    Router hell

I purchased this to replace an older netgear router that did not have the wireless capabilities. It installed easily enough, the wireless worked very well. The only problem encountered was with my personal computer. I was not able to get on the internet, and if I did it would time out after ten or fifteen minutes. I went to websites that I visit on a regular basis. Most of the time the router blocked me from going anywhere on the internet. When it did allow me to surf I would enjoy about fifteen minutes and then no page would load from any site. I reset the modem, configured the router every way imaginable to no avail. I am tech savvy with configuring computers and associated hardware. I have built my own computers for years and have a home network setup between several computers. I should think that I would be able to make a router work correctly. I went through the frustration for three days. I then put the old Netgear router back in service and everything was good again. I don't recommend anyone buying this router. It has some firmware flaw that even the company can't fix. Save yourself some frustration and wasted time and buy something other than this router.

Not dependable. It stopped working after 3 weeks from purchase.I had to call Netgear. It again stopped working in 6 weeks. This time for good. I contacted Netgear. They determined that the unit is defective. They will send me a replacement, but I have to pay a shipping charge of $16.90. I complained for the shipping charge, but at no avail. The phone service for technical support is awful. The call goes to India. The support people are courteous, but plan on spending HOURS on the phone.

Horrible product, their tech support is worse!

Bought this router in July 2012. Told it was the best. Not so. Had to call their support to set it up. Still will not connect to one computer, printer and our Wii. Their people sadi they could only help connect it to one device. I would have to pay for help with any others. WPS button never worked. Just dropped my printer off of it and can't get it back. Called their support again today and was told it would cost $129 to fix the problem. Their supervisor told me I had screwed up the settings, not their person who set it up originally. I never changed a thing! He siad a level 3 tech would set it up with a permanent IP address which was not done at setup which would fix my problem. I asked why it had not been set up that way in July by tech support. He said that the only way to have that done is to have the advanced support do it, which I would have had to pay the $129 for that service even when it was brand new!! He told me all kinds of crazy reasons for why it had malfunctioned again. Said I had probably clicked on a window on a website somewhere that had changed my settings. What?! I will NEVER buy a Netgear product again as long as I live. I spoke to Best Buy's customer support and they have been very helpful. They found my recipt and told me to bring this thing in to the store to have it tested since it sounds like it has a defect. I am betting they will find it is defective. They said they will return it if it is. Thank you Best Buy.

    Lousy, lousy, tech support

Not going to talk about the product, which is ok but no better than my previous Linksys. What I do want to talk about is my post-sale experience. I had it installed by Geek Squad because the self-install process thought I had a static IP address when I actually have dynamic. Two days later, my connection speed had declined by over 50% on the devices that could actually connect to the router, while some devices wouldn't connect at all. Called Netgear twice; both times they asked for a call back number in case we got disconnected. First call, got disconnected, no call back after 20 minutes. Second call, techie gave me instructions to follow, including re-setting modem. Since I have cable phone service, we knew this would disconnect the call, so Techie promised to call back in two minutes to continue the process. A) Weeks later, I'm still waiting for his call; B) his information was dead wrong. I ended up figuring out how to fix the problem myself. This is after the Best Buy salesman pushed me to the Netgear instead of another Linksys, telling me how great their tech support was.

    Too many dropped signals!

I bought this Router to replace a old Linksys Wireless G that I've had for about 8 years. There was nothing wrong with my old Linksys but I thought with it being so old that I would look to upgrade and hope for an improved speed/performance. I purchased this one based off of the reviews and it seemed like it'd be what I was looking for. It installed easily and I was able to connect to it with all my devices (Mac, Xbox360, PS3 (All Wired), Wii and 2 iPhones (All Wireless). I didn't notice an increase in speed on anything, actually a slight decrease on the MAC and decrease in Video quality while streaming Netflix on XBOX and Wii. After about 2 months the wireless signal started dropping to the point the Wii wouldnt connect at all and the iPhone would constantly switch between WifI and 3G. I changed a setting on the Router and it seemed to fix it until about a month and a half later and the same thing happened again! I had enough and switched back to my old Linksys, and again have had ZERO problems with. I will not purchase another Netgear product again!

This is by far the worst Piece of HW I have ever purchased. I should have learned a lesson from the first time I purchased a Netgear product a few years back. It took me two whole days just to get this thing configured and then only after I called Tech Support. I have AT&T U-Verse and my U-Verse router handles all my DHCP. It took several tries to get DHCP turned off and even then it kept trying to assign 10.0.0.1 IP address's to my devices. I have a very large wired and wireless network with a number of devices. After getting the issue resolved I had a whole new problem. Half of my devices wouldn't even connect to the Netgear device and the ones that would, half of them would not connect to the internet. I kept getting one error message after another. And don't get me started on the Tech Support. The guy I spoke to could hardly speak English and he spoke like he was on some kind of downers because he spoke very slow and did not really understand what my issue was. I had to explain it to him more then 3 times and each time I had to dumb down what I was trying to say. Now after a second time I have finally learned my lesson. I will never purchase a Netgear product that requires anything more then just plugging in a wire. If it has to be configured I don't want it. Also, the CD for setting it up proved to be worthless. I will definitely stick with my tried and true Cisco Linksys.

