an access point! No configuration necessary. It connects and functions just like any other wireless sats! Since I have ethernet lines running to my entertainment systems upstairs and in the basement, this could spread the WiFi now! So this was amazing. The router on my main floor had LAN ports for all my wired needs. After setting it up, I used a wired connection to the basement sat but the other 2 were wireless. I now have blazing WiFi speeds throughout my house. That includes outside in the yard and by the pool. Although I didn't test data throughput like the reviews, I tested real world internet speed. My connection is 100 Mbps, but I usually get around 120 Mbps. I get a solid 100-120 Mbps everywhere on the first floor and second floor. The lowest indoor speed is the farthest room in the basement from the basement sat. It was still about 70 Mbps. Outside, in the farthest area of my yard around the pool it was still 40-50 Mbps. So those are real numbers to consider. I love the monitoring apps it provides too. It's a little confusing though. There is an Orbi app that is the controller app, an Orbi Genie app that seems like a light router interface and a Disney Circle app for enhanced parental controls. I'll use the Orbi and Circle apps routinely, but the Genie app is worthless. Just put a link to your router on your web browser and enable remote access. I did play around with the router settings and if you need any advanced features, they are there. I set up my static IP with no problems. As for why I deducted a star, it was for the setup. Yes it's ready to go out of the box, but the firmware was not up to date. The Orbi app said it was, but I knew it was not from the Netgear website. Plus, in order to enable the wired sat connection, you need the newest firmware. So I had to manually install the firmware. It was actually 2 different files, 1 for the router and 1 for the 3 sats. Then I had to install it on each 1 at a time. Definitely a pain. Probably easy to mess up, and definitely not described on the official literature. I never write reviews, but felt compelled to write this one because I have struggled for so long (at great dollar expense) trying to deal with WiFi at home. I hope this helps anyone in my position - paralyzed by options after a string of expensive fails. Stop the research and go out and buy an Orbi system. You'll never look back - like me!

Costs more than a regular router but offers better performance, more features, and is very easy to set up and manage. Basic WiFi set up is a piece of cake but there are a ton of high level networking feature that most people won’t ever use. We live in an older house with wire mesh/plaster walls and our previous router and extender were adequate. Signal was weak in parts of the house and ~100Mbps download speeds never matched the 300Mbps service we had. With the Orbi main hub placed central in the house and three desktop satellites place around the house, signal is unbelievably strong even into the yard. Download speeds are 250Mbps+. The desktop satellites have LAN connections which make it convenient for home office use to plug in laptops and VoIP phones. We’ve noticed movies stream with almost no delay now, too. Would definitely recommend.

Google the problems about using Apple device's I went passed the return date trying to get it to work, I wasted $500.00, If this unit worked like it should this would be a 4 star, Netgear knows about the issue but does not care if they find a fix, there so many user that use the Orbi with Apple device's, If you use non Apple then it may be a good choice, Be warned !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Several things I didn’t like about this. The remote units can be back hauled by Ethernet. Lights when in operation are non-existent. Hard to tell if they are connected.

I Replaced A Cisco Wireless Router That Seemed To Have Failed With This Router With The Satellite Units, And I Have A LARGE Home & Shop. Setup Was A Breeze, And There Are No Weak Or Dead Zones With This NETGEAR AC2200 Router. The Salesperson Knew Just What I Needed For My Large Area That Needed To Be Covered. I'm Pleased As Punch With This Router System. It Is A Bit Costly, But It Covers 8,000 Square Feet!!! This Covers Our Large Home, And My Two Story Shop Right Across The Driveway. Rock Solid Coverage All The Way. This Router Is A Bit Costly, But When The Others Won't Provide The Service You Need, This Is The Way To Go.

YOU WILL NOT GET A GOOD SIGNAL FROM A ORBI SYSTEM IN A LOG HOME. I CALLED THE COMPANY AND THE SYSTEM WASNT MEANT FOR A SIGNAL TO PENETRATE THROUGH A SOLID LOG WALL. THE GEEK SQUAD REPRESENTATIVE SAID THE ORBI SYSTEM WOULD WORK IN A LOG HOME BUT HE WAS INCORRECT.

SETUP (ARRIS SB8200 and ORBI RBR40 /RBR20 by 3) 1 Hour because I installed a new 32X8 3.1 modem as well for 1 Gig speeds and over 30 devices in my home. Easy and simple using the phone app. NOTE: You will have to setup everything twice due to firmware update straight out of the box. App is super user friendly. Expert setup and tweaks easy also. I am in the industry so easy for me, and can be easily explained by their tech support I assume. COST $400 on sale, well worth it because it solved my problems of not having speed and WIFI everywhere. SPEED - with 30 devices connected... 3500 sqft horseshoe shaped 1 level home. Main Router: 990 Wired and 790 Wireless (Rated at 886 Wireless so bad at all) Satellite: I have my sats over 60 feet away from the router no line of site in other rooms and I tested 200 feet away from sat inside my neighbors house across the street... Wireless 550 (not bad either) HARDWARE Router has 3 ports Satellite has 2 ports 10 cameras, 4 tabs, 6 phones, 4 computers, 3 laptops, pool, receiver, Directv, 10 smart switches / light bulbs and it all works without a hitch. No drops, no hiccups, just works. No Alexa or anything. so can't speak on that. Make sure your provider is giving you correct data / speeds. I had an issue where I upgraded to Cox Gigablast and I had to have the tech come out to remove a limiter that should not have been on my line in the first place. Not much more to say here. Good job on this one Netgear. I feel like my money was well spent!!!
