After you download the app, lack of to the point directions on how to add other devices. In the end we had to change our password to get this done after a chat with a technician from NetGear. My printer says connected but will not print.

The Netgear Orbi mesh system is a good system but unfortunately did not work for my ranch style home. Had too many signal drops and was unable to support our outdoor patio without adding additional hardware. I ended up returning and purchasing a different brand.

First impressions count, especially when you have just purchased one of the most expensive consumer routers on the market. Netgear prefers the term “Wi-Fi System” as their equipment actually includes a router and a secondary unit. Both the router and the secondary unit are aesthetically pleasing, looking more like white sculptures than anything else. The units have a creamy, rubberized texture that reinforces their chic feel. They don’t look or feel like technology. There’s a reason for that. Netgear wants you to leave them out in the open in order to maximize their performance. The router has three gigabit Ethernet ports and a USB 2.0 port for storage or a printer and the satellite has four gigabit ports. Netgear’s Orbi webpage says that their system works right out of the box and that it only takes a couple of clicks to perform the entire setup. Connecting the router to my modem was easy enough as Netgear has color-coded the internet port yellow. After connecting to the modem, the LED light ring at the top of the router lit up for a second. I knew it had connected to the modem when it pulsed once. Setting up the secondary unit was just as easy. I placed mine at the other end of the house and plugged it in. A few seconds later, its LED light ring pulsed white and then starting pulsing magenta. About a minute later, the light turned solid blue for a few seconds and shut off, telling me that a connection had been made to the router. Netgear’s color coding system is designed to let know the strength of their connection. A solid blue color indicates a strong connection; amber denotes a weak connection and magenta tell you that you do not have a satisfactory connection and that you need to move it closer to the router. It’s kind of like the old “hot and cold” game kids play. To complete the setup, I used my phone to connect to the default SSID of the router with the supplied password. Once connected, a configuration script automatically started running that allowed me to set my own SSID and password. Once I did that, my phone informed me that I was ready to surf the web. That is where things went sideways. The internet was not connected on the router. I verified that the internet was working by plugging directly into my modem, then tried a different Ethernet cable than the one supplied just in case it was defective. After trying to troubleshoot the issue myself with no resolution, I called Netgear’s tech support folks. The lady that answered was friendly and knowledgeable. We went through some basic troubleshooting steps and we finally figured out that it was the MAC address of the previous installed router that was causing the issue. Fortunately, the engineers at Netgear anticipated this issue and included an option in the advanced settings that allowed me to my computer’s MAC address instead of the router’s, eliminating the need to reset the modem. I did grumble a bit that it would have been nice to have that solution documented in the setup guide if it was potentially going to happen to everyone who upgraded from a different router. Once the internet was working, I ran a speed test to give myself a baseline. Consistent download speeds of 80 mbs were about what I expected as my computer was connected to one of the gigabit Ethernet ports in the router. However, it was the wireless connection where I noticed the Orbi really shines. The Orbi supports Wi-Fi up to 3gbs, and I consistently got download speeds of 75 mbs. I was able to stream two different HD movies over Netflix and surf the web at the same time with no stuttering or buffering on any of the devices connected. Netgear’s inclusion of a third radio dedicated to letting the Orbi units communicate seems to make a difference, letting the other two radios concentrate on the transmission of data to users. The web management interface is clean and minimalist, which follows the Orbi’s mantra that less is more. Users will appreciate the easy to read graphic panes that display the internet status, wireless information and connected devices while advanced users will still have the ability to dig into the minutiae of the router’s settings. One additional pane is dedicated to parental controls, where parents can blacklist and whitelist domains or individual websites. The Orbi system looks great sitting on a table in your living room and it will let you and your family enjoy web surfing, listening to music and streaming HD movies all at the same time without noticing the impressive science behind it all.

I was disappointed in this. Being that it has a 4 port switch in each one I was in shock when they won't work hardwired to each other. After doing some research online it said they where working in it but that was nearly a year ago. I ended up returning this and getting a velop system instead.

    Don’t Buy This Mesh Router

Bought this router for a large home. Installed satellite within 20 feet to start out and test the system. Satellite has dropped off three times in the last 4 days. Also router disconnected internet for my IPad Pro and IPhone X on the 2nd day. Had to setup system all over again. System has great coverage while it works, but doesn’t work right half the time. I will definitely be returning this mesh router for a single router unit. Too bad apple has discontinued its router line. RIP AirPort Extreme!