After 2 hours online, still not working

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I returned the first purchase because the wireless did not work - and it stopped my laptop from detecting other wireless networks. I took the second one home, carefully followed the installation instructions and the first night was really happy. The wireless worked. That was the last time it worked. Moreover, it has again turned off my laptop's ability to detect other wireless networks. The store gave me a phone number. It only offers service for pay. I went online during the hours they offer online service. After about 1.5 hours I was told to download something from their genie but, while navigating to that genie, I was cut off - and netgear's hours were over. I do have another number to call and was told to contact their chatline again if the issue was not resolved but finding a time when I am home and they are open is a hassle. Even if I get the machine working during my next call, the installation experience is not one I would wish on anyone. My last router (linksys) - purchased about 10 years ago - installed easily.

Requires a hard shut down/reboot after the computer goes into sleep mode. Walking around the house to do this defeats the purpose of wireless

    Do not buy!

I have had 2 Netgear in a row and have been very disappointed. After only a couple of months it began dropping connections over and over again. The only way to fix is by turning it off and on every 15 minutes. Call center is over seas they are rude and want to charge $100 to "reconfigure". I refuse to pay $100 to fix a $60 router or pay $100 to talk to someone overseas. I will never buy a netgear product again.

    When it works its OK

The first one of these I bought had to constantly be reset so i brought it back to Best Buy and got the same model thinking I got a defective one. Apparently its the model itself because the second one had the same problems. When it is working it is fine the problem is that is constantly has to be rebooted - i.e. at least once a day. It was working well for a few days but the problem is now back. Would not recommend this model.

    Poor performance

I was having trouble with some peripheral devices and my ISP thought my existing router was not assigning proper IP addresses, so they suggested getting a new one. This one looked reasonable, But it didn't help the situation, and worse, it downgraded the performance of my connection by 40%. I called support, but they wanted to charge the price of the router for service. They should have 30 to 60 day free support.

I installed the soft ware according to instructions. Some how the system would not work for me. I belive the incapability with a 8 year old computer and the new satlight system was the problem. I tried calling tech support. But they kept refering me to a company that wanted my credit card just to talk with me. Finally, returned it to best buy.

    False Advertising

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

It's rated at 300Mbps wifi speeds, but it will never actually reach those speeds. The ports on it are only rated at 100Mbps max, and they don't even reach that in my experience. Buy something else from a company that doesn't falsely represent their products. Other than that, it works fine. Hence the 2 star review.

    No What I Hoped For

Purchased the Netgear N600 to replace my aging Linksys router since the Linksys would not provide wireless to my bedroom in a single-story home slightly under 3,000 sq. feet. The Netgear N600 would not provide the proper coverage either. But, most annoying was the fact that the Netgear, even using their Genie, would drop signal 3 or 4 times a day: sometimes 1 or 2 times and hour. I am running a PC desktop, a PC laptop and an iPad mini. This issue became remarkably annoying very fast, as you can imagine. I did the CMD ipconfig /all and ipconfig release/renew commands to no avail. Thinking of going with a more costly Asus model and if that fails, I will go back to my trusty Linksys G which has served me faithfully for years, sans the coverage problem. As a side note, the return process at BB was quick and painless and the employee was very pleasant. TY!

    Weak Signal & drops offline

Bought this router to replace the Netgear $49 version. The $49 router, right out of the box, wouldn't stay on-line for more than a minute or two. Plus, it had a very low signal strength. No signal at all in my basement or on my deck. Returned to Best Buy and got this one as it is rated for larger house. It still drops off-line every day, but at least is mostly useable. However, signal is still way weak! The Actiontech Verizon supplied provided 2 out of 3 bars to my iPhone in my basement and on my deck and I never saw it off-line. It was 3 years old. This "high Performance" router from Netgear bounces between 1 and no bars in my basement. Not happy at all. Plan to plead my case to Best Buy and see if there is something better.

I've returned this product. I had high expectations of the range after reading reviews here, but it depends on your situation. If you live in a smaller apartment or townhouse, it may serve your purpose. I live in a moderate (2800 sq. ft) house and I'm left with one or two bars at the other end of the house. I'll be shopping around some more..if not, a second router may be needed.

Very limited range (you might as well hard wire!)

If you are looking for a router for a multi room or multi floor home, don't go with this one. I replaced a 7 year old linksys router that just now is begining to have issues, figuring I would upgrade to an N router with dual bands. Using this Netgear N600 WNDR3400 I now have dead zones throughout my home, the signal strength drops at about 10 feet without going around a corner, then forget it if you go around the corner. Don't by this product if you want a router with good range.

    1) I would not advise using this as a 'repeater' for VZ FiOS's Actiontec routers (first of all, the VZ FiOS is incapable of using it as a wireless repeater). 2) Even an ethernet connection is unreliable. 3) The range is horrible. 4) The 5GHz connection is unusable. I get many bands of 'connection' at 2.4GHz. I get very few, if any at the 5GHz band. Just say, no...
