Customers are saying

Customers highly value the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Medium Telephoto Lens for its exceptional image quality and beautiful bokeh. The lens is also appreciated for its reasonable price, fast focus speed, and ideal focal length for portraits. Its relatively light weight is another positive aspect, while chromatic aberration is not a significant concern.

Good glass, but not great for DX cameras

When you are still and shooting stationary it is fine, but it struggles at focusing quickly.

At roughly $1,000 less. This is why 85 is a go to portrait lens. The purchase is a no brainer.

I owned this lens previously and just currently rebought it. This lens compared to my original is junk, major chromatic issues along with a err that comes up on my nikon d810 ONLY with this lens and bestbuy will not return nor exchange it. Have only had the lens for a month and have just started shooting again. Very dissatisfied with a $500 lens. Bust mostly bestbuy itself

I got this lens based on the incredible reviews on all sites. Bought this lens so that it will focus closely compared to my 70-200 vr ii. Out of every 10 shots I took handheld with this lens at least 3 to 4 were out of focus. Tried this on both a D750 and D500, but same results. Either I received a bad copy, or I am not understanding what others see in this. :) Definitely this is going back to Bestbuy.

    Excellent Lens For Headshot/Portrait Photography

I love this lens to death, and will miss it (as I'm switching over to a fast zoom, Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8). But while I had it, it has been phenomenal. Shots with it are always very sharp, and because of the nice wide maximum aperture, it's great for shooting in low light and getting that lustrous bokeh that everyone loves. As a prime lens, and especially on a crop body, this lens might be troublesome for casual photographers, as you've really got to have the right moment to use it. It's much too long for indoor photography (unless shooting pets), and not long enough to shoot really distant subjects. That being said, for anyone serious about photography as a profession or a hobby, a lens of this length is a must have, and there aren't too many better than this one.

I purchased this lens for my Nikon d7000 and they work perfectly together. I love the creamy bokeh effect I get when I take portraits. I have also taken some very beautiful sunset photos with this lens. A superb lens!

    Excellent Performer!

If you enjoy shooting primes like I do then you will definitely be happy with this 85mm 1.8G medium telephoto lens. It provides sharp optics and less chromatic aberration than the 35mm 1.8 and its distortion free (mainly because of its focal length). I've been using this along with my D7100 and having the capability of shooting wide open with this lens and the great hi ISO performance of the D7100 provides outstanding low light capability without having to worry about motion blur. It is fairly lightweight plastic construction, but by no means does it feel cheap. I think it is well made and feels solid in the hands. As a bonus it does include a lens pouch and a lens hood.

I was torn between buying this lens and the $1,500 f1.4. I am super glad I went with the more economical model. I have shot with both and I think this lens is just as good in most conditions. Razor sharp images with beautiful soft backgrounds. I am in love! New favorite lens.

    Great Lens

This lens is extremely sharp, very quick and quiet to autofocus, and is a really nice length both for DX and FX. It draws you into the subject with its shallow depth of field and works great in low light at 1.8. While most zooms cover this length, this prime lens has a lot to offer and the qualitative look of the images it produces just can't be matched with a zoom (not to mention that it's much faster than most zooms at 1.8).

Best for portraits! I have used it even for wildlife and architecture. With the 1.8g aperture, it made lowlight photography easier.

Purchase this lens for my husband as a birthday gift because it came highly recommended as a starter lens. I’m so glad I did because he hasn’t put it down since. He has taken some amazing portraits and I am happy with my purchase.

Sharpest 85 mm lens for the F mount

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This is sharp, the sharpest 85 mm lens made for the F mount by anyone, and fast, both in aperture and AF speed. On a DX body, this works wonders for indoor events and tight headshots, and on an FX it's a standard portraiture lens.

The lens works wonderfully, but I needed to return because it was not the right lens for the work I do. BB was fantastic in their customer service, making sure I understood the return policy and then not giving me the slightest problem with my return. I will certainly be buying from this company again!

This full frame lens coupled with our Nikon camera produces clear and precise images. The iso allows for beautiful low light photography which works well with much of what I do. I've had no problems with it and its heavy constructions gives me hope it will last a long time.

    Portrait Lens Work Horse

I love this lens. I think Sigma's Art series lens is better and the Nikon 85mm 1.4 is definitely better in areas of chromatic abberation and distortion, but for the price it is great. I primarily use this lens, but due to the large amount of chromatic abberation I find in the work that I do, I will probably be upgrading soon.
