Customers are saying

Customers are enthusiastic about the AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens's image quality and versatility, frequently praising its sharpness and ability to capture a wide range of shots. The lens's extensive focal length, covering wide-angle to telephoto, is also a significant plus, allowing for diverse photographic opportunities. However, some users find the lens somewhat heavy, and others have noted that the autofocus could be improved for speed and accuracy.

Not a true 300mm lens, just average optical characteristics which can be corrected in a good photo editor with lens correction capabilities. Shoot in NEF format so that you can pull out decent photos.

Well I thought spending close to a thousand dollars I would be getting an out of this world lens. I was depressed after awhile. Then I remembered I am elite plus and have 45 days to return. Just not sharp

    Nikon's worst lens.

This is the worst Nikon lens I have ever purchased. I have kit lenses that are far better. Absolutely nothing is sharp in any photo I have ever taken with this lens, and I've owned it over a year. I sent photos to Nikon comparing other lenses at the same focal length and settings, and they agreed that there was a problem, so I sent the lens to them at my expense, of course, and they returned it to me saying that the lens met their standards. The only thing good about this lens is that it is fairly light, which will make it easier to throw in the trash. Do not even consider this lens. I have a lens from Sigma that I purchased for only a couple hundred bucks that is way sharper than this piece of garbage, and I don't like that lens either, which should tell you how bad this lens is. Seriously, don't even think about it!

I have debated in agony about putting down 1K plus on this lens. I wish I would not have waited so long. It is a fantastic upgrade to my kit lens 18-105 VR. After taking 8000 pictures on my D7000 I realized I was using the wide portion of the kit lens only about 1% of the time. So this lens made more sense to me than the 18-200 DX version. Especially seeing a FX body in my future. This lens is super sharp. I can count the eyelashes on my subjects at any of the focal lengths and wide open apertures. It is very slightly soft at 28mm f/3.5 but sharpens a lot at 28mm f8. All focal lengths over 50mm are super sharp at any aperture.

This is very smooth operating lens. Additionally - considering that it zooms from 28 to 300 mm - this is very light. Clearly not as light as a single FL lens but...

This lens covers both extremes for a casual photographer. I primarily use it during my daughters soccer game and i am pretty impressed with its image quality. If you decide to buy this you wouldnt feel sorry.

This lens covers macro all the way out to zoom at 300 for a full frame camera. I don't need to never take it off my camera
