    poor connection under 5G-N

I have Verizon FiOS internet (20Mbps) and use their Actiontec wireless router for a 2.4G 802.11g network, and I bridge an Apple Time Capsule to create another 5G 802.11n network. Online speed test shows that my iMac could achieve 19Mbps+ download speed consistently, under the 5G N network. Then I bought a Netgear WNDA3100 dual band wireless-N USB adapter card. My intention was to install it to my windows desktop PC to full utilize the 5G network. After installation I found signal drops constantly, the speed is highly unstable, averaging below 5Mbps (most of the times the test shows 0.x Mbps!) when connected to the 5G N network. The funny thing is when I connect it to the 2.4G 802.11g network, the speed is much faster (average 10Mbps+) and the performance is more consistent. Isn't 5G n supposed to be superior than 2.4G g? I've communicated with their tech support, tried uninstall, restart, and reinstall so many times and it didn't solve anything. So I simply returned it to Bestbuy and bought another wireless-N adapter from Linksys - Amazing: the Linksys took me less than 3 minutes to install and it works beautifully! I consistently get 19.9Mbps download speed whenever I run the speed test. Overall I feel the setup for this thing is over-complicated (not technically) - the software(Smart Wizard) may be well unnecessary. I use Linksys and it simply installs the driver and lets Windows do the connection job, and the whole process feels simple, smooth and fast (only 1 to 3 minutes). In the case of Netgear, I remember during my first installation it asked if I'd like "Smart Wizard (recommended)" or "Windows". I regret so much that I hadn't chosen Windows, because during the subsequent uninstall and reinstall, for whatever stupid reason this option menu never appeared again! - the ugly Smart Wizard just assumes everything. I strongly suggest Netgear make sure users are able to go ahead without bothering with the Smart Wizard and test the 5G-N connection for 3rd party routers other than Netgear N-routers. In my case it is Apple Time Capsule. The evidence is that iMac and Linksys adapters work perfectly while Netgear failed under the same conditions for unknown reasons. I don't have the time and expertise to check why, but it's their job.

Net gear should be ashamed to offer such a unreliable product. I, like you reading this overlooked the bad reviews knowing that not all people are happy with an item for some reason or another. Please believe ALL of them! It installed rather pain free. That is all the good news I can say about it. It continues to drop out and upon starting my computer, it has to scan all networks and then it takes approx. 2-3 min to connect....if it does at all. I just don't want any of you to purchase this and find out the hard way and waste your hard earned money. Please consider another brand!

The product works great once it is installed but it is not easy to get there. Netgear really needs to add a manual to its products. Getting someone on the line for tech support is a nightmare.

    Poor Performer

My old Netgear N300 Wireless PCI card adapter had gone bad. So, I tried this N600 USB adapter. The results were not good. It took AT LEAST 60 seconds after booting, every time, for the N600 USB adapter to finally synch with my Netgear router. This did not change over three days or so of fiddling with it. Once the adapter finally synched with my router, performance was so bad that I thought my router had gone bad. Internet pages frequently timed out. When I logged in to my router to look through the settings, my router pages wouldn't even load. As a side note, my PC is only ten feet from my router. The signal at the PC is very strong. When I used my laptop, using its native, internal wireless adapter to access the router and internet, everything was zippy. The router was fine. Was my PC the culprit? No. Prior to installing the N600 drivers and USB adapter on my PC, I had freshly re-Ghosted (reinstalled a Norton Ghost hard drive image) to a pristine image and did all the updates. I removed my old Netgear N300 Wireless PCI adapter and drivers. Then I put in the N600 drivers and USB adapter. Once I realized that the router was working as it should, I went back to Best Buy and got another Netgear N300 Wireless PCI card. I re-Ghosted again. I again uninstalled the N300 drivers that had come back with the Ghost image, installed fresh N300 drivers, and put the new PCI card in. Everything has been perfect since. My N300 Wireless PCI card logs into the router immediately on bootup. The internet is consistently snappy. The problem had been the Netgear N600 USB adapter. Unfortunately, I tossed out this little cap that comes with the USB adapter, so I can't take the thing back. I'm out 55 dollars and many hours of frustration.

    Conflicted with other USB Devices

I followed the directions and inserted the adapter in the USB drive when instructed. Everything appeared to function correctly and I was able to connect to the Internet. However, later I ejected and unplugged a USB thumb drive and lost all connectivity with this USB Wireless Adapter. I ended up rebooting and installing everything again. I had very similar problems when I used this USB adapter with other USB devices. Finally had to return the adapter and ended up buying a similar device from Linksys and I have not had any problems.
