Works well close, Nothing farther away than close
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After 5 years with a G router, we were told to upgrade to a N router. This one seems good for the price, but isn't. First off, we live in an old house (100+ years), but got fair strength with the G router. This router could barely get a signal outside of the room it was set up in. We had no signal in any corner of the house on the second floor, and no signal at all on the third. We were told to set it up upside down to have the signal bounce back, but that did nothing for the reception around the house. For gamers, it does provide excellent connection to 2 Xbox 360's for sure, but the NAT was closed on one system for some reason. It is also very good if you just need a 2.4 and 5.0 GHz signals as it produces both at once, however, that does not redeem its flaws as you need a signal to use either, which it cannot produce. Sure it may be great in a small home, but once you get larger, it bcomes a lot worse.

Good signal range, even in a 2-story house
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This router has good signal range, even between floors. The setup was a little difficult, but not impossible. I appreciate the parental control software included.

Poor customer support!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this router 7 months ago because I have up to 4 computers going in my home and was told this was one of NetGear's best premium routers and would have no problems. Had no problems for the first 6 months but magically as soon as my 6 month warranty lapsed the router slowed down to dial up speed whether I had 1 or 4 computers on line. Was told by the NetGear customer service that this happened regularly and I had to purchase 6 month($69.99) or 12 month($99.99) service contract so they could reconfigure my wireless software. Said their soft ware was continually "going out of date" and this service contract was necessary. Was told by one of my IT buddies that NetGear has these time activated software issues to force you to purchase their service contract. I can buy a new dual band router for less than their service contract. Don't buy this because NetGear has planned obsolence bult into their router's software. Buy Belkin or others with better CS. Won't stand behind their product. Disgruntled in Atlanta

Fantastic, with a side of issues.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As my family adds more and more wireless devices, I knew we needed to upgrade the router to handle it all. So, we upgrades from the netgear WNR1000. Everything would be great except we now have devices that used to connect no problem with the old router, to not being able to connect at all. However, I will admit that I have not yet found the time to contact netgear support to fix the problem. I know when I do, things should be fine as they are so good with technical assistance.

Still don't understand the software.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Don't count on this being a plug and play model. We have had to restart it on a couple occasions (less than 2 months old). Still can't figure out why you have to have a guest account running before the regular one is running. Still can't get the parental controls to work properly. We bought the dual band because Best Buy said we'd be able to put our Wii on one band and the rest on 5 Ghz band. At this time virtually no devices (even the latest iPods) do not use 5 Ghz.

Great Value for the Money

Nice router
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Seems to be a great little router if you aren't to far away, I think I just have too many walls for it to go through, but it does an okay job considering.

*NOT* Cleanly backward compatible
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm a network engineer by trade, and I've been working with these kinds of devices since the 802.11b days. I've also owned other Netgear equipment and have been reasonably happy with how well it worked. My whole purpose in buying this router is because it touts itself as being for "larger homes" and as having longer range. Considering I own a 2600 sq ft Ranch, I figured that I fit those categories quite well. This item, however, made me custom-configure a number of things so that all of my devices (802.11g) would actually connect. The admin interface is NOT intuitive to someone that's familiar with these kinds of products and you have to stop and read things carefully to understand what it is that you're actually configuring. It isn't clear what the "base" configuration should be in all areas if you're using all 802.11b, all g, a mix of the two, or are including n as well. Once I got everything configured so that all of my devices would connect (three laptops, a PlayStation 3, a Wii, two iPod Touch devices, and two Droid X Phones), there were significant performance issues. I would experience bursting / drops in throughput as well as complete loss of connectivity. My phones would not correctly auto-connect when I came into the house and I would have to go into the Wireless settings and force it to connect. It was installed for three days and is now happily back in the hands of Best Buy. I have reverted back to my Linksys WRT54G device and have reconfigured my home network so that I do not need a different router.
