Customers are saying
Customers regard the AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Standard Lens highly for its image quality, affordability, and performance in low-light conditions. Many found it easy to use, and appreciated its lightweight design. However, some users noted challenges with the manual focus mechanism, particularly its speed. Sharp, and for the $$ a no-brainer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Quick, quiet focusing with D7100 and D7200. Very, very sharp lens mounted to these crop sensor bodies. Light-weight and perfect for shooting sports court-side or within 50 feet of the subject. For the price it is a steal. My new go-to lens for close-in action shots over my 17-55 zoom. If you have a body without a focusing motor, look for the 'G' version if auto-focus is important to you, or you want to be able to grab the focus ring without switching to manual focus mode. Otherwise, save the $$ and get this 'D' version.

VERY NICE LENS!!!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a REALLY nice lens, you definantly need to have it in your collection. The price is cheap and it takes really great portraits. The only negative thing about it is that you have to manually focus the lens if you are shooting with the D40.

The BEST lens for the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Anyone who rates this lens poorly because it doesn't focus on their d3xxx, or D5xxx should have done two minutes of homework. Pretty stupid to blame the lens for not working on your cameras! This is by far the best lens you can buy for less than $150.00.

The older 50 f/1.8 option
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a sharp, lightweight lens, that takes 52 mm filters (the standard small Nikon since the 1950's#. It's also cheap, the cheapest lens that Nikon makes, so it's a great value. The aperture ring also ensures that it will work with manual focus cameras, such as the FM-10 that Nikon still sells today, so it's great for anybody in the market for that, as well. However, this won't autofocus on the D40, D60, D3x00 or D5x00 series of cameras as it lacks a focus motor. Also, this dates from the film days and not the high reflectivity digital image sensors, so if you stop it down to about f/2.8 you get horrendous veiling and aperture-shaped reflections from the sensor if you have light sources striking the front element on a digital body. Do yourself a favor: if you get this, also buy the HR-2 hood for it. The 50 mm f/1.8G #linked) is a newer, much better lens for anybody using digital or new film bodies exclusively, but for the price, it's hard to beat the 50 mm f1.8D, even with its 30+ year old optical formula I'm scoring it highly, but not recommending it unless you have a manual focus body like the FM-10, instead anybody in the market for a fast 50 on digital should look to the AF-S option, or either of the f/1.4 optics.

Great lens for the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this lens to use with my new d90, primarily as a portrait lens. I've been very pleased with the results thus far. Easy to use and produces great, clear shots.

Excellent lens, outstanding buy
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had a 50mm 1.4 and was not that happy with it. Have been without a 50mm for several years but decided the time and price was now and bought one at Best Buy. It is a keeper. Works well with my Nikon D2X, my D200 which are bothe DX cameras and also works well with wife's D700 full frame camera. Even though it is not AF-S, it focuses fast with all my cameras. Gives a very nice viewfinder image and the actual images from the camera and lens are outstanding even wide open. I waited too long to buy this lens but can not imagine not having one now.

Great low-light lens
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This lens is a great combination for any camera. If you are taking pictures indoor and want to use the ambient light then a prime lens is a must. The large aperture of 1.8 provides excellent background blurring. The 50mm focal length is perfect for smaller areas and is great for portraits providing a close working distance without distorting the nose or facial features. The only con is that the outer body is made of plastic. The build quality is still the same as other Nikon lens, but just not metal like some of the more expensive lens.

Good but a bit outdated now
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this lens for my older back up camera, D90. It gets a job done and image quality is very good, but it's older and it shows. It's noisy and slow to focus. I'm used to holding my camera with tho hands with my left hand being on the lens for added stability and here is my main complaint about this lens: The focusing ring on the lens rotates when AF is working, this has robbed against my fingers many times with decent force, and while it's not painful, it's uncomfortable and affects my concentration and flow. I have a newer G version on my main camera and for anyone looking to just have one 50mm prime, I highly recommend spending a little bit more and getting a 1.8G version, it's improved in every way and well worth the money.

Great lens-Sharpness is fantastic
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The lens is surprisingly small! Ignore all the reviews about it not focusing with lower value cameras, if they had read the specs they would know that. I have a D610 and it works great! Love the lens and the images it can capture. I cannot wait to use it for my next newborn shoot.

Best Bang for the Buck
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.not bad at all comparing to the 50mm F1.4 lens, definitely one of the lens you would want to make and investment in if you are testing waters and not wanting to shell out over $200 more for a slightly better lens. I bought this lens because I will eventually move on to a canon XSi but I needed a good lens for portraits. This lens has worked wonders, the only down side is I wish I can get autofocus on my D40 but I knew about it before making the purchase and do not regret it.

Must Have Lens!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This lens hasn't left my cam since I bought it! Despite having to use manual focus on my D60, I am in love with it. Great for low light and fast shutter speeds. If I had a do over I'd skip the kit lens and just purchase a body with this!

Great Lens, Poor Documentation
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was a great lens. Very sharp photos, even in low light thanks to the f1.8 aperture. Only problem was that, even though Best Buy's site says it is compatible with all Nikon SLR cameras, it would not auto-focus with my D40x. Looking through the manual for the lens, I found that this lens will not auto-focus with all models. So, unfortunately I had to return it. Check Nikon's website before buying to be sure it will work for you.

Fast, sharp, strong
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Been using this for a world of pictures. I haven't had a problem with not having enough light with the huge aperture (1.8) and it really does look sharp and take great pictures. Awesome deal for a great little lens. Super compact and lightweight.

Incredible value for the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The best buy for the money of any prime lens. Takes terrific, crisp photos and f-stop range allows for near total control over images. Only drawback would be the plastic build, but it's still sturdy enough to last. A must for any shooter's bag.

Great lens for DX or FX cameras

The Cheapest best lens you can buy.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Can't go wrong with this one. You can cut the light off in a room that's really dark and still get a great picture. It makes the noise in my D200 a minor thing in low light. The cheapest best portrait lens you can buy.
